Sorting Laserdiscs
Time

Although it is a commendable and rewarding project to do the laserdisk captures yourself, you'd probably have a better quality viewing experience by getting the DarkJedi capture, or the Harmy despecialized blu ray.  Those and many other restorations on this forum are quite sophisticated and involved years of work by multiple people.

Of course, if you'd like to contribute to some of the ongoing efforts as well, or have some new idea to offer in that regard, that would be great too!  Just suggesting that if you're chasing down laserdisks, laserdisk players, etc., just to experience the original unaltered trilogy, there are easier avenues with less work, less cost, and likely much better end quality.

The random things that you saw today, that made your life that little bit better thread
Time

This probably doesn't count - but it's a little thing that has made my life better today...

I play a LOT of table tennis, and have been hampered lately with shoulder pain that has been gradually getting worse.  Not bad enough to make me stop, but enough that I've worried I may have to at some point.  Anywho (learned that in an earlier post), tonight I was at the club in a heated match, and I step around my backhand side to hit a crosscourt forehand.  My opponent then hits a drop shot on my wide forehand side, and I have to lunge over to get it.  I do get there in time, early enough in fact to attempt a down the line kill.  Well, I'm so off balance from the extended reach that I hit a terrible stroke, miss the table entirely, and I feel a crunching "pop" in my shoulder, accompanied by a sharp pain.

Oh oh, I think - there is goes.  But lo and behold, suddenly my shoulder feels fine.  The pain that's been dogging me for several months is entirely gone!  Seems I may have somehow freed some sort of impingement.

I'll know for sure in the morning.  For now, I'm knocking on everything wood that I see, in the hopes that this miracle isn't temporary.  If it still feels good in the morning, I probably should pay my opponent as a thank you for the chiropractic adjustment.

Still the tests they take have an in built bias put there by the people who made them up. Not to mention the teachers have their own bias so the students know the easiest way to pass is to think like the teachers.

Wow, you just insulted a whole lot of people who worked very, very hard.

Nobody said you should "lose your rights" and all the other nonsense you are attributing to us.  Only that dismissal of science is a step backwards.

It's obvious that you have some issues you're working through, so I won't continue our discussion further.  Best of luck.

DrCrow, I don't know where you are getting this idea that scientists have all this power.  For all the screaming by the vast majority of scientists, virtually nothing is being done about global warming.  It is politicians, big money, and superpacs that have the power and make policy decisions, not scientists.

Your logic seems to be that sometimes scientists are wrong, therefore you shouldn't believe them unless you see it yourself.  Well, that's pretty hard-lined, since a huge amount of incredibly beneficial science involves things you and I can't see.  Global climate change is not something you and I are likely to see directly until it's too late.  But that said there are quite a lot of visible effects, an interesting summary/overview is on NASA's website:  http://climate.nasa.gov/effects

If you're waiting for the flood waters to come rolling into your living room in order to believe it, that is your right - but I would suggest that as a society we can do better than that.

And nobody is stopping Fox News from whipping everyone up into a frenzy about it.  So I don't know where all this thought police Orwellian stuff is coming from.  My point was regarding the wholesale disrespect these days for science, and you demonstrated my point far better than I did.

Well I just don't believe that we should never question scientist or hold them to account when they are wrong.

And this claim that they are wrong is based on...?  Global warming isn't a concept that someone just pulled out of their arse.  It's been backed by an overwhelming number of scientific studies, inquiries, and peer review over many years.  Unfortunately, the claims out there that it is "wrong" are, by contrast, generally based on anecdotes and flippant remarks.

I'll fast-forward past the rest of your anti-science rant, to...

As for global warming unless we can get China and Mexico to cut down on their carbon footprint there is not a whole lot we can do.

And their justification for not cutting down, is generally that we are hypocritically asking them to cut down even though we aren't.

You do know that some of these global warming people predicted that ...

While I don't anywhere near share frievous's level of despair,  I am frustrated by our country's increasing dismissal of science.  Yes, of course scientists always keep an open mind and never claim proof beyond a doubt.  That is a hallmark of science (and what keeps it moving forward).  But the flippancy by which people are willing to reject - not retain an appropriate level of doubt, but flat out reject - current scientific state-of-the-art, simply because some talking head gets political brownie points in so doing, is a big step backwards for western society.  I honestly don't think this level of discourse would have happened 40 years ago, when popular respect for science got us to the moon and back.

I'm beginning to think the only reason we don't also hear phrases like "these general relativity people", or "these evolution people", or "these black hole people", is that those topics don't currently threaten a certain political constituent.  But since our cars don't get us close enough to lightspeed to experience timeshifts personally, and a black hole isn't currently charging through our living room, it's probably only a matter of time before people poo-poo those too.  After all, science is just another religion, or so we're told.

I remind you that just because we think our God is doing a bad thing, he might not necessarily been doing something bad.

Even though all these things are done with the best of intentions, there is no way to explain it to the dog.   Maybe the same is possible with God and humans?

