I'm thinking lawsuit...
Time
Windexed, great point and somewhat along the path I was alluding too. Pagz, you need to calm down a bit. I was simply referring to reality not emotion. I have a very emtional piece of the "that feeling" thread and I am hardly Pro-Lucas. I am just begging what is rational. In the first month of star wars there were 3 version the lost cut, star warsre-new hope, and then the new hope... So from the beginning, in 1977 there were changes and he has always stated wanting to have these films evolve to his vision...which according to him, will be the archival editions, hence the name. Please don't unleash anger at us, for staing why its just not plausible. Now certainly it not good business practice and is a harsh denial to the most hardcore fans (the reason for the site and why we're here)...in that regard we all agree (except Jimbo maybe). We all feel your pain about the OT. There will be awesome edits after the box set is released and there are the anamorphic and tr47 sets. He will not release them probably ever, may be a remote chance on the archival editions where there is huge amounts of room on each disc, where he'd include as an extra (easter egg maybe...haha).

Episode I-VI: Archival Editions
Time
OK, some of it may be wishes, but again I have seen much information to back many of these. In episode three they have gone back to films scenes to put in the original trilogy and that I read at dark horizons and aintitcool. Scenes with Padme, hayden, using Boba's voice, etc. There was an older list that is slightly different that is from october, this is update with rumors, but substantiated ones. Luca$ himself talked to MTV about going back and filming those new scenes and it was only a couple of months ago...so please...relax..everyone...this is interesting to look at. That's it. RELAX. Damn.

These movies will neither be original editions or the special editions. The special editions were strictly the 1997 theatrical release. Since he has changed many things. The new DVDs he does change the Greedo/han scene apparently as well as other things, there has been more tinkering. As a matter of what originals are we referring to. George Luca$ changed Star Wars from the original edit (30-40% different footage then we've seen - see my "lost footage thread"), then upon release of star wars (3 weeks later), he changed some scenes, dialogue, opening scrawl and title to A New Hope. How about the Imax editions, DVD editions, theatrical editions, UK editions of the new movies...all different. For better or worse (I think worse read my "that feeling" thread)...they continue to evolve. I have listed on the SE vs. OT forum a list of all the changes to the Archival Editions that will be released in High-Def in May 2007. It continues to evolve. So in fact, Luca$ could clearly make the argument that 1. It is not false advertisement as these are not the SE 2. This was his original vision (that too has evolved some) that he is now able to realize with the modern technology. 3. He has old scripts and notes to bakc up most of that 4. He is Luca$ the $$$ man, try and sue him. I am not defending him by any means, but a lawsuit is silly.

Episode I-VI: Archival Editions
Time
Apparently the May 2007 release of the "full" or "ultimate" editions have been referred to by the Luca$ camp as the "archival editions", not "ultimate editions". They will be released in High Definition marking the 30th Anniversary of the Original. I have read of many changes. Han will shoot first, but the original actor playing darth/anakin unmasked will be changed as will his ghost in VI. What's more in the filming of Ep III there are scenes being done for Portman that will have her edited in for ROTJ. He keep's tinkering...according to rumors this is a list of changes. Not all of them will make it and this is again according to rumors from trukstop.com...

CHANGES TO THE ORIGINAL TRILOGY
Episode IV: A New Hope
01. The Imperial March has been added to Darth Vader's first appearance on Princess Leia's ship.
02. When Obi-Wan is talking to Luke about his father Anakin's Theme plays in the background and then it turns into the Imperial March as he talks about Vader.
03. The lightsaber effects have been redone and the frame jumps of lightsabers being turned on has been removed.
04. There's a new scene which has been shot during the filming of Episode III in which the Emperor dissolves the Senate.
05. In the Cantina, the Duros(green aliens guys) have been replaced with Neimoidians and some aliens from the prequels have been added.
06. The bleeding arm on the floor in the Cantina has been replaced with a non-bleeding arm because it's now canon that lightsabers cauterize wounds.
07. The original shooting scene between Han and Greedo has been restored.
08. Jabba the Hutt has been given a makeover and Han no longer steps on his tail.
09. In place of R2 wobbling down the stairs to the Falcon's hangar, a CG R2 navigating the stairs like he does in Attack of the Clones was added.
10. The white boxes around space ships have been removed and new CG shots have been added.
11. The scene of the Falcon being chased by the two Star Destroyers was modified. The Falcon now does spinning moves, avoiding the Star Destroyers' fire.
12. When the Death Star destroys Alderaan there's a new scene of Yoda's reaction to the disturbance in the Force that is created by all those deaths and then it cuts to Obi-Wan reacting to it as well.
13. The Dianoga has gotten a CG makeover and were are now able to see more of the creature.
14. The Death Star's paneling and computers have been slightly altered to show similar displays to those in the prequels.
15. The words "Tractor Beam" with Aurebesh lettering.
16. More stormtroopers have been added to the Death Star.
17. Temuera Morrison's voice is being recorded for use with all the stormtroopers.
18. The Obi-Wan/Vader duel has been spruced up. It is much more epic and there is much more movement. A modified version of Duel of the Fates is being considered for the scene.
19. The Death Star plans that are taken from R2 have been updated. When the Rebels are reviewing the Death Star plans they look similar to the plans we see in Attack of the Clones.
20. The Death Star battle is much more epic with more Tie Fighters and more Rebels being blown to bits. We get to see old Naboo starfighters being used by the Rebels.
21. There's a new scene(shot during Episode III) where Darth Vader goes to Coruscant and lands his ship in the same building Count Dooku does at the end of Attack of the Clones. Except now the building is all fixed up and it is now Palpatine's palace. He meets with Palpatine to ask for forgiveness for his failure and inform him of a new potential who is strong in the Force.
22. Chewbacca now gets a medal.

Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
01. The taun-tauns are now CG.
02. The battle of Hoth is much more epic. We see the Imperial ships land on Hoth and release AT-ATs. The AT-ATs have been sped up a bit. There's a ground battle between the Rebel soldiers and stormtroopers featuring new ships and vehicles.
03. Temuera Morrison's voice is being recorded for the older Boba Fett and all the stormtroopers.
04. The white boxes around space ships have been removed.
05. The slug monster is CG.
06. Ian McDiarmid has refilmed scenes as the Emperor. The conversations between Vader and Palpatine is now longer and features a few connections to the prequels.
07. Yoda's face is now animated in CG allowing more _expression of emotions yet his movements remain the same. Also two deleted scenes featuring Yoda instructing Luke have been restored.
08. A new scene was shot in which the stormtroopers, after they capture Han, Leia and Chewie, bring Vader the box containing C-3PO in pieces. Vader orders the stormtroopers to bring the broken droid to Chewbacca's cell so that he can fix him.
09. The lightsaber effects have been redone in certain parts.
10. Luke's fall from Cloud City has been reshot against bluescreen using a stuntman.

Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
01. Jabba the Hutt is now a combination of the puppet and CG.
02. The Rancor is CG and looks disgusting as ever.
03. Yoda is CG. Yoda disappears leaving his clothes behind like Obi-Wan now.
04. The ewoks are now mostly CG and there are a lot more of them.
05. The plan is to insert the love theme Across the Stars when Luke is talking with Leia about their mother.
06. Temuera Morrison's like before is now the voice for Boba Fett and all the stormtroopers.
07. In the battle of Endor there are thousands of Ewoks and they are more vicious than there midgets-in-suits counterparts. More bite the dust now.
08. White boxes around ships removed.
09. The black blotches around Palpatine's face are gone.
10. Some of the lightsaber effects have been redone. The shadows that the lightsabers made on the floor are gone.
11. During Anakin's death scene it starts with a sad rendition of the Imperial March and slowly evolves into Anakin's Theme.
12. Sebastion Shaw who played Anakin when he was unmasked has been replaced with Hayden Christenson in make-up to make him look older. Anakin has much more dialogue. He apologizes for the destruction he caused, he thanks his son for turning him back to the light, he tells his son to rebuild the Jedi and he says he loves him and his sister. Just before he dies he says, "It is finished...".
13. We see more planets celebrating at the end of the movie. We see an aged Jar Jar, who is now the leader of the Gungans, on Naboo celebrating with the people of Naboo and the Gungans. We see an old Watto, who is now unable to fly, sitting in a hover chair cheering on Tatooine. During these scenes Across the Stars plays transitioning to the victory celebration music at the Ewok tree village.
14. Anakin's spirit is now played by Hayden Christenson with make-up to make him look his age. He looks on proudly at his son Luke with the spirit of Padme by his side.

That Star Wars Feeling - that brought me here...
Time
Hot Rod I like how you mentioned your friends dogging you. That is a true fan to stay with it. I don't hate the new movies, its just hard to swallow next to the OT. TPM was truly disappointing, but had some glimpse of hope (hmmm...a new hope) when I found this edit, it may give me mostly what I was looking for...something that doesn't look and move like Shrek 2. ATOC is a good movie, I just expect more...as someone said...with that much money, resources (nearly billions), time (over 16 years), and fan base and intelligent writers that have been doing all these books&games...I expected more. I really expected more, like the sequels of the Matrix. They were good, but somewhat disappointing. But the LOTR trilogy was awesome the whole way through. I am not begging for re-edits of that. Peter Jackson did a Phenomenal job with the Extended editions...hopefully "the hobbit" comes out well too when he does that.

