Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, Another Happy Sanding. (Released)
Time

The other edit I’ve been trying to accomplish is getting Padme to name-drop Obi-Wan in the second “Seeds of Rebellion” scene but I haven’t been able to find suitable audio. I tried poaching her saying “Master Kenobi” from Attack of the Clones but it had too much background music and not the right inflection.

So, since I updated my extended edition of ROTS, I’ve been working on this again. I’m trying to rework the “Plot to Destroy the Jedi” deleted scene into something that isn’t redundant with the war table scene (The reference in The Clone Wars kind of convinced me to keep it). Here’s what I have right now: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1lhItqeRBSgVbRQnN3Jc_wfIzPvP0hg4D/view?usp=sharing

Unfortunately in the surround mix you can hear some whispers of Yoda’s original dialogue in the other audio channels. Does anyone happen to know where I can find the music that was originally used in this scene? Was it something from Episode II?

EDIT: Sorry, just fixed the permissions on the link.

Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, Extended Edition (Released)

V3 of this Extended Edition is in the process of uploading with the following changes.

-Improved audio quality due to working with (mostly) lossless or high quality sources and encoding at a higher bitrate.

-The rear surround channels are fixed. Audio should now play properly in all 6 channels.

-The deleted scenes have been swapped out for higher quality AI-upscaled versions by bryantmh

-Using some creative editing, the 3rd “seeds of the rebellion” scene has been integrated at a different point in the film. I was always annoyed by how it broke up Obi-Wan’s escapades and I hope this placement flows a bit better.
Here’s a clip: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1larmejsFPZ8qMJ4fY6mjR9kUonhwBmbo/view?usp=sharing

I’ll let everyone know when it’s up so you can send me a PM.

Info Wanted: What are the 'definitive' Hobbit and Lord of the Rings edits?
Time

Hey all, I just watched Linday Ellis’s excellent video series on The Hobbit which sparked an interest in checking out the best fanedits for these films. I watched Kerr’s Arkenstone edition of An Unexpected Journey years ago and quite liked it, but never checked out his other cuts. I also have a copy of the Maple Films 3-in-1 edit but haven’t watched it in full. What are considered the best edits these days? I’m not a book purist so that aspect isn’t important to me, I just thought the films as released were too bloated and unfocused.

As for Lord of the Rings, I’m someone who has a hard time deciding between the Theatrical and Extended editions. I feel the pacing is better in the Theatrical versions but the Extended Editions include some bits that I think are essential. Are there any edits that hybridize the two?

Alright I’ll go through some of those but in general I’ll just say, even though my edit is coming after Hal’s and we have some changes in common, it’s not supposed to be an alternate “Rey Nobody” version of his, we worked on ours in parallel for the most part and have different goals. I still haven’t even watched his yet in full! Shame on me I know, but basically point being this is an edit of the original film, not of Hal’s edit, so that’s why you might be seeing a lot of discrepancy. And no worries if there’s changes you prefer in Hal’s, I hope once I’m done people feel free to mash up what they like about mine and his.

Of course, I understand that you have different goals with your edit and I wasn’t trying to imply you should implement everything Hal did. Honestly, the fact that I brought in comparisons to Hal’s edit so frequently is because I haven’t watched the theatrical version since I saw it in theaters (only once). I bought the Blu-Ray and instantly started watching Hal’s workprints, so for better or worse anything closer to the theatrical is going to stick out to me.

Okay so I took a look at the workprint. Overall I think you really nailed your primary goal of removing Rey’s Palpatine lineage from the film. I’m pretty surprised at just how well it works. I have some minor quibbles, and some of the other choices you made about what to take out and what to leave in make me lean toward Hal’s Ascendant as my overall preferred edit, but I think it’s a really solid effort overall. Here are some more specific notes:

I hope you’re able to implement more neutral color grading in your final release. Watching this reminded me how much I dislike the film’s original color grading, which feels un-Star Wars-like.

Like KumoNin, I don’t really understand the choice to remove the Snoke line, especially since you left the vats of cloned Snokes in the film. Along the same lines, Hal made a collection of minor changes meant to suggest some context as to just how Palpatine returned, and I miss those here. In his edit, we can infer that he’s an imperfect clone body possesed with Palpatine’s spirit, but like the theatrical version, I don’t think the situation is quite as clear here.

