The Red Dwarf appreciation thread.
Time

I watched it (and loved it) up until Rimmer left and Kochanski became a permanent member of the crew. I never watched any of the new stuff on Dave, although I heard it was quite good. Is it worth watching?

Favourite episodes:

Confidence & Paranoia
Thanks for the Memory
Queeg
Backwards
Polymorph
Timeslides
The Last Day
DNA
Quaratine
Back to Reality
Polymorph 2
Rimmerworld
Out of Time

The parallel universe Holly was actually called Hilly IIRC, but when Holly decided to have a sex change he modelled his appearance on her.

HD Stream logo removal?
Time

There's no way to remove it without damaging the image.

If it's alpha-blended (semi-transparent) - I can't tell from that image - it is possible to get rid of most of the logo without hurting the image too much. E.g. http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Rad-Helltrack-Edition-Now-Available/post/425964/#TopicPost425964

If it's solid, then your options are limited to inpainting or blurring, which do more damage to the image but may be acceptable. E.g. http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Counter-logo-removal-on-MPEG2-file/topic/12722/

[fill in the blank] Just Died!

Mel Smith 60.

Surprised to hear of Mel's death; he wasn't that old and I hadn't realised he'd been ill.

Responsible for some great comedy; I want to go and watch Morons From Outer Space and Wilt now.

A few weeks ago I was searching for a Smith and Jones sketch on Youtube but had no luck. It was on the set of a horror movie, and Smith and Jones were extras (who do you play? I'm "man with axe through head"). Part of the sketch went something like this (from memory):

- "Have you done this before?"

- "Yes, I was in Star Wars, I was a stormtrooper, the one going like this" [waves arms around]

- "That's interesting, I'll have to look out for that"

- "Oh it's not in, they cut me out"

- "Why?"

- "Well it looked stupid didn't it, a stormtrooper going like this" [waves arms around again]

Anyone else remember this, or can find a clip?

Windows 8
Time

My wife has a new laptop with Windows 8 installed; after using it a bit I've decided (like 99% of Windows users) that I hate the Metro interface. Although I've been told by IT-savvy people that underneath it's actually a fairly decent OS.

Apparently Windows 8.1 will have options to go straight to the desktop and avoid Metro, and also restores a scaled-down version of a "Start" menu (with a shut down option!)

But yeah, I'm still using XP on my main desktop for compatibility with an old scanner. Work still uses XP as well, although it's getting to a point where some of the software packages are crashing often due to XP's 32-bit memory access limitations.

It appears to be an Atari 2600 compatible joystick. Atari wasn't as strict as Nintentdo about third party products, so there were a lot of companies making all sorts of controllers. The fringe benefit was competitors such as Colecovision could use the same sticks too.

The 9-pin 'D' connector layout became something of a de-facto standard joystick port in the 8-bit console/home computer era (and carried through to early 16-bit machines too). The same joysticks could be used with Atari (2600 console and 8-bit machine such as 400, 800, XL and XE series), Commodore C64, Amstrad CPC, Sinclair ZX Spectrum, Atari ST and Amiga.

Anybody getting virus warnings today?
Time

Jay said:

Since AVG's site doesn't seem to define what the threat actually is, it's hard to tell if it's a problem or not. Is it a virus, or is it just a warning against blackhat SEO techniques (which I don't knowingly use and aren't a real threat of any kind regardless)?

It's a warning that someone else is using blackhat SEO techniques by, presumably, exploiting a vulnerability on ot.com's server to inject those backlinks. Although I don't know what they expect to gain from it as I'm pretty sure Google's algorithms are clever enough to ignore non-displaying links.

I honestly don't think there's anything to worry about, but that's easy for me to say as a Mac user ;)

I also don't think it's anything for end users to worry about, but you should contact your hoster about it.

Info: Recommended Editions of Disney Animated (and Partially Animated) Features
Time

Excellent reference thread.

One comment, you say that the 2002 DVD of Notre Dame is acceptable, however I remember reading that the bitrate is too low to handle the level of grain in the picture. This leads to some nasty compression artefacts. The R2 DVD appears to have been DNR'ed, so although the grain is missing the video has compressed better and doesn't show the extreme levels of mosquito noise. But it does have the 4% speed up which some find objectionable...

Excuse my ignorance (as always) but could you simply physically scan a laserdisc surface at a microscopic zoom rate, and use a pc to analyze the lans/pits and pull the information from it? That way you could pull a 100% pure video signal from it?

That would most certainly be possible, but very difficult. Consider that the LD itself might be subject to minor warping (many are) and you'd need one hell of a digital tilt servo to compensate for that while tracking.

Then consider that you'd have to contend with occlusion defects (dirt and other material between the plastic and the aluminum layer), possible laser rot (oxidation of the aluminum layer), ..., the list goes on.

And also consider that you'd need access to an electron microscope:

You mean try a sample out with Srestore? Send me the link, I can have a go.

Update on this: some time ago monks19 provided me with a sample from "The Martins and the Coys". I found that SRestore was reasonably successful in producing a 23.976 progressive fps clip. After trying a few different bob filters I eventually settled on YadifMod as the one that gave the best results:

MPEG2Source("D:\Video projects\The Martins and the Coys\t2.d2v", cpu=0)
YadifMod(mode=1,edeint=NNEDI3(field=-2))
SRestore()

Problem with HP G60-635DX Notebook Please help
Time

It seems that all laptop manufacturers go through bad patches; HP's laptop build quality has been crap in recent years.

If you want to check this, go on to eBay and search laptops by brand. Filter by "condition: used" and then "condition: for parts or not working" and make a note of the ratio. Last time I looked at this HP and Acer were the worst, Dell and Toshiba had better reliability.
