Episode IX: The Rise Of Skywalker - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

Maybe they realized these devices have a tendency of getting blown up at the weak point by x-wings.

Currently, there is a “leaked plot” running around the internet. I haven’t read it, but people on reddit and discord are acting like it’s real and to be avoided if you don’t want to be spoiled. Is this going to be discussed here? If so, I’ll be jumping off the spoiler thread earlier than usual.

After watching the special look I’m more convinced now that there are going to be death star like weapons in TROS and I’m not looking forward to it. I love the SE so much and I gave TFA a pass with Starkiller, but to bring back more death stars is just something I am not looking forward to.

There’s a shot of some red laser exploding into a rock (after the “evil Threepio” shot) that could be “Starkiller II”. That would be a shame.

Besides that though I personally enjoyed the trailer. But I’m near certain Evil Rey is a force vision. The marketing is pushing the final battle to be Kylo and Rey (with a blue saber) on the Falcon in the rain. They show a shot of it in the trailer, and Rey very clearly is on the light side.

Did anyone save it?

I didn’t, but I could try to describe some of it. There were a bunch of shots of Rey, Finn, and Poe standing. There was a shot of what looked to be a Tantive IV ship. And Vader’s helmet is back (Kylo was standing next to it).

This is official? It looks like a fan poster with some videogame art of Palpatine slapped on.

It looks like it… ouch.

The Rise of Skywalker box office results: predictions and expectations
Time

If you look into it the lore of TFA isn’t all that confusing, there’s the New Republic which is dealing with Imperial Renamnt terrorists, the First Order, who even have their own ripoffs of Palpatine and Vader (one might ponder if their appearance is intentionally similar, to get more people remembering the OT). Leia wants to fight the First Order while the New Republic would prefer to let them be.

The problem is all in the presentation. In the thrill of the action, you don’t think like above. But they could have easily fixed this. Go to the Republic’s capital and listen in on a Senate meeting (like TPM). And properly build up Starkiller (like they did in Ep4 and 6 with the title crawls) instead of just showing up halfway through the movie and taking all the spotlight.

I don’t think TFA borrows all that much from ANH.

ANH is about stopping the Death Star. TFA is NOT about stopping Starkiller. TFA is about finding Luke Skywalker. We know this thanks to each episode’s crawls.

It is Starkiller that messes everything up. It makes no sense within the story, and feels like it just happened out of some “obligation” to recapture the success of the OT.

Up until Maz’s castle is attacked the film’s focus is entirely on finding Luke Skywalker, which is a brilliant focus because it a) takes out Luke who would otherwise detract from the focus and b) plays right into our emotions because we also want to see Luke. But then the “Hosnian” system is destroyed and we are distracted to a subplot no one cares about.

Everything else is different from ANH. There are many visual callbacks, but the context is entirely different. Yes, there’s a droid with a macguffin, but instead of the Death Star plans they are the map to Skywalker. Yes, there’s a hero stuck on a desert planet, but Rey is a scavenger who wants to stay on Jakku rather than leave Tatooine. Yes, there’s a cantina, but it makes sense in the story that Han’s friends would be in a cantina.

I like that.

There’s an upcoming book, linked below, that will describe the Skywalker Saga from “Anakin, Luke, and Rey’s point of view.”

https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Star_Wars_The_Skywalker_Saga

Could this book be used to create a narration for the films? For example, if we could get an “old Luke” voice actor, and have him speak lines from the book, we could create seamlessly blend the PT/OT with the ST as Luke explains to Rey the errors of the past, and why he thinks the Jedi must end.

From what I’ve seen, kids of this generation are preferring marvel movies over Star Wars movies. Not that they dislike Star Wars by any means. They like it, but not as much as Marvel, hence it doesn’t have the priority like it did in the 80’s and 2000’s. No one’s fault.

I think it’s that simple.

It’s kinda weird, because back when Lucasfilm was independent them making original films / new adaptations made more sense (following this vision of letting people make their movies). But now that it’s owned by Disney it doesn’t seem all that much a difference (Disney will still ensure the film follows their values, even if it’s Kennedy in charge instead of _____).

That being said, it’s always nice for Hollywood to focus on more original stories. So I’m positive.

Help: looking for / has anyone done... a 'Combining the trilogies' edit?
Time

I made “Vader” - a 7 in 1 edit, when I started here. it’s definitely not my best work, but if you are looking for a 3.5 hr movie that condenses the PT / RO / OT into a cohesive film (with a Vader POV; I cut out most of the rebellion’s scenes from the OT) then feel free to PM. My full outline can be found on its page.

Yeah. Reminds me a bit of the end of the Hunger Games, which had a good message on how governments repeatedly don’t work.

I feel like the ST could have explored the difficulties in reestablishing a government. The First Order could be a terrorist group seeking to undermine them. Maybe instead of “Starkiller Base” they spark a conspiracy and turn the galaxy against the New Republic to supporting the Empire once again. Then we would have had some powerful new themes that naturally build upon what we have learned from the OT.

Instead, I can only hope Episode 9 ends things in a way that we can definitively know this will not keep repeating itself.

I think the biggest concern for me is if Snoke just happened to pop up in between 6 and 7, what is stopping someone just like Snoke from popping up after 9’s “happy ending” and restarting this thing again and again?

If they had explained Snoke was tied to Palpatine, either a former apprentice or Palpatine himself, that would mean once Palpatine dies in 9 we can safely say the Sith are finished. That is why I hope we get an explanation for Snoke.

I hope for them to reveal Snoke is Palpatine. Before we knew about the Emperor’s return I would have called this idea preposterous, but now that we know Palpatine is returning it is going to feel very weird to seemingly forget about Snoke. I thought his death was a signal for Kylo to take the reigns of the big bad.
