Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)

Most Star Wars stuff is sold to kids who don't give a damn about anything except action figures. Once we, the last generation who saw the OOT on video, die, it'll die with us.

I have much more faith in youth.  Every generation has scorned the artistic sensibilities of its successor, and yet there remains a steady stream of people who appreciate great art.  Many members of this forum are practically young enough to be my grandchildren.

LOL

I'm sure Churchill was laughed at back in 1938 when he warned people about the Germans

I'm hard-pressed to imagine a more disproportionate use of hyperbole.

Jaws: Super 8mm Edition Project (* unfinished project *)
Time

I doubt I could do justice to it.  The Workprinters for 8mm are great for home movies and novelty stuff like the digests. But for serious transfer of really high quality super8, such as the Deranns, I'm skeptical.  For one thing, they don't take the large sized reels, so you'd have to cut the film and add leaders - not a dealbreaker but not appealing either.  But more importantly, the claw drive isn't as stable as the sprocket drive used on the 16mm workprinter. And, faking scope in 16mm is one thing, but faking it from a super8 print is bound to result in further loss of resolution in an already small format.

If I hired a service to transfer a Derann print, I'd want to know EXACTLY what technique they were using, and I'd want to see their setup.  A lot of places advertise HD super8, but it's usually just projected and filmed off the screen, or it's a workprinter like mine. If it's just a workprinter, I hardly see the point of the HD if it's gonig to be fake scope anyways.  Now if they have a more professional frame-by-frame scanner with sprocket drive, or better yet a cintel rank type system (which the best transfer houses DO have - but you're not likely to find it local unless you live in Hollywood or NYC), then it would be worth paying for.

I also have no way of capturing stereo from super8 like many of the Deranns have.  That too is something most transfer houses can't do.

Puggo Strikes Back! (Released)
Time

I doubt that I could make a super8 transfer that would match my 16mm transfer. Part of that is my skepticism that super8 has comparable resolution, and part is the fact that the super8 workprinters don't use a sprocket to drive the film. The little claw drive makes it compatible with reg.8, but also makes the image less stable. It also requires faking the scope since it doesn't have a scope lens.

I've already got a 16mm ROTJ print and it's next up in the queue after PSB.

That said, I'm sure a clean Derann print would look great in a home if projected through a very good projector with a scope lens.

But seriously, does anyone feel concerned that GL has the power now to tell the federal government (LOC) to suppress the originals and preserve only the SE? We didn't know that when the Blu-rays were out. What if he decides to tell the BFI they can't preserve the originals either? What If GL even lobbies congress to make a law forcing private collectors to fork up their own prints of the originals? It may be crazy, but that could be reality five years from now. LFL is a corporation, and hence has a lot of money to create laws that work for their advantage.

Yes, of course, but I don't feel the need to post it over and over. You're preaching to the choir - it's not news here.  And there are a lot of things to be happy about too, and truly new stuff going on here - there are some wonderful preservations that have been and are being developed here, have you watched any of them?  Better yet, have you helped out on any of them?  There are a lot of people providing thoughtful input into the Harmy thread, why not lend your eyes?

What would Yoda do?

What about getting Tom Baker to come back and play an older Doctor?
I don't know, it seemed like they were stretching it with Time Crash. Looking at pictures of 5, he's aged a lot.

I know, that's why I was imagining him doing an older version of the doctor, like Hartnell's age.

When did Empire become held in higher regard than Star Wars?
Time

What makes Empire great, in my opinion, are two things... (1) yoda, who is a fantastically-conceived character, and (2) the buildup to Han being frozen in carbonite.  The rest of the movie is, in my opinion, inferior to Star Wars.  It's also a more claustrophobic movie, with everything taking place in cramped settings, whereas SW seems expansive.  I consider SW the much better, much more great-by-general-standards movie.  But Empire is very cool, and hard core fans tend to think that its gloominess makes it more sophisticated.

I think what SHOULD have been done is exactly what (murder me for saying this) they're doing to Star Trek: The Next Generation. They're taking all the ORIGINAL film elements for the episodes and recomposing them from scratch. So we have the exact same episode, but with modern, HD composition. The result is a new, crisp, updated feel while still respecting the history.

I'd be very interested in that, if the original was also preserved.

Two random ROTJ observations about the Twin revelation.
Time

The script is very good for Luke's part, but her lines are awful.  I don't think anyone could have made her lines work.

I always thought that Han's reaction was on the order of... "huh? oh... OH, COOL!"

As far as the incest thing, to me the most uncomfortable part - in retrospect - was the end of ESB where it looks like with Han gone the other two are going to be a couple.  He puts his arm around her and she doesn't object.  Who KNOWS what happened between then and their return to Tatooine, eh!?

But that quote accentuates my point too-----that the audience pined for improved sound quality on their TV's----which obviously did not hold a candle to listening to a 6 track magnetic presentation in a 70mm auditorium(so it was always easier to be impressed when watching such a presentation).

Ok, I understand your point there.  Although it doesn't provide any insight into how good (or not) it sounded.  For that, I trust hairy-hen's independent assessment over LFL's sales pitches for the various SEs.
