STAR WARS: EP V "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - 12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW
Time

I agree 100% with Rhikter. Adywan has been very generous by not only allowing us to provide input into his project, but also by keeping us constantly up-to-date on his progress, even including trailers and screenshots. How many fanedits do that? Not too many. Many fanedits just "show up" when they're done. This has been a true labor of love for Ady, and I think some people here have forgotten that he is not a studio with an official release date, he is 1 man, spending the better part of each day contributing to this project. If he decides to make a change that could push the date back farther, then so be it. I am very anxious to see the final product, as we all are, I'm sure. But I'd much rather see him take the time he needs, and do it right. And he does have a life, also. It is quite common for those fanedits that do have an announced release schedule to be delayed. I've seen it happen several times. That's just how these things go.

Also, I'm glad that Adywan is holding back on the clips now, because I would rather just be surprised when it is done. Reading and contributing in the forum is fine, but I want something to be saved for when it is done. I came into the ANH:R project late in the game, but long enought to be witness to the great flipper debate, and when I saw the film, I was floored at the accomplishment. I saw very little footage beforehand, and I enjoyed it that much better upon first viewing. I think if people want to donate, that's great. I would if I wasn't flat-out poor these days. But to expect something in return just isn't right in my opinion. After all, we will all be rewarded in the end, right?

Anyways, that's my 2 cents for the night. Sorry to ramble on.

Info: 'Captain Eo' - Laserdisc on Ebay; the movie or documentary?
Time

Just took a quick look at the ebay page. He is not claiming that it is a retail laserdisc - he says it is one of the actual discs that was used to play the film at Disneyland. It is therefore possible that it is legitimate, though I don't have any idea if Disney actually used laserdiscs to play the films. I also noted that he has been on Ebay for a long, long time, and has 100% feedback, which does give him some credibility. How he managed to get an official copy of the laserdisc is anybody's guess though.

I don't need a movie to be completely explained to me, in fact, I always hate it when a movie is dumbed-down for an audience. However, I do feel that a major set-piece that becomes the primary focal-point for the last quarter of the film should be properly introduced to us so we understand where are heroes are in the city. That is my only complaint about this. We don't even see the outside of the vane until after Luke goes flying out the window. Up to that point, we have no idea where the chamber is, or where this is all happening. A mystery is one thing, but just leaving the audience discombobulated is something else.

Nice joke about the AT-AT lasers, by the way.

Looking at the Marvel comic adaptation, it isn't even clear where they are. Maybe the illustrators didn't know either. lol.

"It's a trap!"

Again a blast shield thunders down, cutting Luke off from those he hopes to save...

Corridor by corridor, it continues...separating him even from artoo-detoo! Until at last there is only ONE PATH, leading to the carbon-freezing chamber...

and what Luke now realizes was inevitable.

Not that this means anything, just interesting.

Well, Ady, you do make sense with how you explained that. Indeed, your parallels with coal miners does make sense to me. I think it is the fact that Luke arrives there so abruptly that has many of us confused. I do agree that not everything in the movies needs to be spelled out to the viewer, I just think that in this case, it might have helped a bit to establish where Luke was as he approached the chamber, just to help us get our bearings. I do like the idea of maybe widening the vane somewhat, just to better support the action inside.

Come to think of it, an establishing exterior shot of the vane itself, with maybe a close-up on the carbon freezing area, right at the beginning of the scene with Han at the chamber, would have have done wonders to help us understand where they are. From then on, we would have known that the entire battle between Luke and Vader takes place in the vane.

I do think that logically, based on how other things happen, it now seems to me that the room may have been intended to be in the vane, but it still doesn't seem right to me, and the look of the vane does not help me buy it any better. That room just doesn't seem to belong perched inside that dome on the vane. In the film "The Black Hole", a lot of time is shown whilst the crew is traveling throughout the Cygnus early on, taking air cars through a travel tube, and even a long elevator up to the command tower. I totally believed the layout of the ship as it was shown to me. Now I realize they had different priorities in that film to build up tension as they traveled trough the empty ghost ship, but the fact that the door closes behind luke, and just seconds later he is in the carbon freezing chamber, just adds a level of confusion to the viewer. A quick shot of Luke traveling through the tube/hallway to get to the vane is all it would have taken for us to get it.

