Star Wars 1997 DTS CD-ROMs (Released)

The DTS-6 can be made to play discs without film.  If you wanted to record from it, you'd need a proprietary analog cable (DB25) and a 5 channel recording mechanism.  I really don't think it'd be worth doing things that way.

If the ROTS discs contain the encrypted AUE files, instead of the older AUD files, then the "analogue hole" method is the only way.

Interesting.  Are there any discs out there simply of "scans" of the original films (as in film films) for each movie? Even if they're of terrible quality, that would interest me greatly.

Yes - but it's not quite that simple.

Historically, we know about two scans of 35mm prints of Star Wars that have been transferred to VHS bootlegs - one is full frame and the other widescreen. DVD transfers from both are 'out there'.

There is also the Puggo Grande project, which is a scan of a 16mm print of Star Wars direct to DVD. The follow-up project for Empire, 'Puggo Strikes Back', is not yet available.

Then there's Video Collector's "Theatre Performance" bootlegs of ESB and ROTJ. These are "cams" of the original films rather than telecine scans, and again have been through an intermediate VHS stage.

That's a card used on trailers - the top 'U' is the classification of the trailer, and the bottom 'U' is the classification of the film it's advertising.

(Before this was introduced, I remember a time when I went to the cinema to see a 'U' film - I think it was 'Return to OZ' - along with younger members of the family. One of the trailers shown was for 'The Fly', which was an '18' classification, and the trailer itself was not suitable for children. My parents were not impressed.)

Oh, and to answer your question, yes I think I've seen that card on VHS releases, when they used to have trailers on the tape before the film.

EDIT: I opened the blu-ray in avspmod using a script and there it's smooth. So it's MPC's fault.

It's not necessarily MPC, it might have something to do with the renderer or maybe even your video card driver. Is it the old MPC you're using or MPC-HC?

An example of the issue, here's a conversion using bicubic upsampling (Avisynth's default):

MPEG2Source("VTS_01_1.d2v", cpu=0)
Crop(0, 102, -0, -102)
ConvertToRGB(chromaresample="bicubic")

And here is the same frame with point (i.e. simple doubling of the chroma) upsampling:

MPEG2Source("VTS_01_1.d2v", cpu=0)
Crop(0, 102, -0, -102)
ConvertToRGB(chromaresample="point")

UEFA Euro 2012

What a night last night.

Firstly the France-Ukraine game and the thunderstorm - I can't ever remember a game being suspended because of weather before. Some good photos here.

And then another first - England beat Sweden in a competitive match. When we were down 2-1 I was thinking back to Euro 1992, but thankfully the final outcome was different this time.

It was probably an entertaining game for a neutral fan - but only because our defence was crap.

@Moth3r: Actually, the blockiness of strong reds is there in a lot of versions of the movies. Even the 2011 blu-rays. Since it's there in the source, I think it's better to post a screenshot which is directly comparable to the source to see the difference.

No - what I'm talking about about is not an artefact in the source, it's a consequence of the source's format and how that is decoded for display.

Examples to follow...

A bit late seeing as it's already a week into the tournament...

So Ireland were the first team to be knocked out, after they got thrashed 4-0 by Spain last night.

Holland's progress to the quarter-finals after two losses now depends on them beating Portugal and Germany beating Denmark.

From an English point of view, it seems to me that there is a lot less expectation on England to do well this time than there has been in previous Euro and World Cup competitions. May fans have now accepted that we are no longer in the "top tier" of international football and are second class when compared with Spain, Germany, Brazil, etc.

However, as Denmark and Greece have shown in Euro 92 and 04, with this format of only 16 teams any team can win. Once you're out of the group stage you're straight into the quarter finals...

Red5, what are you using to view the video and take screenshots? Your viewer is not interpolating/upsampling the chroma when converting YV12 into RGB - you can tell by the blockiness at the extremities of the strong reds.

I seem to recall you get this if you load an AviSynth script which delivers YV12 into VirtualDub - you can get smoother results if you add ConvertToRGB() at the end of the script.

The Avisynth documentation is confusing, but my understanding is that setting brightness and contrast for YUV video with Levels() is fine, but adjusting gamma using Levels() should ideally be carried out in RGB space.

However, I also think any chroma errors introduced by using Levels () to adjust gamma in YUV are theoretical and not of any practical consequence.

I am not sure where to put this, so I guess it can go here.

when I change the text editor to the plain text editor and go to page 515 of the political thread, I see the error message at the bottom of the page and the last few posts in that thread are cut off.   but, if I change back to the advanced text editor,  the error message goes away and the cut off posts are back.   weird.

It could have gone in the bug reports forum.

I personally don't want any explanation.  It's far more fun when there is no known answer.  We can then just suppose that the guy is completely nuts and laugh at his bizarre ways.

I completely agree.

I often wonder if he knows about this thread, or if he is completely oblivious to it.

I think he's just noticed this thread.
