Who'd like to try a chess variant? Now playing Xiang Qi, a.k.a. Chinese chess
Time

I've taught this course for 12 years (different game each year), and never has my program won.  And not for lack of trying... I've come in 2nd several times.  Invariably I have some genius student, or someone with a lot more time on their hands than me.  Last year I came in an embarrassing 5th place.  You can see all the details of previous year's tournaments (and the various games I invented for them) here:

In most cases, you can even download the winning program.

I really enjoyed the new snowboard racing events.  I still don't care for the half-pipe, and I really found it difficult to watch the new half-pipe with skis event -- that just looked like it was designed to blow out people's knees.  But those racing events with 5 or 6 boarders racing over those jumps, now that was the first Olympic boarding event that I went out of my way to watch whenever it was on.

What if Weir decided wanted to do the Ice Skating commentary in a suit of armor or using newspapers as clothing or in the nude?   That wouldn't be weird?

But he didn't anything remotely similar to those things.  He wore clothing that is a bit outside of the norm.  Between your rant against the hockey teams - saying they should hang their heads in shame (a bronze, oh how horrible), and your insistance that Weir a "weirdo", I'm beginning to conclude that you are simply an extremely judgemental person.

I'm not a Christian, but the more I age, the more I find that following the "judge not [etc]" rule, just leads to a happier life.

The world would be a richer place if people allowed themselves (and others) more room to be themselves.

perhaps, but I don't think that means we should deny that there is such a thing as being weird.   Or are you saying if I decided to wear a pillow case or a lamp shade as clothing, that wouldn't be regarded as weird.

Whether or not it's weird, you'd have to admit that the world would be a richer place if you did :)

I am surprised he hasn't recieved some criticism from the gay community for feeding into the stereotype that gay men are effeminate weirdos.

He has received a ton of criticism from the LGBT community - not for that, but for going to Russia at all and not being more outspokenly critical of Putin's policies.  He definitely marches to the beat of his own drum (plus, he has a Russian husband).  I don't think he's a weirdo at all.  He's just different.  The world would be a richer place if people allowed themselves (and others) more room to be themselves.  Oh - I also appreciate that he doesn't talk through the whole performance, but does most of the talking before and after.

I also like the guy doing the color commentary for bobsled.  He sounds like Hulk Hogan announcing a wrestling match!  But he knows his stuff and he knows a lot about the competitors.

That was my first impression too.  But after watching for a while I got past that and became very impressed with his quick wit and seemingly off-the-wall comments that invariably nailed his point home in an effective and entertaining manner.  They frequently make me laugh.  His outfits are coordinated with Tara Lipinski and manage to remain classy despite being untraditional... I think they make a fantastic team.  I mainly appreciate that what he says has content, whereas most of the time after Hamilton is done talking you just realized he has said basically nothing.

The Scientology Thread (was: Ask the Ex-Scientologist Anything)
Time

I am struck by the complexity and cryptic-ness of the structure.  Half of what the OP is posting I can't even follow.  It almost seems like members get so entwined in this tentacled labrynth that they don't notice obviously horrible things like banning family members from seeing each other.  I think the scientific name for that is "groupthink", and the Hitler analogy seems to have been applied to the wrong side, at least in that respect.

Back in the 80s when I was playing a lot of music, many of my musician friends were in Scientology because it got them off of drugs.  So I thought it was fine and benign, until I saw one of them (who I briefly dated) trying to use it to treat someone with alzheimers.  I thought that was seriously presumptuous for someone without a medical background, and have been suspicious of it ever since.

Given my observations, above, is there any sort of self-reflection built into the system?  Or does it (the system) pretty much presume itself to be infalible?