This is one of the most viewed and debated things at TF.net, guess its not that interesting here. I have been somewhat disappointed (hugely with TPM, and some with ATOC) with the new movies thus far. That said I curious how they are going to bridge the movies we got now to the trilogy we had then. Apparently, the jedi Council over at TF.net has taken great interest in this guys writing. Maybe he can save the new movie and breath life into it.

What if... CGI hadn't been that fully developed when TPM was made?

That's like saying you're glad because you didn't grow up in the 70's when the Rolling Stones were doing "Paint it Black", "Brown Sugar" and slew of classics. Or Aerosmith's "Dream On". Yes those bands are still recording and some of them are decent songs. But times have changed, music has changed, and they have changed and its not the same. Rock was breathing through the country and was a vehicle for political and socially turbulent times. Hip-hop dominates now along with pre-packaged pop, choreographed dance steps, and lots of bling-bling. Star Wars had a deeper meaning then one you'll never fully grasp if you didn't live in that era. It wasn't a high-grossing moive like phantom or spiderman...it wasn't just big among fanboys...it was big among ALL boys and the country embraced it. Sorry, you don't get why grown men still want those action figures. Irrational maybe, but it was one of the best things of our childhood like "mother's little helper" or "back in the saddle". If you don't know those songs I am sure Nelly and britney will do a pop remake soon.

Well to quote the author:

Please note: the following is a FAN NOVEL of Episode III pieced together from SPOILER REPORTS, rumors, OFFICIAL info from the OS, and some of my own speculation. Some things in this may have been proven to be inaccurate by recently released info from the OS. This happened because that information was not known when I wrote some of this. So, please, try to overlook these small inconsistencies and enjoy this for what it is--a fan's interpretation of what we "know" about Episode III thus far. Thanks and enjoy!

This is a big deal at the force.net and is a really good read...thought some of you might like it

Lucas Even Screws Up Jabba's Character
Time
Erich, good post. Everyone doesn't have to agree with it. I saw Farenheit 9/11 and I don't agree with all of it, but it was interesting to hear an opposing viewpoint. Isn't that the point of message boards and further, living in a free country. Opposing viewpoints can be heard and among intelligent minds considered. Simple and sweeping bashing like that of Jimbo only hurts the contributions of members, especially new ones. And to another new member Buddy-x-wing, I have to say awesome post. That is so true about prequals. They have so much story to fill and points to cover it loses magic and much character development and plot suffers. Again great post, mentioning Campbell's mythos that GL so heavily relied upon to give his movies "soul" or "force" if you will. Jimbo, again, GL is not faultless, the movies are not faultless and you certainly are not faultless. Leave people alone that come with new ideas and post them intelligently.

Lost Original Trilogy footage... at blueharvest.net
Time
OMG, Sammy... I posted thos links above and thought they were cool wondering about those cut scenes, but I never saw what you posted on that lost site... the quote follows:

About The Lost Cut:
This was the first edit of Star Wars, edited not by George Lucas but by John Jympson.
This version of Star Wars, according to an article in Star Wars Insider #41 by David West Reynolds, contains about 30-40% different footage from the final version. There are scenes that have never been seen elsewhere as well as alternate takes of scenes we know from the finished version.

Umm, that would be the greatest find of all time to see that...

Magnoliafan...are you out there for this one?

We all want the Original New Hope and some want the Original Pre-New Hope (when it was just star wars in the scrawl and had a couple different scenes), but this, this is clearly a version I would love to see. Anyone else would release this in a box set, with so much fanfare. We'll never see it though...because it is not Luca$' "vision". It is someone else's and God forbid it was better. We all know that when someone else wrote the story (read: ESB) it was better. I wonder about this cut. Certainly, don't question my love for the original, but sheer curiousity as well as listening to Luca$ logic on deleting scenes in ATOC...makes me wonder.

That Star Wars Feeling - that brought me here...
Time
Luke, windexed, han's girlfriend,warbler...it's good to hear my thoughts are not alone in this universe. Sometimes I feel like Luke, all alone with the love I have for those movies. Or worse there are so many that have love for those movies, but blindly, accepting anything Luca$. He has lost his way somewhat and has become misguided and full of self-importance. Again, Its not his anymore, it's ours. He made the movies, we made it breathe, we made it great we made it a phenomenon never to be surpassed. His new vision is more effects and grandeur. Again, I am so glad that there are some that see being critical can come from deep love and real hurt for destroying something so, so precious.