What doesn't make sense to me is that if the chamber is really supposed to be located in the vane, then how are people supposed to get to it realistically? Every time somebody needs to go to the chamber, they are supposed to walk carefully along that long walkway to get to the fin first, then take the elevator up? Talk about inconvenient. It just doesn't seem realistic that that room would be in such a difficult-to-get-to location.

Nice job with the notes there, Janskeet. The curve of the hallway is definitely questionable to say the least.

I'm amazed to see that Lucas really didn't have anything planned out in regards to the location of the carbon freezing chamber. To me, it makes no sense that the chamber would be located in the vane. You mean to tell me that Vader, all the stormtroopers, and the prisoners all took a trip up there to test the carbon freeze? I don't see any way that it makes sense to put that room up there. I had always assumed that it was located somewhere in the main city itself. But after following this thread, it does seem that Lucas did not actually map this out in the slightest. The problems with the room Leia and Han are in earlier is another great example of how there is no continuity at all. Doors lead to nowhere, and hallways that should be there don't even exist. I don't know how much of this can actually be fixed - I'm afraid there's a point where we're going to have to accept that the layout of Cloud City just doesn't make sense. Of course, we can always hope that Ady will pull something off with his magic!

At any rate, it's great to see those with a good grasp of these issues using their skills to illustrate them.

Great job putting that together so quickly, Davnes007. That's pretty close to what I was thinking. I'd like to see what it would look like with the Probe droid emerging after the Wampa attack, but this is also an interesting take. I think it flows quite well with just the one impact.

Yeah, Bingowings, it does seem like you don't get much of a feeling about her latent force abilities during TESB. When I was younger, I thought it was Luke sending the signal so strong and direct to Leia, and that was why she picked it up. I didn't give her any credit for it until ROTJ announced her secret.

I love most ROTS sabers for the reasons that ady hates them. I read millions od topics about how the sabers should looks etc etc. I dont care if he will make them with more gradient glow! I know the fact that what he is going to do will be awesome!

My view on lightsabers through out the enite saga is that they should not have a pointed edge, never liked the idea and could never understand why they chose to do it in epi 3. ESB has the best lightsabers in my opinion.

I agree. I always loved the sabers in TESB. The pointy sabers don't look right.

Ady, sorry to hear you're not feeling well. Hope you get better soon. I'm glad you came in and mentioned the things you did to get this thread back on track. It was getting a bit shaky in here for a bit.

I'm only mentioning this because it had been brought up a couple pages ago again. As far as the probe droid crashing twice, I never cared for it as is, because it didn't seem to fit in with the rest of the trilogy, since that was the only time an event had been shown twice from different perspectives. When I was young, I used to think it was 2 separate probe droids. Now I can see that they meant it to be the same, but I still don't particularly like how they handled it. I think it is because of the amount of time between when you see the first impact and the second. You not only see the impact twice, but you see the probe droid rise up and leave after the first strike, then you see it from the beginning again. Here's an idea of how I think it might have looked more seamless (wish I had some skill here to put together a mock-up):

1) Show the Probe droids getting fired from the Star Destroyer in the beginning, as is.

2)But , instead of showing the probe droid immediately entering the atmosphere of hoth, cut from the probe droids being fired from the Star Destroyer to an establishing shot of Hoth, without the probe droid arriving yet.

3) Now introduce Luke on his Tauntaun.

4) Then cut to the shot from space of the probe droid entering the atmosphere of Hoth, followed by the first impact (untouched). Do not show the probe droid rising yet.

5) Now cut to Luke grabbing his scope and checking it out, talking to Han, etc.

6) After Luke gets swiped by the Wampa and dragged away, then show the probe droid rising and flying off, followed by the next scene, at the base.

Not sure how this would actually look. I'm pretty sure this would be very easy to cut together, but the music would probably be affected, so I'm not expecting that this can really be done. However, I think if this had been done something like this to begin with, it would have seemed more seamless and a lot less confusing to people.

