Difference in quality of laserdisc players
Time
Moth3r mentioned the V8000 player and I was wondering how this stacks up to some of the higher end NTSC players. Laserman said that it was a step down from the HLD-X9/0, but does anyone know if it was better than say the CLD-97 or other consumer level players? I think I remember someone saying that the 97 was supposed to be the best USA model available at the time.

I also read that some of these industrial players can give smearing on CLV discs. Does anyone know if the V8000 or V4300D suffer from this? Anyone know what the V4300D is worth these days in working cond?

charliesheen: did you get a copy of the D925 user manual? PM me if you're still wanting it.

Blank DVD's: + or - ?
Time
It might be interesting to have a look and see where the discs were made. I know for a fact that even the better TDK or Verbatim brands here in NZ all seem to be made in china. Whereas from what I can tell in the USA and UK got a lot of Japanese media under the same brands and packaging.

Trust NZ to get the crappy chinese junk :(

Just as a matter of interest Mielr, where are the TDK or verbatim media that you spotted made? I assume you're in the USA?

... maybe the X0 team are just building up some suspense before the BIG release. I really hope so.

Without wanting to sound negative or put words into anyone’s mouth, I'm sure that the X0 team are probably reluctant to release anything publicly though for fear of GL and litigation. I know I would be if I were in their shoes.

I'd love to see their final version and I'd also be interested in finding out a lot more on how they achieved it. It'd be fantastic to get some of their techniques, scripts and ideas that they use out in the public domain for others to work with. Hell, I'd buy a legal copy of shake myself if I could have a go with LMs' scripts to see what can be done with some of my own video restoration projects.

A long time ago Laserman made this quote: "There are also some other interesting discoveries we made re the particular noise signature of some of the laserdiscs"

Does anybody know what these interesting discoveries were and how they could be utilised to improve LD footage?

Thanks for posting the link Moth3r. It's been awhile since I read that and it still blows me away. In fact, that's probably one of the biggest WOW threads on the forum. The first time I read it I almost literally wet myself!

That thread mentions some very interesting and highly exciting details of the Black Magic process. Do you know if anyone apart from the X0 team has perfected the technique for other s/w or if there is any further info on how to go about doing this?

Laserman mentioned that a webdoc was going to be posted on the X0 site, but it looks like the tutorial didn't quite make it there unfortunately. I would soooo love to learn more about this process.

Blank DVD's: + or - ?

DVD+R apparently has better error correction over -R, but it's probably all much of a muchness when doing DVD rips etc.
My 1 year old Pioneer set top player won't even recognise +R media, which kinda sucks. So just like Moth3r, for me it all comes down to what is most compatible with the gear I have. I stick with -R as it seems more compatible with more brands of gear.

This article talks about using archival quality DVD media and explains why +R is better:
http://adterrasperaspera.com/blog/2006/10/30/how-to-choose-cddvd-archival-media

The most important thing I've learned so far is to get decent media that will last. I've bought heaps of discs that are fine to begin with but after 6 months or so they crap out when the die fades and refuse to play properly or even copy on a PC anymore.

This article covers the major DVD manufacturers and ranks the quality of the blank media available. It also mentions which companies developed/support each format and has info on DVD-RAM at the bottom of the page:
http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

The general opinion on the net seems to be that Taiyo Yuden media is the best, but anything from Japan is also very highly regarded (Note: for people in NZ, forget about any brand of Japanese media. Currently, all DVD media sold here is made in either China, Taiwan or worse).

If your player accepts +R and you want the absolute 'Rolls Royce' quality of DVD media, then go for Taiyo Yuden DVD+R if you can find it.

Hope this helps.

Bent/Warped LD's
Time
Feck, that's a good site! Can't think how I missed that one. Thanks for that URL Moth3r.

FYI, I also found this atricle from Bob Nillan on the subject of curing LD warpage from around 1992ish:
http://www.access-one.com/rjn/laser/legacy/ld13.txt

This all seems pretty good advice, and it all seems to boil down to: heat the discs a bit and press the buggers flat again by sandwhiching them between a couple of sheets of glass and stack something heavy on top.

This sounds pretty straight forward, but to be honest I'm a bit concerned about using any amount of heat on my LD's to cure the warpage seeing as how LD's are made in different factories with different glues etc. That's why I thought it best to ask if anyone had successfully cured any of the Star Wars LD's or others produced by MPO.

Has anyone had to do this to their own LD's and would care to comment on how successful the fix was please?

Thanks again guys.

Bent/Warped LD's
Time
I recently bought a set of the French Star Wars LD's and was excited to see them arrive last night. They were sold as second hand but were brand new and never been played. They were even in the original shrink wrap ... and they were also quite badly warped.

Geez, I'm gutted :(

Does anyone know of a way or even if it is possible to flatten heavily warped discs, or do I just chuck 'em in the bin and get another set?

Many thanks guys.

.: Citizen's NTSC DVD / PAL DVD / XviD project :. (Released)
Time
Hi there,
I've just come across the Frence PAL set and am also looking at doing my own transfer. I know that Citizen used the French LD's to supliment the missing info from the German set that he started with which had some fades and cuts etc.
Before I go ahead an start the capture can someone please tell me if there is anything missing on the French set and wether I need to also buy the German set to make a complete movie? I guess the side breaks are probably in a different place, but was there any missing footage like there is on the German set? I think I remember someone stating that these sets were created from the same master tapes, which would lead me to believe that they are pretty similar. The LDDB says that they were made in different factories, so can anyone please tell me if either one is better in quality or has less noise than the other set?

Many thanks guys :)

Hi,
Newbie here. I won't bother asking the usual newbie questions, coz I can read.

When I first stumbled across this project a few weeks ago, my initial thought was 'wow, that's impressive!'. Having read the threads, my impressions have changed to 'F##K that's awesome!'.

I was hoping to make a donation on your website and possibly buy a t-shirt. I've sent an E to the XO email addy, but have had no reply. Are you guys still accepting donations or selling t-shirts?

To all the guys working on this project: awesome work dudes. I am seriously impressed and hope you continue.

To Laserman: I hope you are feeling better soon. Ozzy, Ozzy, Ozzy, Oi, Oi, Oi!
