Dawn before the race" is nice though. My only issue with it is the unfinished sfx work.
Sticks out like a sore thumb though, pretty different from most other deleted scenes in the 9000 series. I’m all in favor for the “it’s working!” scene.
Here’s a new version of this scene, with the music in much better shape. I used left and right channels to fill in the center whenever there is no dialogue or non-traffic foley, in order to only have one innocuous crossfade of the musical score. Sounds much better.

By the way, concerning this scene, something that’s always distracted me is how in the last shot the water fountain’s noise suddenly comes in really loud, despite not being there for every other shot in the scene. I wonder if it annoys anyone else? And if so, if it’s fixable/worth the effort?
I mean, no need for it to be someone with Harmy’s level of skills. Anyone could make a theatrical ROTS version if they so wish, just replace a couple of seconds of audio and use a few HDTV shots and you got it.

I think there’d be too many expectations from a lot of people that’d potentially ruin the films whichever way they go.
I’d be all in for more personal stories set during the Clone War, I think it’d really do womders for that time period. We get some of it from the TV shows, but nothing actually good.
But yeah if they want to stay away from the main saga at all costs I think the old republic era is definitely the most logical pick. I really don’t want it to be a Jedi story though, I think it’d be cool to see more Rogue One-like films.

I doubt they’ll go with anything “The Old Republic” theme. It’s a lose-lose situation.
About “General Skywalker.” That title is nowhere in the films and, while it’s plausible, I just don’t see benefit in tossing it in there. It’s appropriate for Anakin to be something of “the learner” and Anakin moves along in this film as someone deeply accustomed to be something of a slave. He and Obi-Wan are both knights, but he’s certainly newer at it.
Anakin having a padawan of his own prior to Episode III never felt right to me, personally.
100% with you here. I love The Clone Wars but it never felt like a bridge between AotC and RotS to me. I’ve always imagined that it’s its own thing, in sort of a parallel universe. Clone Wars (2003), on the other hand… but enough derailing the thread.
I’m afraid I am not having any luck with removing Palpatine’s lines about the Jedi killing “all the senators” and Anakin believing the Jedi will move against the Senate. The rear channels are free of dialogue… some of the time, but not during a critical shot. The music playing at that point does not appear on the soundtrack, either. I can’t do anything further than I already have with that conversation without making a big mess out of the music. Hopefully in this version we can somewhat believe that Anakin is choosing to believe these things about the Jedi.
Do you consider using stuff from “The Ultimate Edition” of the soundtrack which can be found on YouTube? You may be able to find the isolated music for the scene you’re looking for there.

I’m with Hal on this one. I think it’s clear they’re on a more equal footing. I also think Anakin calling Obi-Wan master strengthens “Now I am the master” in Star Wars.

Some predictions:
We will be seeing tons of articles/YouTube videos talking about how much Rian, Benioff & Weiss’ trilogies will be cinematic failures before they even come out (I personally am a bit skeptical of D&D myself).
Most fans on both sides of the spectrum are going to LOVE The Mandalorian. I think it’ll be so successful Fanvreau and Filoni will be given more future projects. Fans will love these two.
Sorta unrelated, but the new Avatar movies (at the very least Avatar 2) are going to perform exceptionally well at the box office despite some skepticism. General audiences will fall in love with Pandora again like they did in 2009.

It’s because of how cool the ride is. I went and really enjoyed it but it wasn’t really because it’s Pandora. None of the people I went with seemed to care about that, just that the ride is pretty cool.
What other version would they have? I’m pretty sure the deleted scenes as found on the Bluray are the best quality we’re going to get for a while.