I understand the need to remove the line “she’s not who you think she is” but I think the transition out from the first Exogol scene doesn’t feel as strong. Would there be a way to keep the line “You will rule the galaxy as the new emperor” and Palpatine’s sly smile? I feel like it suggests the fact that Palpatine is selling Kylo down the river in this moment.

I like the elegance of Hal’s implementation of removing lightspeed skipping and shifting the chess scene to the end of the film. I think what you have works fine though. However, with lightspeed skipping still in, I wonder if it might make more sense just to revert to the theatrical scene order.

The way you constructed new visions for Rey and Kylo is brilliant, as always.

“Somehow, Palpatine has returned” 🤢 I was originally not a proponent of the Fortnite audio in Hal’s edit, but I have admit that I miss it’s use covering this line.

I think you may have extended the tail end of the First Order conference scene? The transition out felt a little less abrupt to me, which is a good thing.

I’d hate to give Rose any less screen time, but I wonder if anyone has considered just cutting the awkward Snap Wexley exchange. It’s such a slight scene and the comedy really doesn’t work for me. I think it might be better to just follow our heroes in this moment.

I really liked your implementation of excising Finn and Poe’s bickering in the tunnels. I caught the flipped shot, but I think it works, even though there’s a slight continuity error where Poe is bringing up the rear and then suddenly in front of the pack. I think I prefer it to Hal’s shuffling of scenes in this section.

Nice job extending Chewie’s death, although there’s a moment where I feel like the rescore and the original music are competing in the mix.

I would add the squeaky wheel scene from the doc.

I think the recut Force bond duel works well. I think you pretty seamlessly excised the heroics of Rey’s parents.

“I wanted you to see it. Who you are.” - I liked what you had in an earlier version: “I wanted you to see it. Your power.” To go along with that:

The hangar scene is close to perfection, love “I feel the pull to the light. You the darkness.”, love the brief flash-forward/vision. The only thing that doesn’t work for me is “your power”. Perhaps you can borrow something from my mockup and use “you don’t just have power. You have dark power.” https://drive.google.com/file/d/1kYcr_q8vZfmUBAkINFcC-tnqR7PMDRIl/view?usp=sharing.

I would also prefer Kylo just say “You will kill him” because “you will kill Palpatine” sounds like an obvious audio edit, and it’s already clear he’s talking about Palpatine.

I miss seeing the Ewoks when Rey and friends head to the moon of Endor.

I know you’re probably tired of hearing me talk about Hal’s edit in comparison to yours, but I miss Hal’s addition of the mystical Sith whispers as an alternative to the dagger becoming a magical protractor that just happens to line up with the Death Star wreckage.

Kylo’s line to Rey “the dark side is in our nature” doesn’t really jive with how he explained the Dyad. Could it be edited to “the dark side is in your nature”?

The Duel of the Fates cue works pretty well, although I prefer Hal’s more subtle implementation.

“Ben, come home.” Love it!

I wish the stuff about the Death Star superlasers on the Star Destroyers was cut. The destruction of Kijimi feels as pointless as it did in the theatrical version.

The cuts on Ahch-to are seamless. Nice job!

Can you cut the line about Holdo maneuvers? I feels like it’s uneccesarily overexplaining something that didn’t need to be explained in TLJ.

Nice job cutting around Rey Palpatine in the scenes on Exogol. I feel like reducing the number of scene changes helps here.

I really appreciated Rey having no response to “You’re weak, like your parents.” It really makes it seem like Palpatine is preying on her insecurities.

Kylo finding Vader’s TIE Advanced in the Death Star wreckage seems…convenient? Although I do like the symbolism.

“I’m no one” Something about the way this line is placed, mixed or acted doesn’t work for me in this context. “I’m all the Jedi” is cheesy but I think it works better with what we have.

I miss the full jonh ghost scene. Palpatine being bested by Rey deflecting the lightning on her own feels weird after he made quick work of Mace Windu when he tried the same strategy. I felt the ghosts lending their force energy made this moment a little more believable. I understand the desire to have Rey stand on her own two feet though.

I noticed a lot of stuttering when the fleet gathers before the “rising up” montage, presumably due to slowdown in post. I would bring in the Naboo shot if it meant preserving the original timing of the footage.

I noticed quite a bit of stuttering during the celebration scene too, although good job removing the weird Jannah and Lando moment.

End scene works well, although I’ve grown fond of the alternate take on “Rey Skywalker”. I wonder if “Just Rey” would even be more appropriate for this particular edit?

