The Tie Fighter Sound

Lots of things got away with reusing Star Wars sounds. Nearly every episode of the original Transformers cartoon has one Star Wars sound or another IIRC.

This was years before Star Wars. Lost In Space came out in 1965. You may notice from the show’s footage that it’s black and white. So it’s the other way around. Kind of like the Wilhelm scream.

The Tie Fighter Sound
Time

So I’ve been wondering this ever since I was a kid. When I was a kid we used to get the old Lost In Space episodes every month from Columbia House on VHS (along with Gilligan’s Island and Star Trek TNG). We came across the episode The Keeper, a two-parter. In part 2 there’s a giant alien spider with a shrill howl. Later I watched Star Wars for the first time and instantly recognized the sound from the Tie Fighters. Is it indeed the same sound or is it not?

Here’s the episode. The sound effect is clearly audible at 42:17. (you’ll have to play it at 1.5x the speed)

I am reminded of a frequent point they used to make on the Cracked Podcast about suspension of disbelief. In The Dark Knight Rises, there’s a chase scene where Batman goes into a tunnel in broad daylight and exits at night. This is absolutely a textbook hole in the movie, but when the movie came out almost everyone didn’t notice it until it was pointed out to them. The Cracked folks considered this a mark of effective movie-making rather than an egregious mistake, because audiences were swept up in the movie enough not to notice that flaw in the logic. That’s how I felt about all of these nitpicks about the in-universe rules of space travel in TLJ. I was engaged enough in the story that was in front of me that I was not giving any thought at all to whether or not it was 100% consistent with the last eight films (which, it’s worth noting, are not entirely consistent with each other either). I get that that’s not enough for everyone, but it’s enough for me.

Exactly. A perfect example is the T Rex cage in Jurassic park going from level with the road to a pit. But no one notices or cares, because it works. Well no one used to care, until this current CinemaSins-esque nitpick circle jerk “movie criticism” culture said that all “plot holes” are bad and lazy filmmaking. So apparently Steven fucking Spielberg is a lazy filmmaker.

Holy cow I never noticed that!! I just watched it with my kids last week too. Crazy what gets by you!

Edit: Nevermind, it looks like the Amazon Video versions are only available in the USA and I live in Canada.

Have you tried Google?

It’s $114.99!

In Canada, maybe. Says $99.99 for me.

Yes, that’s what we’re talking about. Canada. He’s in Canada. Like me.

The Bluray pack for all 6 movies blue 3 bonus discs are $75 at Walmart!

Sure. Or cheaper on eBay, maybe. He just seemed interested in getting it digitally.

Well, yeah if he’s specifically interested in digital. I took it to mean that it might be cheaper than buying physical (which it isn’t). Apologies if I misunderstood.

And I doubt you get all those extra bonus features from Google Play.

I suppose so. In my opinion though, the bluray featurettes are decent but there’s a whole lot of meh as far as behind the scenes stuff. I guess I’m just spoiled by the fan-made content like Jamie Benning’s OT filmumentaries.

That’s true of course, but still. Getting all 6 movies for a significantly cheaper price PLUS all that bonus content is still a much better deal.

It’s $114.99! And that’s the bundle price for all six movies (the individual prices are $22.99 each which adds up to $140)! The Bluray pack for all 6 movies blue 3 bonus discs are $75 at Walmart! And I doubt you get all those extra bonus features from Google Play.

You’ll have to buy the collection like I did (I’m also in Canada). Luckily, the Saga Bluray collection went on a massive sale recently. They used to be $110 and now they’re $75 (or they were when I bought mine). It didn’t seem like a one-time sale, though. It seemed like a permanent price drop. Maybe they’re trying to get rid of them…ebay is a good spot too.

if you join the disney movie club, the trilogy is only 26 dollars. Or 11.97 each for steelbooks of each movie…

In Canada? I just checked out the available Disney movies on that page and there’s not a single Star Wars movie available. Just Rebels Season 3.

Star Wars vs. A New Hope - Which do you say and why?
Time

I kind of relate this issue to Star Trek. The original show was just called Star Trek, however when someone mentions “Star Trek” EVERYONE asks which one they’re talking about. That’s why it was given the name “The Original Series”. Which is a terrible name on its own and it would obviously never have been called that when it first came out, but it helps immensely when you need to be specific. That’s why I’m always referring to “Star Wars Episode 4” as ANH.

I cannot STAND soft subtitles. But it’s your decision obviously on which you want to use. But consider this, TFA has burned-in subtitles not soft subtitles. So it IS something an official Bluray would do, is it not?

I think an official blu-ray may or may not have burnt in subtitles. But they wouldn’t have the gate weave, slight blurring, etc.

TFA’s seem slightly blurry. In fact they resemble the OT burned in subs pretty closely. Font, blur and all.

Yeah, DVD soft subtitles were crap, but Blu-rays can look pretty good if anyone bothers to make them look that way. Not theatrical, but good. Blur is very doable, but gate weave, grain, dirt, and any sort of temporal appearance change would not.

Like I said earlier, TFA’s subs are not soft they’re burned in. And better looking or not, I dislike soft subs immensely for ripping reasons.

I was doing some reading and found this…
“AVCHD is formatted for burning onto a Blu-ray Disk (BD) or even a dual-layer DVD (DVD-DL). This version usually downloads as a .ISO file (often with a .MDS file included). Not all soundtracks and subtitles are included in this version due to BD limitations. See this article to learn how to “mount” the .ISO file on Windows, Mac, or Linux.”

I’d like the MKV with all the features and audio, but if you convert this to AVCHD, it won’t lose the additional commentaries and stuff like that ? No loss of quality ?

AVCHD is a Blu-Ray burned to a DVD9, more or less. Converting the MKV to an 8GB AVCHD will lose quality. Just convert it to a BD25 and burn it to a single-layer Blu-Ray, then you won’t lose quality. Otherwise just download the AVCHD version and burn that to a dual-layer DVD (though it will only play in a Blu-Ray player).

Some DVD players can play AVCHD DVD9 discs can’t they? Probably not many if any, granted.