I think that’s the wrong question. How has the mind trick been used so far in the series, storytelling-wise?
In the Original Trilogy it’s performed by Ben on Star Wars and then by Luke on RotJ, really showcasing to the audience how much he’s grown since the first 2 films and how he’s had his coming of age and is now a master. I don’t mean that as a literal Jedi Master, but as someone with an infinitely better grip of the force than on the previous 2.
On the Prequel Trioogy it’s frequently used by Qui-Gon, the Jedi Master in TPM, and Obi-Wan, but only when a fully realized master in AotC.
So I thought everyone assumed, like me, that it was a power that required a master’s knowledge of the force. For Rey to have learned that the force is real mere hours before successfully doing the mind trick for the first time kind of undermined all that I said above.
But it could’ve been any force power really. Luke didn’t do anything with the force (except for trusting his instincts) in the first film, and Anakin didn’t do anything besides having shown to have very quick reflexes in TPM, and he was very Gary Stu-ish already in that film, so Rey… ugh.
If she had been handled like Korra, as someone with different problems than the previous protagonist with a plot and story being completely different it probably could’ve worked better. But I also think the rehashed setting and plot of the first film doesn’t help Rey stand on her own without being drawn comparisons between her and Luke, especially “power”-wise.
But I disagree that “lack of motivation” is a problem with her character. Quite the contrary, while I couldn’t see why a lot of things that happened to her, well, happened, I could see that her reaction to said things and the shifting in her line of thoughts was very cohesive throughout the 2 ST films.
Anyway, a bit of a ramble towards the end, so, sorry about that. Thank you for your time.
The only part of the ST so far where Rey was a very enjoyable character to me was definitely the first half hour or so of TFA. Then she was OK until the mind trick, and after that it all went downhill…
Wonderful that you’re considering doing V6! Only thing I’m not really in favor of would be reinstating the Jar Jar sticking his tongue out moments, but it’s your edit, you do as you please. I think swapping the “Dawn Before the Race” deleted scene for a severely trimmed “it’s working” scene (possibly take inspiration in L8wrtr’s?) would be amazing. Anyway, great plans!

It’s similar to how I interpret the disturbance in the force from TESB. I see it as when Luke, after 3 or so years of doing as best as he could with the minimal instruction he’d been given, finally achieved a massive checkpoint when he was in the cave. That being that he, when in a situation of extreme danger, concentrated and focused, and ‘calmly’ used the force, which is absolutely a trait of the light side of the force and something that Ben tried to teach him, and that Yoda emphasizes.
Back to the ST, I can see the boy from Canto Bight supporting a direct opposing argument to the one I made. But the one you’re making is hard to argue against due to simply being something very hard to demonstrate on screen without losing focus of a film. Still, the question should be, do you think that this ‘pent up force potential’ is still around, or that it is now all concentrated on Rey and she’s the sole hero? I think that’s essentially what would show if she’s Rey Random in one way or in another, or even not at all, like DrDre and Anchorhead argued.
You said she won the cosmic lottery. Lotteries are random. That means she was randomly chosen. That’s what that word means. And whether she was “chosen” or not is completely debatable.
Touché, but considering how virtuous, and perfect she is, I take back the cosmic lotery statement, and maintain she was chosen to be the hero:
“Darkness rises, and light to meet it.”
She is thus her destiny to be the defender of the light, not by choice.
That’s still your interpretation. It was someone’s destiny to defend the light. She made the choice to be that someone.
Hello! Do you think that the “awakening” Snoke felt in TFA happened in more than one person? Rey states in TLJ “something inside me has always been there, and now it has awake”. My interpretation is therefore that the force chose her, in a somewhat similar way it chose Anakin in the PT.
Maybe what you say is true, that the awakening happened in more people, “someone’s destiny to defend the light”, but it’s harder to support that claim than it is to support the claim that she was chosen. There’s been no evidence that the awakening of the light to match the dark happened in other people. Even Snoke in TLJ identified said awakening as her.
Anyway, food for thought.
Hey man, I LOVED some of the stuff you did on your bunker redux version! Do you think you’ll be re-rotoscoping the blaster bolts from the fan film segments? They’re the only thing that doesn’t look like belongs in RotJ. I was very surprised to see that the cinematography actually matches the original film pretty well.
And do you plan on doing a version with the original structure of the third act? That is, get inside the bunker -> get caught -> battle -> win the battle -> blow up the shield generator
I think crank calling can be compared to ringing a doorbell and running away, so it isn’t an ungraspable joke to people in other eras I don’t think. But the joke, which did not make me laugh by the way, took me completely out of the movie. Not only due to its phrasing and execution, which looks and sounds like it came out of a superhero movie, but because it makes Hux look very stupid, and since I’m not sympathetic towards him or like him at this point for any reason, weakens his character in my opinion.
It also felt like it was something that TV shows like SNL would do, which just didn’t feel Star Warsy in the least. Most of the dialogue doesn’t - feels like something any director in the post-The Avengers era would try to write to be funny. The problem here is the execution. With different dialogue and a different way for lines to be delivered and the scene executed, it could work very well, like Han answering the imperial in Star Wars saying that everything’s fine works.
Not comparable to “who talks first?” but I think that it could be comparable to “Got a boyfriend? Cute boyfriend?”
Humor in Rogue One works very well though.
