Whenever someone does that to me I just stop talking to them, and ignore them until they stop. I used to try and appease them but I gave up on that and just figured I’d wait for them to get over whatever problem they have. It’s passive, but still effective usually.
The thing is, this person KNEW exactly what they were doing when they turned asshole on me. I don’t think I have anymore passes with that kind of shit.
There is only a few things that will REALLY make me angry, unfortunately that person knew exactly how to push those buttons for no particular reason.

I agree, using the video from the AVCHD and putting it in a different container will give far better results than re-encoding.
Also, I saw reference earlier to transcode settings that would downmix the 5.1 audio into stereo with Prologic II matrixing, which made my head hurt. The surrounds in the 5.1 are already phase-shifted as it is, which makes for less-than-ideal sound quality when downmixed again, owing to the way it was made. I tried to minimize this as much as possible, but putting additional phase-shifting on top of what is already there will most likely sound even more weird. I strongly recommend using the actual stereo mixes instead, and leaving the 5.1 for listening on an actual 5.1 system. The results will be much better.
Plus most if not all of the stereo mixes are PLII compatible anyway aren’t they? I remember getting surround effects from ship flyover and stuff from the VHS tapes as a kid. (The 1993 releases watched in about 2002 or so)
