I think just “I…I’m a Jedi” works fine. I don’t think it needs to be “I am a Jedi”
I think just “I…I’m a Jedi” works fine. I don’t think it needs to be “I am a Jedi”
I think we should keep Rise of Skywalker’s bad decisions native to Rise of Skywalker, personally.
Yup
I honestly think it works okay to have “you are nothing” over the shot of Rey. This whole change is a really great idea.
“Leia told me that she sensed the end of her Jedi path.”
I’d really like this if it can be made to sound seamless. I’d really prefer it not be tied to Ben at all. I think it’s in character for Leia to end her Jedi training because she feel she can do more good in getting the new government off the ground.
Yeah, my personal vote would be no to the Star Destroyer establishing shot, yes to using the new Mustafar footage in place of the Rogue One footage.
Honestly I’d be very sad to see the “Babu Frik, he’s one of my oldest friends” line go.
IMO, the best version of the Mustafar opening is still the “1-shot” version present in Ascendant V1. The Castle shot still looks janky and the new shot doesn’t really flow with the others.
The first thing I would do is cut everything that is only there to tease a future film that is never going to happen: Martian Manhunter, Lex Luthor and Deathstroke, the Knightmare sequence etc.
Then I would focus on making small cuts here and there for pacing, and reintegrating some small bits from the Whedon version that work. I think there’s a great 3ish hour cut of this film.
Poppa, I did exactly as you instructed but the audio was still playing in the left speaker despite being in a dedicated center channel. It works fine with left or right setting but it won’t isolate to the center channel for some reason?
ThisIsCreation the new EQ track seems to have the gain turned up to 11. I’m getting a lot of hissing from that clip when I import it to PP so I wasn’t able to match the current dialogue levels with your effort.
Here’s an update anyway…
Changed the timing of the sequence so it’s a little tighter.
Removed Lukes Close-up
Changed the timing on Rey’s close-up to match the new dialogue.
Ooh I wasn’t sold on this line before but I actually really like this.
Looking good!
I like this idea. I’d love to see the Luke puppet brush the dust off his shoulder, eliciting a laugh from the children.
My two cents: the trailer music uses an entirely different musical language than Williams, and is thus impossible to integrate into the film.
Yup
Honestly, it sounds to me like people on here have two different approaches to fixing this film:
- Make TROS become more in line with what TLJ set up.
- Make TLJ become more in line with what TROS settles, and fix a couple issues with TROS here and there.
Hmm, I wonder which one we should change? The critically acclaimed, thoughtful sequel that questions deeply-held assumptions about the Star Wars universe and pushes the franchise into exciting new directions? Or the frantic, pandering mess that goes out of it’s way to retcon anything remotely interesting in the previous film and wraps up this 9-movie saga with a whimper?
Obviously I’m being snarky but I’m starting to think the best sequel trilogy is actually a sequel duology. Ben’s arc is the only thing that even comes close to working for me in TROS and that’s only because of Adam Driver’s stellar performance. Hal and DominicCobb have both done a lot to make this movie more enjoyable, but to (mis)quote Count Dooku “The movie cannot be fixed. It’s time to start over.”
I want to be clear that I’m not trying to disparage the work of anyone in this community. Creating new effects shots that don’t feel out of place in 275 million dollar movie is not easy. I just feel like we haven’t quite gotten there yet.
Honestly I agree with jarbear. None of the video game footage works for me at all. Also, I feel like any/all of the castle shots need more work put into them. At this point I feel like V2 should just be V1 untouched.

I think this sequence of shots works better for me, but the castle shot still needs a lot of work. The TIES look like cardboard cutouts and not 3 dimensional objects.
Sorry to be a party pooper, but with or without the dimmed windows, I’m not sure that the castle shot works for me. It just feels like it doesn’t belong in the scene.
422 HQ might be overkill depending on your source, you won’t be able to make something higher quality than what it was to start with, but you can make the files larger.
What’s your source? If it’s a 1070p BluRay, you likely don’t need more than ProRes 422 LT. If it’s a UHD-BD, you might need to go to an even larger format to handle the HDR aspects, like ProRes 4444.
I mean, you can’t gain quality but you can lose quality by recompressing, even if the file is higher bitrate than your source. I’m just trying to minimize the amount of generational loss.
I use a piece of software called Pavtube Video Converter Ultimate which I purchased years ago. Their website seems sketchy but the software actually works pretty well and can handle nearly everything. I usually convert to ProRes 422 HQ but DnxHD is also an option:
Apologies, folks, I’m just trying to understand the status of the various Rogue One projects right now. In my understanding:
- DigMod created Rise of the Rebellion a while back, with a fair few changes on too of the base film.
- HAL made one change to that for his edit (what was that?)
- The recent deepfakes have been included in v2s of both of those.
- Burbin’s and others’ recent suggestions have spawned a few new ideas, which DigMod has implemented and Hal intends to (meaning the two are still identical except for Hal’s one change?)
And Rogueleader, forgive me, I can’t remember if you’ve made your own edits, but it looks like you’ve got even more radical (but still great sounding) ideas? But I’m not clear if you’re going to implement those or if HAL/DigMod are?
It all sounds good and it feels like there’re no bad options here, I’m just struggling to follow the changes per editor right now!
Afaik the biggest differences between Rise of the Rebellion and Hal’s edit is that Rise of the Rebellion has a crawl/wipes/the removal of planet titles and Hal’s edit does not. Rise of the Rebellion also cuts some bits like the “are you serious? I’m blind!” line that Hal’s edit leaves in (thankfully because I love that line).
Can anyone post a clip of the altered shot with the blue milk from TM2YC’s edit?
Here it is. The change is very subtle. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1VYKn8bEcB_4nZjjxMzdZ7u9nmtNG0vcE/view?usp=sharing
If anyone gets to it before I do, feel free. I’m sure I can though, whenever I have the right opportunity to spend the time and aren’t up to my ears in business stuff.
Because I’m an adult with business stuff now.

Some thoughts on why the original transition might not look right for some people (and why maybe these ideas could help):
- The original is very brightly colored with sunshine, which is a giveaway for CGI in general but especially in the generally blue-green TROS. Here I’ve dulled it a bit, specifically with some blue to easier transition into the next inner-cave shot. Might clash a little with the previous shot, but maybe it could indicate some time has passed on Rey’s hike back.
- Some people mentioned it should cut instead of wipe. While that does help keep the BB-8 scene from being cut awkwardly short, I think it also helps in that you don’t see the video game plants and movie plants on two halves of the screen at the same time. You barely see the video game plants at all now, as I think they were one of the faker-looking parts.
- The original I think maybe lingered too long on the video game shot, giving your eyes too much time to process it. Now it starts just a bit later and ends a bit sooner. Ending sooner is especially important because I noticed that, in the original, you can see the very top of the ship still rendering extra bits into the game at the very end of the clip, so now you won’t see that.
Framerate on the video game part is still iffy though, especially in my even-lower-quality render. A real fix would need the best quality of whatever the source was, which I’m not sure of.
This looks a little better but still sticks out as video game footage. I also think it would be better to have no music and just ambient sound, since the surrounding shots don’t have music.
Honestly, you might be best served by just taking Hal’s edit and adding the Hayden ghost: https://ifdb.fanedit.org/star-wars-episode-vi-return-of-the-jedi-custom-special-edition/
To be honest, I like the transition on Ajan Kloss as it is. Not everything needs an establishing shot, and I don’t think adding more of them really addresses the film’s pacing problems in a meaningful way.
Honestly, I’m not so sure about the castle shot either. It still looks too obvious that it was ripped from Rogue One for me.
