Info Wanted: Question regarding prequel trilogy edits in general...
Time

Why does everybody change the film names?  I mean what is offensive about the original names? I’d say that they all fit the film’s story quite nicely.  Phantom Menace goes on with wondering who the sith lord is.  Attack of the Clones is about… the clones.  Revenge of the sith is about… the sith rising again.  I mean what’s wrong with them?  They fit alongside A New Hope as well.  Because Luke is the new hope to defeat the sith that just had revenge.  The Empire Strikes back is basically the empire attempting to crush the rebellion and locate skywalker and crew after they destroyed the death star.  Return of the Jedi calls back (forward?) to revenge of the sith, in EpIII the sith rose, in EP VI The Jedi brings balance to the force.  They all fit together, I don’t see what’s wrong with them.  The films themselves is another matter! I enjoy the edits in general just wish they would leave the name and opening crawls alone.

If anybody was interested, I dunno if this edit was really followed much or anything.  But if you guys were interested I've decided to take this up again.  I know it's been a while.  But I feel I could make a good edit of this film.  All the existing edits of this film out are... good.  I mean I like them all, they all have good ideas.  But there's just certain "things" about them all that bother me.  Spence's final cut is very good, but certain audio cuts bothered me.  Danedits is also good, but I dislike the new subtitles in jabba's palace and the replaced music at the end.  I intend for this edit to be very conservative, yet cutting all the "slack".  Think "Phantom edit" rotj.  Same film, no radical changes.  Just taking what is given and making it flow like ESB.  For those who LIKE Jedi, just not as much as the first two.

Also thanks Aluminum Falcon, I will be using that, and if I ever get this finished you shall receive an XVID of the first draft.

Does any one know what the quality is like on the EditDroid isolated score?, is it usable for transitions and smoothing edits out? And if so, would anyone that has the editdroid ROTJ be willing to rip it for me? I don't really have anything worthwhile to offer in return, maybe an xvid of the edit before it's officially released as a DVD5.

With all the activity going on in Spences thread, and rightly so his edit looks like it's going to be fantastic, I guess this edit will be for those more conservative, who like ROTJ but dislike some things about it.

And just a small update for when I get back to doing this: Some small segments will contain footage from Dark_Jedi's Gout, with some color correction done to match with the '04 footage.  (I actually don't have a problem with the coloring of rotj in the o4 discs).  Examples I can think of at the moment would be using footage from the gout to remove the bantha herds at jabba's palace.  And some shots with lightsabers, although I will try to fix that by adjusting brightness and contrast levels first.  And of course removing Hayden.

And the majority of the films audio will also now be using hairy_hen's 5.1 rotj mix, for it's superior quality to the '04 mix.

Since I'm gathering new sources I might as well get another, does anybody know of a place where I could get an isolated score for rotj without having to download the entire Editdroid DVD?

Yes I could do that.  I don't know how to make custom credits, but do you think I should put Phantom Editor or his real name?  I was thinking I could put his name along side the original editors in the credits so as not to alude to the film being a fan edit.

And yeah I might just cut out that scene after padme walks away as you suggest.  And I don't think having the other rotoscoped things he did will be needed.  I mean I never even noticed them.

No, I'm not recreating them.  I could just do without them.  I mean, none of the other fan edits of AOTC I've seen have these changes and it never bothered me.  And I didn't even notice his when I watched it.

And does anybody know how to contact him?  I mean even if I don't use his shots I'm still using the ac3 ripped from the video stream, as it's quality is fine.  So I should try to get permission.

Yes they look fine.  And I mean... seriously?  You're worried about subtitles looking slightly jaggy?  I mean does it really matter? I can just see it now.

Person 1 and 2 watching the set.

Person 1:Oh this looks nice, much better than the gout!

Person 2:Yes, but wtf those letters at the bottom of the screen are slightly jaggy! This is highly important and is ruining the movie for me!

Person 1: Oh your right.  Damn, those stinking subtitles.  If you look very closely, you can just barely see some jagginess in them! Those subtitles I barely notice ruined the movie for me.

Hmm... well I might keep a couple roto shots like the one with obi-wan at the beginning.  But the ones on Geonosis I might just keep the original shots.  I mean I never even noticed them, is it really worth the loss of quality to use his shots instead of higher quality shots that are slightly different?

Also I thought I remembered reading something about him adding an extra shot to Anakin and Padme's scene on naboo.  (where he used to talk about sand and whatnot)

I might would consider trying to make a "restored" version of AOTP while I'm on a break from ROTJ.  It would probably not get done all too quickly however.  Also if I did it the best I could give you would be a DVD9 with exactly the same picture quality of the official dvd.  Or I'm considering possibly slightly desaturating it and re-encoding it, but I dunno if it's worth the extra encode.  Although I will admit, it does make it slightly easier on the eyes.

It'll end up being more conservative though.  Honestly I've been uncomfortable changing the plot the whole time.  I don't want to seriously change the structure of the film, I just went to present the film without the embarassing moments and tightening up what's left to be more in line with the first two movies.

I am ready to knock this one out though.  I might take a stab at Phantom Menace after this.  I know it's been done to death but I feel like I could make a good edit of it.

Excellent.  I'm looking forward to seeing it.

I'm also glad to see you using the Luke on Degobah to the beginning, because when I get back to editing mine I don't think I'll want to do that.  Truth be told I've been a little uncomfortable with doing it the whole time, but I would love to see a different edit that uses it.

I'm sorry to hear this, Possessed.  I hope you manage to find some new software that does what you want and have another go at this when you feel ready. :-)

Maybe I should change the status to put back.  I mean, I think the reason I was so burned out on it was because I had already edited through the whole film twice.  I'm actually happy with the software.

I'm sure it'll come back eventually.  Probably a little in april, and then again over the summer...

I'm sorry to hear this - it was shaping up to be a great edit.

Not really.  I mean the opening scenes that I had shown you was basically all that was done on it anyway.

I mean the first draft I did I think was pretty good idea wise but due to Womble's terrible audio engine numerous pops and split second audio drop outs at cut points ruined it to me.  (And let me tell you that pissed me off because I had actually planned on being done with the edit at that point.  I mean all the actual edits themselves were smooth and seamless but womble kept adding pops and shit at cut points that I didn't know how to get around at the time)

I think the best edit of episode II is attack of the phantom.  Now what would really be amazing is if somebody were to Take a 720P source of AOTP and edit it to sync with the audio track from attack of the phantom.  I'm sure it could be done, with the proper opening crawl.  The question is, would we need permission to do this?

And I think Spence's EpIII edit is best.  Stanpaks is pretty good but there are a few harsh cuts and sometimes the pace is a little Too fast.

Idea: Attack of the Clones: The IMAX Cut?
Time

I agree, AOTP is the best fan edit.  All other edits either cut too much or too little.  Somehow, this edit manages to keep some of the cringeworthy lines... but it makes them work!

Now, what I think would be an interesting project is taking the ac3 5.1 track from AOTP and somebody editing AOTC video to match it, thus having AOTP in high quality.  (with the exception of the couple of shots he rotoscoped, I'm sure with some filtering a couple brief shots could blend in with the rest)