Snooker did the first version of the Naboo shot and skenera worked on that to get it to what’s in the edit now.

I’ll check in with skenera then, see if it’s possible.

The other thing I’m curious about is the shot of Ben on the Death Star that’s been slowed down. I have a few moments in my own edit where I utilize Premiere’s built-in frame interpolation effect for slow-mo - but you can only push it so far, and there’s a couple of shots where I’ve pushed it too far, but I also kinda need to.

Credit has been given to Octoroxx and Luka Frik… wondering who here has the technology that I can poke for a request.

I used the “Optical Flow” effect in Premiere.

I’m sorry if this his been asked before Octorox but are you planing to do an edit of ROTS similar to your TPM and AOTC edits?

Maybe. I was planning on it, but my edits are in a weird state right now. It was recently brought to my attention that V2 of Episode 1 is missing surround audio channels, which will take a while to fix since the original Premiere files aren’t working preoperly. I also wanted to do a V2 of Episode 2 which I haven’t gotten around to yet, and I’d have to redo that one from scratch. Suffice it to say, it might happen, but not anytime soon.

I personally recommend Hal’s Labyrinth of Evil as my go-to edit for Episode III. His I and II edits are a little too conservative for my tastes, but I think his III mostly strikes the right balance.

Welp I checked the file along with V2 of my Faster, More Intense edit, and you’re right. There’s no sound in the rear channels. Even worse, I have no way of going back and fixing it without recutting from scratch since Premiere no longer supports ac3 files, which I used in my edit. I’m kind of at a loss as to what to do here. I may be able to recreate the Episode 3 extended edit but Episode I would be a whole lot of work. I’ll have to think on the best way to approach this.

This is a really good edit, my only problem is that even though it has 6 channel sound only 3 of the channels actually play audio. I would like to use this as the base for my edit and I’d like my saga to have consistently 6 channel sound, would you be able to fix it?

Hmm, that’s strange, and shouldn’t be the case. I’ll have to take a closer look at it.

Can anyone else confirm that they only get sound out of 3 channels?

I can host the separate audio track also, at least for long enough for anyone who already has V4.

I think I’ll make it the default audio option, with the existing ‘purist’ track remaining in place. This track omits the '04 Fett voice alteration and modified “a Jedi Master who instructed me” line.
Or, I could add a third track with the new Fett voice, but the former option would be simpler and more intuitive.

Somebody watched this week’s Mandalorian.

Personally I think the two track solution would work for most people and keep things simple.

As for the Battlefront lines, “As You Wish” is the only one that’s an exact match and I’d be in favor of using it. The others are slightly rephrased.

Hello Octorox, I was wondering if you were thinking about updating your extended cut with the new bluray source for audio/video ?
If so, you can count me as interested at least 😄

I know there are other extended edition projects around, but yours was focused on making it seamless as much as possible, without editing out other stuff (even if I wouldn’t dislike a very light edits points to remove a few things).

Hey Malastrana. I personally don’t plan on doing this. I don’t have the know-how to output in HDR and I think in SDR, the difference between the two sources isn’t significant enough to be worth the effort (ROTS was shot in 1080p and mastered in 2K after all). I also borrowed some of the scene integrations (such as the 1st Seeds of the Rebellion scene) from Labyrinth of Evil, which still uses the older Blu-Ray source.

EDIT: Anyone who hasn’t gotten a DM, please DM me and I’ll send you the link. Sorry, I don’t check this thread very often.

Wait! What about the part where the Special Edition screwed up their enhanced background. After Lando betrays Han and Leia to Vader, Adywan changed the background with the existing Special Edition background for consistency.

I don’t think that was ever part of this project. If you want those kind of fixes it’s best to just watch Revisited.

I’ll have to keep this in mind for a potential V2. It’a a change done by the ‘Fixing Disney Star Wars’ guys. Whatever you think of them, I thought this was an interesting little tweak.

Zorri says that the bounty on Rey may cover them.

Rey knocks them all down and draws her saber on Zorri and she points a gun at her.

Rey: “We could really use your help. Please.”

Zorri: “[Not that you care, but I think you’re] okay.”

Rey: [“I care.”] Offers her a hand

—-

This tweak seems to reduce the ‘fan fiction character’ phenomena in which an adversary seems to make an odd statement by complimenting Rey.

Not really a fan of this change to be honest.