Not to get too sidetracked, but I always enjoyed The Black Hole too. Awesome music, very moody atmosphere, and great visuals. A flawed movie, for sure, but still fun to watch. And Maximillian was scary as hell.

Sorry to hear the news about the (old) falcon, Ady, but very glad to hear about the (new) falcon. Thanks, sketchrob. I think we're all very appreciative of your contribution to this project.

The trailer looks fantastic, as everybody else has commented. I loved the ambient light on Luke's face from the lightsaber - a nice touch that adds alot to the scene. Hope you decide to do it in a few other places as well. And I was blown away by the new cloud city reveal.

Like others, I'm sad to see the tie fighter lasers go. Regarding a comment made about the ties maybe firing at the asteroids instead of the falcon, the problem I see with that is that I'd imagine it could become even more dangerous if ties were firing at the asteroids. My guess would be that the lasers would not completely destroy the asteroids and clear a path, as much as they would just shatter the rocks into thousands of smaller pieces that would be even more likely to smash into. Therefore, I would think that the ties would try to avoid hitting the asteroids as opposed to firing on them.

I do agree that ties have certainly fired on the falcon in the past - look at ANH when the falcon makes it's escape from the Death Star. Tarkin wants to track the falcon to the Rebel base, but that doesn't seem to stop the ties from firing on it just the same. Of course, if Adywan feels that the scene is too cluttered, or otherwise distracting, that I can totally understand.

Anyways, happy belated-belated birthday, Ady. Good luck with the Ebay thing. Overall, I've had great experiences through them, but I did get burned once really bad. I bought an item cash (I know, dumb move) because that's all they accepted, and that should have tipped me off, but it was for my girlfriend for Christmas. The seller never shipped the item, and ignored my responses. But Ebay didn't help because it wasn't done through Paypal. So I was out by $75. As long as you used Paypal you should have recourse.

"Jurassic Park was a great example of how even early cgi, done right, has a place in film"

They did use alot of elements besides just cgi they even used puppets for the head. That movie was way ahead of its time. I saw the documentary of it. They were gonna use stop motion animation. But they pushed technology. I don't think any film in the past 10 years has raised the bar quite like jurrassic park. They made me sink in my chair with the raptors. It is just a beautiful film. I wish spielberg would make films like he did from the late 70's to early 90's. His works were always so beautiful.

I agree. I think another outstanding example of cgi is Final Fantasy:The Spirits Within. I realize that many did not like the storyline, but I think that as far as an animated film goes, it still stands tall as one of the best, visually speaking. And check out Vexille also. Mind-boggling animation.

And yeah Disney disgusts me nowadays. They had such beautiful animation. My girlfriend owns all the classics. I can't believe they dropped traditional animation in favor of all cgi. Walt would be crying if he were alive, but then it wouldn't have happened that way.

Now back to topic...

Concerning Focuspuller's comments lately, I do think that when working on a project such as this, it doesn't hurt to be careful. Remember what happened to fanedit.org a while back. And keep in mind that studios, as well as the RIAA, MPAA, and software developers, all keep an eye on the torrents for copyright infringement. Just take a look here http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2009/05/france-set-for-showdown-with-eu-after-passing-3-strikes-law.ars and you can see how serious governments are gettings with copyright. Caught 3 times downloading copyrighted material? No internet for you! Come back, one year! Now, I'm sure that most studios do not scour the internet daily looking for new forums that may or may not be infringing on their copyrights (It's easier to just watch the torrents). But Adywan has certainly put his name out there with his ANH:R project, and has certainly gotten some attention. I wouldn't be surprised one bit if somebody at lucasfilm is indeed keeping one eye on us over here, just in case things get too out-of-hand. We're fortunate that for the time being, fanedits are tolerated, for the most part, by studios. I'm sure Focuspuller is just concerned for are continued survival.

I certainly have no objections to Ady's use of the "Adywan Productions" logo, though. I thought it was very tastefully done in ANH:R, and was right where it should have been - at the introduction of the DVD, not the film itself. Many other fanedits contain the faneditor's logo of some sort, and Ady's is certainly the nicest I've seen.
