Take a loot around. Very few of us have "serious" avatars. bkev is a picture of himself with a Megaman helmet, I am an Imagination Land Cylon, Ferris is Lord Helmet, Xhonzi's is Darth Vader being crowned by the Emperor, and ImperialFighter is a tiny stormtrooper with a huge head, Anchorhead's is a picture of a whiny farm boy. And here I have only mentioned a few of the more serious ones...

Anyway, rest assured, your avatar will have no bearing on the perception of your posts content.

CO's is a picture of a cow swimming with a dolphin...

Although I am confused... I thought Octorox was a lady... but her/his new avatar has me not so sure...

Evidently my old title "is not a chick" didn't help at all.... Btw If it helps I though Gaffer was a lady for a little bit too....

Reviews have been pretty positive. I think I'm going to make the leap. I looks like it will be a really fun event film and not 2 hours of mind melting mess like Transformers 2 was. And to the person who said it looks like a cartoon, whats wrong with cartoons? I think you guys need to lighten up a little bit ;).

And To VINH, I gotta say that the political connotations of EpIII was really no more overt than any of the political undertones of the OT . You just happen not to agree with with some of the allegorical ties EPIII suggests. It draws just as heavily from other sources like the Vietnam War and the rise of the Roman Empire as it does to the Bush Administration. It deals with the ideas of decietful politicians, conspiracies, and fear mongering which doesn't have to be about the Bush Administration, although some would say it reflects the general climate at the time. Lucas said he was more concerned with referencing Vietnam than Bush.

(Note that I am not defending EpIII as a great film, it is still highly flawed and I believe many reviews (particularly Ebert, and I love that guy!) were very inflated and just didn't have any demands on integrity to the original series)

Also, The reason EpIII was positively received by critics (as I see it)  is because it wasn't boring (like EpII) and it wasn't overtly goofy and childish nor ridiculously overhyped (like EPI). The dialogue was poorly written but it did provide the great spectacle and grand scope that people were looking for.

(P.S. I realize that my avatar is not lending any validity to the seriousness of my argument)

how about post a video on youtube asking GL to give us a poper release.

It could help.

I was thinking the same thing. We need a video showing the lackluster quality of the GOUT, comparing it to, say, Ady's AVCHD version. Like a commercial!

Got a response back from Grant Imahara! He said the OOT is the only reason he still has a laserdisc player. I replied that we deserve it on blu-ray and asked him to pass the petition on!

That is awesome. Love Mythbusters. I be constantly checking the petition to see if he signs.

Good stuff Jay, and I really like the final wording you've come up with for this latest petition requesting a decent Blu-ray release for the OOT.

Whether GL decides to tinker even more with the colour/sound/'creative choices' of his 'Special Editions' for their Blu-ray debut or not, or even if he adds a couple more extra bells and whistles to them for their eventual '3D conversion' release....an anamorphic, cleaned-up release of the original, unenhanced theatrical versions is definately long-overdue.

There is no such thing as an anamorphic blu-ray and there would be really no point to do a whole new transfer and restoration and then just release it on DVD. I'm hoping for something akin to the Blade Runner and Close Encounter's releases, with all 3 cuts (plus the final cut or whatever) via seamless branching.

Film, like all art forms (and I like to look at it as an art created by artists, not as entertainment products created by a corporations), can not be entirely separated from politics. I just don't get why so many people hate on films that decide to do it honestly and upfront rather than try to be tricky and subliminal. Wall-Es political undertones were honestly and subtly integrated into the story by the filmmakers and were not Disney propaganda. Even Jaws (Vietnam) and Star Wars (Cold War) had political context. I find it far more grating when films try to "sell" themselves by just giving people what they want to see and what will make the most money. Let's agree to disagree.

As for 3D, I saw UP and 3D and loved it. I'll definitely see Avatar in 3D just for the spectacle, but I'm not sure I like what Iv'e seen in the trailers.

ummm....Maybe it's because the metal is gray? I don't see why it would be blue, honestly? Have you ever thought the color of the metal is gray and the light is neutral toned? It's not necessarily fluorescent light, honestly if the scene is perfectly white balanced the metal SHOULD be gray. I find blue metal for more strange.