Absolutely!  In fact, that is the only scientifically consistent argument I have ever heard in favor of a Biblical explanation for the universe.  Our point of view is the same as the dog's, and so we can't possibly understand why certain things must be the way they are and why we must do certain things that seem illogical.

However, while I find it consistent, I don't find it persuasive.  The same reasoning could be used for every religion that has ever existed.

I've always been curious why monotheist religions assume that God means well?

It's only fair that I follow-up....

My dog thinks I'm a God.  I am obviously way smarter, I tell it what it should do, I provide for it, feed it.  I can perform "miracles", such as unlocking a gate, or making that big machine with wheels go.  To some animals, such as chickens, the analogy might even be stronger, because we breed them and thus in some sense "create" them (at least from their point of view).  They have no way of seeing much beyond their immediate observations and we are as close to a God as they can imagine.

However, we don't always mean well for them.  In the case of the dog, yes of course most of us mean well.  But maybe not - for instance, some people raise dogs for dog fighting.  And most chickens are raised for eating.  When other humans rescue dogs from a life of dog fighting, we often see appalling conditions in which the animals are raised.

Suppose that the being that Christians call "God" (presuming He exists) isn't really a god at all, but is actually just a superior being who is raising us for some nefarious reason.  Naturally he would give us orders and tell us what we need to do.  He could perform miracles as evidence of His stature.  How would we know whether He is actually the God he says he is?  Some pretty awful stuff has been going on here -- maybe someday some other similar being will come along and arrest our "God" for whatever bad thing he has been doing with us?  Maybe the universe is our "pen" and we just aren't smart enough to unlock the gate and escape?

And I still don't know what "True Law" is.

The physical constants that keep us from flying away or bursting into photons, Natural Rights, positive principles... everything embedded in the universe since the beginning that leads to the most pleasant human existance.

Totalitarians, anarchists, "progressives", libertines... these are excellent reverse-weathervanes with the arrows in the tails. Find out what they want and then turn 180 degrees to find True Law. They might find some depraved titallation along their path, but, ultimately, it's catastrophe for the rest.

I've read studies by sociologists and cultural anthropologists. They were looking for the different essential rules by which various cultures all over the world hope to govern themselves. They found The Ten Commandments (plus or minus sabbath keeping and honoring only one God.)

There is a single universal code of Law applicable to all humans.

 Well, that clears things up.

[fill in the blank] Just Died!

Herb Jeffries, the "Bronze Buckaroo".  Also famous for singing with Duke Ellington for many years.  He turned 100 last year.

I had the good fortune of backing Jeffries up for a weekend at a jazz festival back in 1989.  He was not only an astounding singer and consummate professional, he also was extremely kind and patient with us.  He announced me as "one swinging drummer", a compliment I'll never forget from such a legendary singer.

Here is a clip I posted several years ago from that weekend:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nP_8CV5HtQ

What a voice!  Hard to believe that at 75, he still had 25 more years of a career ahead of him.  His biggest hit was "Flamingo"... he joked that he sung that tune so many times he could sing it on one leg.

Would it have been possible to make the PT (in the late 90's / early 00's) in a way that synced up with the OOT?
Time

I am hard-pressed to see how to build prequels that wouldn't destroy the reveals in the OT.  It would take some extremely clever story-writing to show Anakin as the kind friend of Obi-wan, see him seemingly murdered, then seen this alleged murderer Vader rise through the ranks.  I suppose it could be done, but it would be really difficult.

Blu-Ray Of Unaltered Original Trilogy Rumour
Time

I DON'T consider Adywan's revised editions to be "better" than the originals, and I doubt that Adywan would either.

As for watching and enjoying, that's a personal thing.  There are terrible films that I personally enjoy, some of them I even enjoy more than certain great films.

But when using words like "better", important films also have to be judged by their role as watermarks for the time, place, and culture in which they were made, as it true for all works of art.  It is simply impossible to modify - in any way - a work of art 20 or 30 years after the fact and do anything but diminish its artistic value.

Furthermore, it is virtually impossible to make such changes without those changes being obvious and clumsy... our brains are incredibly clever, and generally notice even the slightest anomolies in such respects.  Why? - because the changes were made in a different time, place, and cultural context, and 99% of the time, it shows.

I have and enjoy Adywan's work immensly - heck, I asked him to color-time my Puggo Strikes Back (which he also did a fantastic job on).  But there is no way ANH:R could replace SW, on many, many levels.  Much like the SE, it is a fan edit - one could argue that it's a better fan edit than the SE, but purely a fun fan edit nonetheless.

Ignostic means you aren't even sure if the question is right.

OH!  I like that a lot.  I think I am definitely an Ignostic.  I think the whole search for the creator, the meaning of life, etc. are all the wrong questions.  Furthermore, I think that we as a species are incapable of comprehending the meaning of the universe, and aren't even asking the right questions.  We are insufficiently evolved, yet our religions insist they know the answers.  Heck, we don't even understand what our own consciousness is, how can we expect to even partially comprehend the creation of the universe?  What does that even mean?  We haven't a clue.  Yep, I'm definitely an Ignostic.
