The Evil Dead Treasures Collection (Released)
Time

*bump*

So, the new BD release of The Evil Dead apparently gives the viewer the option to watch in 1.85:1 or original 1.33:1 aspect ratio. Has anyone got around to comparing the Blu-ray with the Japanese laserdisc? How does the colour grading and cropping compare? Does it have Raimi's 90s changes restored (the wide shot of Cheryl's turn and the lightning strike)? And does it include the original theatrical mono soundtrack?

Multiple capture averaging will only help reduce the analogue noise that is introduced in your player, interconnects and capture device. I was disappointed when I tried it on a laserdsic capture, because only a small amount of noise was removed. In that case, it turned out that most of the visible noise was actually present on the LD master (so the noise pattern was the same in every capture). I'd be interested to see your results.

The screen caps seem to be cutting off from the post for some reason but the ratio is bigger then it appears. And btw, it's 1:85:1. not 2:35:1

The images are too big for the forum. Better to post a thumbnail with a link to the full size. (BTW why did you resize them to 800 x 611?)

I see what you mean about needing colour correction - the title screen is very yellow compared to a shot I found with Google:

I once read an article in a UK home cinema magazine about the "best bits" of the Star Wars soundtracks - based on the Dolby Surround audio mixes from the PAL SE laserdiscs. I'm sure I still have it stashed away somewhere, I'll have to dig it out and share it.

Star Wars 1977 70mm sound mix recreation [stereo and 5.1 versions now available] (Released)

So adywan's ESB recreation is completely gout-synched?  Awesome.  I haven't had a chance to see his version yet (sacrilege, I know!), but I'll have to do that soon.  If this mix will fit to it that would make it even better for me.

I remember reading that his version is GOUT-synched -  although it may require a different initial delay, this shouldn't present a problem.

He mainly used the SE 5.1, which sounds quite good for the most part and has the advantage of discrete channels, but I don't like the way they mixed the surrounds (flashy and too loud).

Ady said he used surround channels from the 2004 audio in his 5.1 mix. I know that there are a couple of music dropouts reported, but I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the overall dynamics of Ady's mix when you get a chance to hear it.

2 Avisynth questions?

Can I use avisynth to remove\delete unwanted single frames throughout a video, and how is this done.

DeleteFrame()?

Wait, now I'm confused, you need to use double plus signs?  I've always used a single one.  Is there a difference in what that does?

+ is a shortcut for UnalignedSplice(), ++ is AlignedSplice(). The difference is in the way the audio is handled.

Sounds Of Star Wars Book

Brilliant sound designer though...

Yes, it's a shame that Burtt get remembered for screwing up the sound mix on the 2004 DVDs, instead of his inspired, and sometimes iconic, sound effects:

  • the hum of the lightsabre, created by holding a microphone next to an old projector
  • the noise of the TIE fighter engine, created by combining the roar of a charging elephant with tyre noise from a car on a wet road
  • AT AT laser blasts, the sound of a mast cable stay being struck
  • the droid army tanks in TPM, sound of an electric shaver in a metal mixing bowl

(these are just from memory - I haven't read the book, but you get the idea)

Question on the 1977 70mm Soundtrack Recording

I guess the 06 DVD of Star Wars is closer to it's original form than I thought...

The sound mix on the 2006 DVD is the 1993 remix from the Definitive Collection laserdisc release. It is based on the 70mm 6-track mix, although there are several additions.

See http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/70mm-mix-to-93-mix-comparison/topic/6501/

The DVL-90 has these features for video/ audio,

Full Output Complement:
Gold Plated AC-3 Bit Stream / PCM Optical Output

A gold-plated optical output? Why?

If I were to use the composite (yellow, red, white) connection, can anyone tell me if this machine keeps or rearranges the signal inside which might cause a loss of quality?  I'm not even sure if I'm describing this properly so please go easy on me.  I am trying to decide which connection would be better on this machine as I'm sure there are better ones out there.

Composite video is the yellow RCA. Red and white are audio. I don't know for definite, but I believe that this player's composite video output is a recombined s-video. My original advice still stands - try both composite and s-video and use the one that gives the best quality.

I have 2 ways avaialbe for capture right now...

1.  Leadtek WinFast 2000 XP Expert TV Tuner for PC
2.  Dazzle DVC 100 Rev. 1.1 USB for Laptop

I still have this, ATI TV Wonder 650 PCI HD PVR, but I've set it aside for now.

I would avoid the USB device and use the Leadtek. Did you get a replacement ATi card then, you said above that the original was damaged in transit? These are supposed to be pretty good for capturing.

Aleksbmw , whats the screen resolution for an NTSC laserdisc ?

Be very careful talking about "resolution" for an analogue video format. Laserdiscs don't have pixels.

Since we're talking about resolution, I should point out to Alek that the image in his signature is 39% overheight...
