I hate to say it but I don’t actually hear a difference compared to the first version. I think the first half of the line would have to be slowed down more to make it work. I don’t think you should give up though.
The sentence mixing is really well done. The only one that stands out to me is “He’s worth a fortune to me” specifically because of the contrast with the first half of the line. If there’s a way to smooth it out, I think it’s very close to working.
“Star Wars Story” on YouTube uses some pitch correction (or slow down?), and I don’t hear any distortion, but it’s also a YouTube video in stereo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b08O9S-tKnE
Without seeing each, I’d imagine the ‘pleasing image’ is better. DVD-locked grain sounds unappetizing, and it wouldn’t be on a negative.
Yeah I’ve decided not to bother messing with the upscaling model. Most people (including me) seem to be pretty happy with the version I already released.

I did a quick encode to clean up chroma artifacts and decimate to NTSC on the German DVD and synced it up with Hifi VHS audio from the 91 VHS release. I think I did a decent job. Of course, Stereo LaserDisc audio would be superior.Is the DVD surround sound not good?
I think it’s pretty mediocre. I just prefer the original theatrical stereo mix
I think the 5.1 sounds okay (It really doesn’t use the rear channels much at all to be honest) but if anyone can capture the Laserdisc audio I would happily add that to my version.
So, it’s come to my attention that I can use the Proteus AI model in Video Enhance AI to retain the original grain from the source rather than having to add an extra grain layer in post. For the purposes of preservation, this might be the better way to go…
EDIT: On the other hand, retaining the original grain has the side effect of retaining more sharpening and compression artifacts. The grain doesn’t look entirely natural and uniform. Since this is animation and doesn’t have a lot of fine detail that is lost with DNR, the original approach might have been the best…what matters most, authenticity to the source or a pleasing image?
I hardly think it’s analogous to a scoop of feces. Poppasketti seems to have done a fine job with it.
I think any fanedit made by someone who hates the film they are editing is destined to fail. The best fanedits are made by those who have the ability to be critical but still have at least some respect and affection for the source material, as well as regard for the filmmaker’s vision.
This is a lot nicer than what I would have said…
As a lover of this movie, I’m going to try not to come from a defensive place. It’s fine that it didn’t work for you. But the reason to “fanfix” a film is because you feel the film has potential, and that its potential can be brought out through editing. It sounds like you don’t have respect or admiration for any aspect of this movie, so you might as well save yourself the time by just not watching it.

It’s so great when the work of fan preservationists is recognized by the people putting out official releases. I just ordered the 4k Disc. I’ve only seen the extended cut of this movie so I’m excited to see it how US audiences first experienced it!
Glad you enjoyed it! As for the dirt and scratches, I think that would require some level of manual cleanup, which is beyond my time and abilities right now. If someone wants to tackle this, I can always share my ProRes file of the upscale without a grain layer applied.

The upscaling process scrubs a lot of grain so in the upscaled version I added a fine 35mm grain plate overlayed at 60% opacity. Should I go even heavier on the regraining? (Go full screen for a better look)
I have a coarser grain plate available, and/or I can increase the opacity. I’m just hesistant to add too much.

This looks like more of a broad fan edit than just an attempt to fit the book into canon though. I’d still be interested in your take.
I have the full library of sound effects from the LEGO Star Wars Force Awakens game if you need those. I don’t remember if C3PO has a lot of lines in the script, but if there are only a few, the C3PO AI voice might also be fun to use.
So I’ve decided not to make any additional cuts, but I did fix a small audio issue where a removed line could be heard faintly in the surround channels. I also removed a reference to Grievous being a “coward” since I just watched the Clone Wars microseries, and while there’s no bridging those two versions of the character, that line in particular bugged me. I’m exporting the new version right now and should have it available soon in the usual channels.

Also, season 1 does not line up with the DVD so it’s a different master.
So the Disney+ version maxes out at 720P? Has anyone been able to confirm whether or not it’s an upscale?

A very good episode. I was almost giddy seeing the Hutts. The CGI has come along enough and it not being Jabba helps immensely. I still don’t like the lame minor characters who try to be funny, like at the mayor’s office, but more concerning Max Rebo’s trunk is too thin, isn’t it?
I am amazed that with the money and tech that Lucasfilm/Disney has at its disposal that so many of the casually seen aliens look like borderline rubber masks.
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets had more convincing looking aliens!
I feel like it’s probably an intentional choice. They’re trying to emulate the look of the rubber masks used in A New Hope.
Just wanted to let everyone know I’m going to attempt a preservation of this movie, which I have fond memories of from childhood. I just purchased the UK DVD off Amazon UK (spent too much but what are you going to do). I’m going to attempt to sync it to the US DVD 5.1 audio and then upscale to 1080p using Topaz VEAI.
I noticed the US DVD is 29.97 fps so there must be some kind of pulldown going on. To sync to the PAL video to the audio, does anyone know if I should aim for 23.976 fps or 24 on the dot?
Non-Linear Editor. Basically any editing software that you use on a computer is an NLE.

I’ll reconsider my list of changes, but I really do wish to remain distinct from Starlight and avoid bending too much in its direction, even to include stuff I like. It’s there to be viewed in its own right, after all. One thing that may not be obvious unless you’re thinking about going about editing is that Starlight is sort of a gordian knot and some things about it I like only work alongside more extensive changes.
I don’t plan to use the dice scene or Falcon deleted scene, as much as I enjoy them, for instance. Not wanting a huge revamp, just that there’s a few things Starlight presents that enhance TFA:R’s existing goals.
Sounds like I may have to make my own edit that splits the difference between TFA:R and Starlight then 😛
Btw, I recently watched Restructured with a friend. She mostly loved it, but she felt the scene where Snoke orders Hux to fire the laser again at the Resistance Base was abrupt and drew attention to the fact that it was a fan edit. I’m wondering if that scene is ultimately even necessary?
I wouldn’t add the whispers when Rey shoots the Stormtroopers, or remove the reference to the Death Star (I kind of like that bit of lampshading, even if it is a bit too cute by half.)
Personally I also don’t think the thumbs up moment lands as well without BB8 divulging the base location but I could go either way on that.
Otherwise I agree with everything on your list.
