Because my music tastes are so broad, I have developed an odd style that doesn't belong to a single genre, and I think it would be a crime to waste that in a cover band.

The same could be said about me.  I primarily play metal, but with the attitude and fury of Stevie Ray Vaughan (he may have been blues, but he plays with more fury than metal.  Metal's fury comes from primarily the thick instrumentation and the momentum of the songwriting, but I would say alot of metal bands actually play their instruments pretty tamely.  Fast, but soft.  I play metal riffs like SRV played blues riffs... played hard and floored. )  Also I solo quite alot like Stevie Ray Vaughan mixed with some more melodic classical shredding and occasionally the random-ish outbursts of furious notes of Slayer's Kerry King, all infused in to one.  Suffice it to say I'm all over the place.  I can actually carry a song too, which is a trait most local guitarists here seem to lack.  Most of them only learn "tricks" or gimmicks, but when they play riffs or songs they just sound horrible.

Uuuh high and mighty, are we? And I was led to believe I was being the only one around here.

You're damn right I'm high and mighty about my guitar playing, I've worked hard on it and I'm good at it.

Having listened to you play, I must agree: you are extremely talented...!

Thank you!  Although truthfully I did kind of go overboard on that post... I wasn't really trying to come off that way but I was a little sauced and I kind of lost track of how much I'd said already and before long a few sentences became a long run-on paragraph without my full consent.  :P

Plus there's the fact that Stevie could sing and play guitar at the same time better than hendrix could sing without playing or play without singing...

Hendrix is a good player, and he's definitely innovative, but also he was sloppy and stevie never was.

I love stevie's voice as well, it just sends the already fantastic music over the top.

Too bad we're not from the same area, there's a severe lack of competent guitar players around where I live.  I don't even bother with anybody that's my age in music anymore, I've never personally met a guitar player that was as young as I am that could keep up, occasionally I'll find an older guy I can jam with for a while.  Not being arrogant, that's just the way it is.  You should see the look of shock people get when I can play scuttle buttin.  There's just no talent around here.  Not for guitar playing anyway.

Stevie Ray Vaughan. My dad used to talk about his music, and one day he put some headphones over my ears and played the track scuttle buttin'.

Funny you should mention that... I'm actually about to perform that song in the talent show for my workplace in a couple of days.  It's one of those songs that's really hard to learn, but once you do get it down it's really easy to play.  There's a sort of hack/trick that comes to playing the main lick to it, and it's hard to comprehend when you don't know how to do it, but once you figure it out it's quite easy.  I'm sure you know what I mean.

I listen to mostly melodic death metal.  Some other types of metal too, including regular death, thrash, and black, but mostly melo-death.

My favorite bands lately are Kalmah, which have an amazing ability to be very heavy, brutal, and "metallic" while at the same time having thoughtful melodies and symphonic elements.  Also Insomnium, who I wouldn't necessarily describe as heavy or brutal, but have a very melancholic atmosphere with thoughtful, sad melodies.

An atmospheric black metal band I've been loving is Coldworld.  Such sadness and beauty in the music, it really conjures an image of cold and snow with alot of sadness and ethereal beauty.

Some non-metal acts that I've been listening to are the pop rock band Collective Soul, who is to me the definitive pop rock band because they are not mindless radio music, they are just rock music but with a softer touch and alot of classical influence and they get played on the radio because they write brilliant songs that are also catchy.  (Remember December?)

Also I am obsessed with Stevie Ray Vaughan.

I've recently discovered the joys of smoking tobacco with a pipe... it smells good and doesn't leave you smelling bad

Tell that to the teenage me who had to sit to the immediate right of my pipe-smoking Physics teacher every tuesday :-(

Perhaps it was just the particular blend this professor enjoyed... there are many blends that offer a pleasant aroma.  I'm quite partial to cherry flavored tobacco myself, and I often am told I smell like cherries, but I've never been told I smell like smoke.

Also, perhaps.  That's another good smoking word.

I think he just desperately wants everybody to think he is smart, and he is under the false impression that the way to achieve this is by talking down to everyone.  But really he just looks like an asshole, and I don't think anybody here 'admires his intelligence'.

And as far as I'm concerned, Darth_Ender's point is INCREDIBLY easy to grasp.  He thinks X is wrong.  He wishes you wouldn't do X, but he admits that as a free human being you have the right to do all the X you want and he won't stop you, as much as he wishes you would stop yourself.  Therefore he pities you as you are up dancing all night and drowning yourself with too much water.

I've recently discovered the joys of smoking tobacco with a pipe.  I've never liked cigarettes, they are nasty and horrible for you.  Pipe tobacco, which is of course still bad for you in some ways, is far less harmful and actually has benefits to your mind.  Also it's far far less addictive than cigarettes, ( due to the chemicals they add to cigarettes specifically for that purpose).  Also it tastes natural instead of all chemically and it's actually a good taste.  And there's also the big bonus that it smells good and doesn't leave you smelling bad.  Plus there's the added social benefit of being able to say "Indeed."

You actually play on a NES?  Amazing.  Mine quit working ages ago.

I don't know if you still have yours but if you got the classic blinking power light error the 72-pin connectors in the console sell for about 10 bucks a piece online and they're surprisingly easy to replace.

This is true but the rest of my post explains why it's irrelevant in my case.  Emulators just look much better on my TV due to the upscaling/filtering they do.  Plus playing them on a ps3 controller feels pretty close to a SNES controller.

You actually play on a NES?  Amazing.  Mine quit working ages ago.  I then purchased a "retro duo" which played the cartridges reliably, as well as SNES cartridges.  But then I made the jump to HDTV and switched over to emulators with a pc hooked to the TV since the use of video filters (especially with SNES and N64 games) made these games look great on an HDTV whereas running a real NES console would either make it blurry or pixelated.  SuperSAI2x for super nintendo games makes them look fantastic, *almost* like they are a modern game that was drawn to look retro.

Yeah... I wish there was some way to extract the game engine from the NES version and paste it into the code for the SNES version.

Because I have an OCD where if somethings a series I want to watch/play the same edition of all of them.  For example when I was a kid I had the "Faces" vhs of Star Wars but the 92 printings of ESB and ROTJ (the ones that used movie posters) so I had to buy the 92 printing of SW to make it match.

This raises horrible problems for me with the mario bros series, as the NES version of SMB1 has better play control, but SMB3 for SNES is just awesome in every way.   WHAT DO I DO!?!?  It causes me way more grief than it should.  Should I play SMB1 for NES and SMB2 and 3 for SNES?  That's just ludicrous.

There is a ROM hack of Super Mario World that hacks all the levels to super mario bros. 1.  It's better than All Stars, but I've always liked the charm of the SMB1 physics and how you can't change direction mid-jump.

The same author made a hack of super mario world that does nothing but replace the graphics in super mario world with graphics from super mario bros 3 (SNES) that is awesome though.