You're right that the colours on the DVD are awful, but unless everything in a space is neutrally coloured, and the lights are all identical, nothing will be perfectly grey. Light bounces around all the over the place (moon landing deniers, I'm talking to you! ;) ) It's often an incredibly subtle effect, but when it's gone your brain knows - there's something about that pic that just makes me squint.

Edit: Radiosity! That's the word I'm looking for:

DE

I agree, but if space is black, the ships are gray, the lights are white, the floors are gray, the walls are gray then what colors are reflecting? In your picture it was the red floor was reflecting light. And even so, Ady's versions are not perfectly gray, they are slightly blue, because starlight is blueish.

I love the idea of Imported Hoth Water.  Moisture Farmers.  Weird.  Maybe the taxation of water along the trade routes was just too expensive.

Wow, you're right.  That "taxation of trade routes" angle sounds like a great idea too.  Maybe someone should make a Star Wars movie about that!

They made a Star Wars movie about taxation and trade routes. They had to throw JarJar in every seen to keep people interested...

Idea: a Star Trek 2009 Extended Cut?
Time

Personally, I think a lot of the scenes they cut would have cleaned up some of the plot holes in the film (what was Nero doing all those years?) and strengthened the character relationships (specifically Spock). The only scene that I don't think should be put back in is the scene where Kirk apologizes to the Orion girl who ends up not being Gaila. There is really no reason to include a whole scene to set up one joke, there is no plot or character development there. Honestly, It almost makes Kirk look more douchey, which probably wasn't the intention.

Irregular sequels and spiritual sequels?
Time

On the games side

Super Mario RPG (almost straight JRPG with a few Mario elements)>(spiritual sequel)Paper Mario (Many more platforming and action elements thrown in)>(quirky sequel)Super Paper Mario (2D Platformer with heavy RPG elements)

That doesnt include PM: TTYD which was pretty much a straight sequel of Paper Mario and the Mario and Luigi games, which are like spiritual sidequels to the Paper Mario games....weird

It's extremely subtle, to the point of not really removing the pink caste. I would take a look at Adywan's TPM color correction, maybe use that as a source.

I'm getting the 64-bit pro version soon via the student discount (a nice $45 dollars), although since Im installing it on my MBP with Snow Leopard I probably wont be booting into it all that often. You can clean install with an upgrade version right? I have a partition with Home Premium Vista 32-bit (which I bought in full but really dont care for) which I just plan to erase and install over.

Why does the EU hate villains?
Time

xhonzi said:

I was thinking about this more on a 2 hour drive I had to make today.  Here are my thoughts:

As I said above, "I think truth is truth, and good is good, and that there are people who wrongly disagree."  I mean by this something similar to what an Atheist believes about believers in God.  The Atheist doesn't believe in God, but he readily admits that believers do.  I don't believe in Moral Relativism, but I readily admit that some people do.  And, more to the point, that a lot of bad people do.  In fact, I think that it is hard to be a truly bad person if you don't believe in Moral Relativism.

When you watch the Godfather (or Watchmen, or countless others) you see people that are bad, but they don't believe that they are.  They don't sit around and think of themselves as the bad guys.  They think of themselves doing what needs to be done in their circumstances.  Sometimes the storyteller is also telling you that YOU would also do as they do if you were in their circumstances.  Sometimes the storyteller is simply telling you how the bad people rationalize what they are doing so that they can continue doing the things they want to do.

Would you really like to see villains who are simply bad for the sake of being bad?  How interesting is that?  How many people are really like that?  I think an honest non-Moral-Relativistic storyteller has to show the logic that villains use to do the bad things they do.  I think the storyteller can do this without showing Moral Relativity.  Unless the Storyteller begins to make the same case the villains do, and then you have something else on your hands.

Well sometimes there are conflicting motives that are hard to pin down. Like killing people to save other people. Its hard to label someone as all bad or all good because often they a grey, they have a mix. I do believe that people around the world have different values, but I also believe there are universal ideas of what's bad and what's good that we all share.
