PS78: Pre-ANH Star Wars Bootleg VHS from 1978 ***"RAW" DVD RELEASED***
Time

There are many possibilities, some exciting, some meh.  If it were an older generation copy of something we already have, then it wouldn't be of much interest.  If it were a screen capture that didn't exist before, or an earlier generation of an already-available bootleg, that would be big.  If it were a stereo grab of the 70mm mix, that would be a very important find.  If it contained the Biggs hangar scene, it would induce heart attacks.  It all depends on what the experts here find as they apply their respective fine-toothed combs to Antcu's initial capture.  I'm looking forward to reading about it!

If it this turns out to be something of interest, I have a Panasonic AG-1980 which is well-known as one of the very best decks ever made for extracting detail from old VHS tapes.  Not that I'm in need of yet another project...

I've got the exact same machine.....I love it too....though I have to say I'm probably still a novice when it comes to using it's full potential.

I think Silverwook(?) has one too.  What is interesting is that most really high-end VHS machines were designed to get the absolute most out of VHS recording and playback, and so naturally assumed the user would use the very best tape stock and condition.  Not many manufacturers thought about a future market for high-end VHS machines designed for lousy or worn tapes.  Now that the format is dead, those few that were designed for that are now the machines most coveted - meaning the Panasonic AG-1980, and also some of the JVC decks (such as the HR-S9911U).  I lucked into a mint AG-1980 last year and wow, I couldn't believe the difference.  Went back and re-captured all of my old VHS captures with noticeable improvement.

Please don't call it PSB, as there is a "Puggo Strikes Back" project that is almost done already called PSB (a 16mm capture of ESB).

How about ASW (Adult Star Wars) ?

My suggestion is to finish your initial capture, make it available to some of the knowledgeable folks on the forum (not me - I really don't know all that much about the various versions).  Then when it is determined what this is a capture of, decide if is worth making a real high-end capture of it.  If it is an in-theater capture, or 35mm capture, that would be of great interest.  A 16mm, not so much.  It all depends on the content, video and audio.  If Luke misses with the grappling hook, for example, there would be some interest :)

The Panasonic would blow your transfer system out of the water.  But for evaluation purposes, yours should work perfectly adequately.  Just be very careful with the tape and don't rush with the tape deck controls - would be a shame if the deck ate the tape.

(most of them possibly aren't even aware it's any different from 1997).

Agree about them liking it, but I think the public does know it a modified product.  When they see gawdy CGI Rontos jumping around, they know that effect couldn't have been done in 1977.

(he said 1997)

But to your point, a few years ago there was a local radio show in which the hosts discussed the SW marathon they had just done.  They watched all 6 episodes in succession, then discussed it the next day on the radio.  They all agreed that while the OT stories and acting were better, the effects in the prequels were better, and that the effects made in 1977 were primitive.  The example they gave to bolster their claim was the Jabba effects when he met Han in Ep.4. Sad, but true.

Indeed, rats are awesome pets.  I've had several and they have great personalities and are incredibly smart and friendly.

I'll take the feedback to heart... it's just an idea, and if done would be subtle enough that the average viewer wouldn't know there is a backstory.  I'd nix any pooping, based on the comments.  If I can't accomplish something appropriate, then a featurette is a great idea.

I have to keep reminding myself that even though I consider these restorations primarily for providing research material, some folks actually seem to enjoy watching them :)

REQUEST ------

I have an idea for the PSB menu, and to realize this idea, I need a video of someone's pet mouse (or pet rat) on a bluescreen (or greenscreen).  The mouse doesn't have to be doing anything in particular - just wandering around or sniffing would be fine.  Pooping would be cool, but not required (I can produce that using digital effects).

Most of you who have been following the project can probably easily imagine what I have in mind.  Any of you out there have a pet rat or mouse?  Might anyone volunteer to get a piece of blue or green posterboard, shine some reasonably flat lighting down on it, and use your camcorder to video him/her from about a 45 degree angle, walking around on the blue/green background?

All I can offer is eternal fame and glory for you (and particularly for the mouse) in a prominent spot in the credits.

Puggo GRANDE - 16mm restoration (Released)

Thanks!  I've been working 24/7 running a 6-week summer program, after which I finally get a real bona-fide 6 week break.  Thus a reasonable time frame for finishing PSB is the end of August (and I'm actually quite confident about that).

Unfortunately, it appears that my thumb drive with ROTP got lost in the mail to England (on its way to Adywan for color correction). Meaning that I'll have to buy another one and start that process again.  Minor annoyance.
