The Rise of Skywalker: Ascendant (Released)

EDIT:

Finally, it is absolutely a storytelling beat to tie her abilities visually to Palpatine’s abilities as they have been seen so far in the film.

The only thing is, Ascendant removed Palpy’s hands flickering when he raises the fleet. So it would be less a direct reference to Palps, and more a generic allusion to the Dark Side.

Huh. Was the reasoning to lessen the implication that Palps was raising an entire fleet through Force magic?

That’s my read too, Sherlock. Rey is totally caught up in her anger, reacting blindly. It’s too much to throw actual lightning around, but a few stray bits on her hand would be totally in character for her at this point in the story and lead organically from her destruction of the transport. There’s actually a lot of emphasis on her hand in this scene, as she shakes it as if it’s paining her, grabbing Kylo’s saber with it to deal the injurious blow, and using it to heal him when she finally realizes how close she was to the darkness. The scene even ends with dialogue about her taking Ben’s hand! It’s actually stranger that there’s no reference to Force lightning in this scene, given how important it was earlier.

Finally, it is absolutely a storytelling beat to tie her abilities visually to Palpatine’s abilities as they have been seen so far in the film.

Thinking about it, there really isn’t anyone in charge of the galaxy at all in the Sequel trilogy, or at least nobody we know about from the films. The Senate is destroyed halfway through the first one without ever learning who led that body, and Snoke is killed a day or two later in TLJ without completing his conquest of the galaxy. Kylo is the de-facto leader after that, but he never really appears to lead the galaxy and is apparently looking for the real power behind Snoke this whole time. Then Palpatine emerges and becomes the de-facto leader of the galaxy using the shadow power structure of Pryde et al who really control the First Order. Then Palpatine dies a few hours after that along with Pryde, Kylo, and Leia. With the original leadership of the galaxy dead and the leaders of the Resistance and First/Final Orders dead, I guess the galaxy exists in a state of anarchy until the next warlord comes along with a salvaged planet-killing Star Destroyer.

No worries, I’m sure there will be more work done on these shots before being finalized. Honestly the biggest part is getting in the headspace for devoting the hours to work on it, as the Snowtrooper shot has taken less than a dozen hours despite being by far the most complicated in the scene and the next shot only uses the content aware filter at the moment.

In defense of Rey Palpatine in The Rise of Skywalker, and why I do not think it undermines her arc in The Last Jedi.

There is no version of the story in which Rey’s parents being the progeny of Palpatine are ‘nobody’. At the very least they have a claim to the remnants of the Empire, regardless of what Force power they do or do not have. Rey being the grandchild of Palpatine absolutely gives her a place in the story; it is literally a noble birth.

Rey throughout the trilogy is desperately searching for someone to validate her abilities and place in the story, and TLJ does the thematically necessary step of ripping that away from her. TROS gives it back on a silver platter.

I’ve just been made aware of the new Star Wars: Biomes and Star Wars Vehicle walkthroughs footage, and there’s some really nice stuff there for fanedits. Specifically, the closeups on the Falcon’s cockpit controls would probably work well with Kylo’s Falcon scene as he reminisces on his past.

Similarly, there’s a good shot or few of the interior of a FO Star Destroyer, in particular a slow zoom in on a door which could be used to make a better transition to Kylo’s prayer.

Personally, I’ve had good luck using Handbrake to detelecine the DVD rips to 720x480 square-pixel lossless CFR 23.97fps h264 mp4s, and then running Topaz VEAI’s Dione Interlaced Robust V3 on them. The great thing about this model is that it keeps the majority of the detail while making things a little cleaner and sharper. It never massively blurs any areas of the image, like Artemis has a tendency to do, nor does it have the lengthy processing time of Gaia. It also sorts out the occasional interlacing artifacts left in my detelecined rips (which are usually the result of post-process screen shake). Other models tend to exaggerate them instead. The only big downside is that the sharpening causes the image to lose a little of its perceived depth - but that’s not so noticeable in motion, at TV-distance.

Here’s images of the Defiant, the Station, the Replimat, and the Sisko.

Those are impressive comparisons, the only obvious issue I see is the background of the Replimat has some lights with oversharpening artifacts, but if that’s the biggest problem it’s a damn fine one to have.

I feel like what has happened with the NuEU is analogous to the Special Editions replacing the Original films. Sure, the new versions of the films may play nicer with the prequels occasionally, but it feels like replacing a part of history.

Gone are the multitude of perspectives on the nature of the Clone Wars and the Old Republic, the nature of the Jedi of old, the nature of the Force and the surreal explorations of long-lost technology. In its place is an anodyne catholic dogma written by writers often too shackled to the multitudinous rules of the established canon to really imagine or create. There are still good stories in the NuEU such as Leia: Princess of Alderaan, but I fear more stories like Queen’s Shadow or Queen’s Peril, meandering travelogues constrained to the point of irrelevance. Perhaps the High Republic Era will bear fruit, but even so the Wild West of Star Wars is gone.

Yep, though the other changes will be more technical and take more effort to achieve.

On a related note, I’ve been considering what to release as far as versions of the project, and I’m pretty sure there should be two versions: The first containing the original ending for people who want continuity between this film and the sequels, and the second incorporating the ‘Luke Vision’ ending. In addition, since the second version would be the more complicated one, it makes sense to reincorporate the delayed Starkiller firing sequence from act 3 that has been practically completed but abandoned in lieu of a more Restructured change. That way all of the major changes can be viewed in either version 1 or version 2.

This also means that the pared down V1 could be completed as quickly as it takes to remove the timecode of the Kylo Falcon scene and add the Sith Eyes to Rey.

Lightsaber Appearances per Star Wars Movie

I made the graph based on this article plus some manual calculations for the sequel trilogy, using just scenes where a saber was active. I don’t have any idea about TROS though, if anyone would like to contribute a count for that one it would be most appreciated. 😃

Incidentally, the graph inversely correlates with my opinion of the films. A lightsaber percentage of 4 indicates a classic, 5 is acceptable, 6 is perhaps salvageable via fanedit, and anything above that is unsalvageable.
