The Force Awakens: Starlight (V1.1 Released!)
Time

I’ve only had a chance to check out the beginning so far, but I noticed some small visual glitches that I thought might be worth bringing up.

During the crawl, it looks like a grain layer has been applied to the entire frame, including the black letterbox bars. It noticeably lightens up the bars compared to the rest of the film, and you can see the grain pattern on them, which I found a bit distracting since they are not actually part of the filmed image. The grain also seems to get somewhat murdered by compression, even at the 30GB size. It’s more noticable if you artificially brighten the image. Here’s a comparison of your and Hal’s crawls with the brightness turned up in Photoshop to illustrate what I mean.

I also noticed compression artifacts in dark scenes seem oddly prevalent considering the filesize and I’m wondering if this has something to do with the color grading. (Again the images are artificially brightened here so it’s more obvious)

This is probably a case of the pot calling the kettle black since my edits tend to have some noticeable compression as well (especially in Episode II where I use second and third generation sources) but it seemed like you put a lot of work into this so I thought I would make sure you were aware.

The Starlight Project Part 2: The Last Jedi (WIP)
Time

Reading up on the ideas you’ve proposed in this thread and I get a sense this edit might not be for me. Imo, cutting out the Luke and Yoda scene is tantamount to cutting out the still-beating heart of the movie. That scene is like the movie’s thesis statement. I also wouldn’t want to lose the initial evacuation, as I feel it’s neccesary to set up Poe’s arc for this film and his dynamic with Leia. As it is, I feel like Rekindled and Legendary both cut a bit too much and I would be interested in an edit that focuses on restructring and refining things so that beats land even better rather than excising whole swaths of the movie.

Still interested to see what you come up with.

How’s the progress on Rey’s eyes?

Haven’t had the chance to work on them yet, since I’m still trying to figure out the Mustafar intro.

Speaking of, I realized that the light source in the pan-down is coming from the left while our other shots have the light coming from the right. Also in the pan-down, the TIEs are on the left of the screen which would imply that they enter from frame left in any subsequent shot. Keeping these things in mind, here’s my take on the opening:

I also put some lava in what looked like a river in the forest flyover.

Since we know that the RO shot is very similar in its opening to this one, I don’t think anyone should mind if the beginning of the biomes shot is cut. This way the back of the shot is emphasized, a part that wasn’t in RO.

Imo this is best version yet.

Honestly, I’m not a fan of the three-shot version. It feels less cohesive to me. The first shot looks way too dark and doesn’t match the surrounding footage. The TIES in the second shot look like 2D elements tracked on and you can see matte lines around them. Overall, the two-shot version at least transitions from lava to forest whereas the three-shot sort of jumps all over the place. There’s no sense of geography.

Not denigrating the hard work everyone put in to both versions, but that version just doesn’t work for me.

Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, Another Happy Sanding. (Released)

So I’ve more or less finished this cut, but I need some assistance. Initabsolute graciously helped me create custom credits for Episode I and II that matched the theatrical credits, but he’s no longer available to work on Episode III. Would anyone with some graphics expertise be able to help me out? I can try it out myself but I’m not sure how well I’d be able to match it to the originals.

Hi Octorox, first just want to say thank you for sharing you PT edits with. I watched this edit last night and really enjoyed so thank you once again for sharing with me.

I know it’s based off of Hal, l8tr and the phantom editors edits of TPM which is obviously a very good starting point, I have always considered Hal’s PT to be the absaloutle best of the PT edits but with your edit you removed to 2 tiny nitpicks that I have lol and that’s the Pod Race Commentator during the Pod Race and during the final battle in space Anakin’s "How about spinning, that’s fun"🤦 (Apologies if Hal did remove this but think I’m right in thinking he left that line in). Anyways I really enjoyed and now onto AOTC😬 lol.

Thanks Octorox and please take care👍.

Thanks, I appreciate it!

Revenge of the Sith - Expanded Edition (v2 Now Released!)
Time

Hey, I just downloaded V2 of this edit and, maybe it’s something on my end, but it seems like there is a serious audio sync issue with the second half of the hangar scene, after we are introduced to Grevious. I hope you have a chance to take another look at it.

EDIT: the sync in the added Palpatine office scene seems to be off too, and the third seeds of rebellion scene. The upscale on that scene also looks odd.

V2 is available and addresses much of the feedback I’ve gotten on this edit over the years. PM me for a link as always or find it in the usual places (old links should still work).

That’s good news, Octorox!
Besides addressing feedback, did you use any new sources for V2?

The deleted scenes use the newer AI upscales from Hal’s edit, and there are some other sequences that take from his latest edit as well. Other than that, no.

The Clone Wars: Refocused [COMPLETE]

The 2.0 version of The New Padawan is great. I only watched a bit of Dark Force Rising but I noticed when Obi-Wan says “Yes” in the office scene, it’s a lot softer than the other dialogue. Also your removal of the antagonism between Anakin and Obi-Wan in the hangar doesn’t quite work because they still kind of glare at each other grumpily. I wonder if it’s just better to leave more of it in, Anakin is still a padawan here after all.

I sat down to see if I could possibly get that transition to sound any better, since I agree it’s probably the worst out of the whole fan edit. The trouble is I can’t really replace the music since there is subtle foley that would be very hard to replace.

Here’s a fresh attempt at it. I think it’s fundamentally the same, though maybe a little smoother as I let the outgoing music stay strong for longer. If this feels like an improvement, I could reissue the edit with just the audio track being replaced. It is utterly beyond my means to reissue any of the prequel edits with any visual changes anymore.

Let me know what you think.

Forgive the bump but I wanted to make sure people saw this recent post since most of this thread is people asking for links, including the last couple.

It sounds good to me but I didn’t do an A/B test with the current version.
