Idea & Info Wanted: GOUT improved versions?
Time

I'm pretty sure that ANH & ESB PAL GOUT are just upscaled from the NTSC master but ROTJ PAL has more detail than the NTSC and looks to be from a PAL master. There was a thread with some comparisons between the PAL & NTSC GOUT versions which showed this but i can't remember which one it was

I carried out a comparison of the PAL and NTSC version of ANH, and the difference in quality was negligible. The DVDs clearly use the same master as that used for the DC laserdisc - same dirt spots and so on. Thread discussing it is here.

However, this is the first I've heard of a difference in the PAL & NTSC versions of ROTJ.

Can the Sweetspot/PDI Deluxe capture Y/B-Y/R-Y?
Time

What is that is outputting the component video? I would be willing to bet that the connectors are mislabeled and it's actually normal component video Y/Pb/Pr that is being output.

Can't you just hook it up to a TV to see if you get a picture?

And, strictly, there is no such thing as PAL/NTSC in the component domain (576i/480i would be the correct nomenclature).

If you start with a player that has the digital out-does it still need a demodulator to get the 5.1?

 Yes.

"Digital out" on a laserdisc players outputs the disc's digital track, which is 2 channel 44.1kHz PCM. You can capture this digitally without a demodulator - but it won't be 5.1.

AC3 audio is stored in modulated form on the LD analogue track, so on a LD player the AC3 out is a different connection to the digital out.

Lord of the Rings Theatrical Blu Ray Trilogy ruined By DVNR.

Bill Hunt on the 2004 Star Wars DVDs:

The color palette here is more lush and accurate than ever before. You're going to be blown away by everything from subtle flesh tones to the vibrant gold plating on C-3PO's chest to the bright orange flightsuits of the Rebel pilots. Contrast is also spectacular, with deep detailed blacks and clear, accurate whites.

Hmm...