What if... CGI hadn't been that fully developed when TPM was made?
Time
Like I said in my "that feeling" thread...I do feel TPM was too cartoony and I think Luke is on the money. Luca$ is obsessed with the graphics and sound and no doubt that makes a good movie more awesome. But lets be honest, which matrix was better the first or the third big budget, better technology Matrix revolutions. Without a doubt the first. The characters are important. And yet...he ignores their improtance. Case in Point...watch ATOC DVD and go through the Deleted scenes, play all with commentary. Its disgusting. Rick and George repeatedly say," well this scene really adds a lot to the characters and explains their motivations." And yet they say it slowed it down so we got rid of it. I am thinking umm, that explains why chooses to serve (with her packing in the room and her trying to save that dying planet), that explains her fear for what's to come (when she addresses the senate), that explains her longing for a fmaily and how close she is to hers (the dinner scene), that explains how they got tried and sentenced to death (trial scene)...I am thinking, WTF, Luc-Ass. If each scene gives so much to the character why get rid of them (8 minutes going to kill the movie? Why not cut the stupid scene where the kid tells him the planet was deleted? DuHHHH! Did any not see that coming? Why not cut out that Watto scene? But they say over and over that plot and characters SLOW the movie down...that's a shame. We all lose, but OOOH and AHHHH look at all the colorful graphics and listen to the great sound. Do I sound bitter? Well read my "that feeling thread", I am.

That Star Wars Feeling - that brought me here...
Time

I am sure I can post this and you’ll understand…the magic of “Star Wars”. It defined my generation and no, its not comparable Harry Potter, Matrix or even Lord of the Rings. It was Sci-Fi which was the lure, but it was characters. It was incomprehensible and incomparable to anything ever before or even since. And we KNEW it. That John Williams score and that crawl together still gives me chills. The figures, well it seemed I had them all (though not anymore). I lived it, breathed it.

Funny memories: I remember bludgeoning my brothers with the now banned hard plastic, non-collapsable, glow-in-the-dark light sabers of course in a dark room. Beating each other senseless. Making vader noises. It captivated us. It moved us. And at times hurt us (hey, it was hard plastic).

There was good and evil in a clear way, not the convoluted mess of most movies today (though LOTR does this well). It was emotions and humanity. The relationships between the characters transcended the sci-fi setting. They had life, they weren’t stoic (Qui-Gon or Obi-Wan) like the new mess or overly cartoony and obnoxious(Jar-Jar or Watto). I am saying all this because I have seen the originals over a 100 times a piece.

And growing up I heard the rumors of a trilogy to come before the IV-VI episodes and then a VII-IX trilogy, but years ticked by, the cast got older, I got older, and I put it aside as fantasy. Then I heard a rumor, and another of a new trilogy. The Phantom Menace is coming, people camping out for weeks. This is it. I sat in that seat, again hearing that score, seeing that scrawl with chills…16 YEARS, I’ve waited and its real. Then Jar-Jar, kiddie anakin, jar-jar, stoic emotionless characters, cartoony scenes (was it me or did the technology from 1977 using the models look more realistic), the big fish scooby-doo scene, a whole race of Jar-Jar’s…OK the pod-race cool, good, the darth maul scenes, awesome, ok its getting better, ummm…wait, did he just die? Uh, Jar-Jar lives and Darth Maul dies (ok, lucas realising the cult status of boba fett after killing him, does jango…hmm, duh, maul was that type of cool). I was crushed. I stayed in denial and in fact never went back to see it in the theater again. I saw it on DVD and saw the AOTC several times (a vast improvement), but I stayed in denial.

The movies that were given to us were decent, but in my mind I had to divorce them from the ones I love so I didn’t get sick inside. Because if they were Star Wars, my expectations were too high, my love too great. I’d forgive any, but Lucas. 16 years to prepare, 16 years to get it right, 16 years to work a real script with a monsterous fan base willing to contribute. And we got “jar-jar cartoons”. I’ve put it all out of my mind over the last few years.

The more I heard about Lucas releasing one movie at a time of the original when he released all his others I thought. Screw this guy, how much money do you need (although now there is a box set coming out of the SE’s). It’s sickening. Then I heard about edits. The movies being edited, to how they should’ve been. I did some searches and came upon this site (Yes I love the OT as well another thing Lucas messed up dearly). I got giddy again. People that love the original. People like Rikter and Magnoliafan that love the mythos so much that they collect, remaster, edit and improve. Giving the fans what they wanted all along (isn’t that the point and further, why couldn’t he realize this - now it’s bigger than him and $$$).

Just thought I’d share a love hate story and what brought me here. I love the posts. I love the forward-minded thinking. I love the dreaming of what if here. And I love that no one here blindly praises all that is Luca$. Star wars is mine and yours, not his, he just created it. That’s my story. And I’ll still get chills from that score and that crawl…no matter what.
