X0 Equivalent for vcr's?
Time
Unlike the X0 for laserdiscs, there is no universally accepted best deck for VHS playback.

I once followed a few threads on Doom9 about this, I'll try to summarise what I remember:

1. Don't consider anything other than JVC or Panasonic.
2. Professional edit decks have better tape transport build quality, so should give better results than even top of the range consumer decks.
3. SVHS decks with s-video outputs do offer an advantage, because even on standard VHS the chroma and luma are separate.
(However, there is some dispute that the VHS-only professional units may have bigger tape heads that are more suited to VHS playback than SVHS decks)
4. A time base corrector is essential, either built-in to the deck or as a separate unit.

This is the deck I use.

External video capture devices (non-DV, non-mpeg) ?
Time
Hmm.. not sure if it's possible. An external device must be connected to the PC somehow, and high-speed connections such as USB2.0 and IEEE-1394 can only do ~400Mbps. Not sure off the top of my head what the datarate of uncompressed PAL video is, but I'd expect it to be more than that.

That said, take a look at the TerraTec Grabster AV 250. It has no hardware encoder, yet claims it can do full res PAL and NTSC capture.

Mono mix for Moth3r's ANH DVD
Time
Thanks for that; there's always a risk of screwing up when you do something "blind", it's satisfying to know it worked out.

Belbucus indicated some time ago he'd be happy to share the final masters with me or anyone else. I believe he will be using the audio from the DC laserdisc as a reference for sync.

I'm not sure if mono PCM is allowable under the DVD spec, but if PCM (or lossless) is what is shared, it would be ideal for anyone who wants it to encode how they see fit.

2 . Should I de-interlace the image or use filters after I capture If you're capping NTSC-film, then it's preferable to IVTC before encoding. Noise reduction filters are also useful.

3. should I capture directly to DVD or use lossless codecs like Huffy
Sure, use huffy if you have enough space, or MJPEG if you want better compression. I wouldn't recommend capture direct to MPEG-2.

4. how to make an anamorphic image from 4:3 widescreen laserdisc ?
Crop out the black bars, stretch vertically to your new resolution, and add (smaller) black bars back in if necessary.

Mono mix for Moth3r's ANH DVD
Time
For those who are interested:

http://sky.prohosting.com/oparviai/soundtouch/soundstretch.html
soundstretch mono.wav mono_ntsc.wav -rate=-4.096

Like I said, a doddle...

Actually, the resulting file was about 34ms too short due to rounding (23.976 is actually 24000/1001; I tried soundstretch with -rate=-4.0959 but the resulting wav was exactly the same). So I split the difference and added 17ms of silence to the start of the file. I think it's very unlikely that any desync will be noticeable, but I haven't got Dr M's DVD to test it with.

I'll post the AC-3 encoded file this evening.

Interesting article on DVD production

Interview with DreamWorks' Mark Atkinson

Discussing the details of the "Shrek" DVD, interesting to note:

- The MPEG encoder used is by Sony - not sure whether this is a hardware encoder or a software application (would it be the encoder included with Vegas?)

- They use 3 pass encoding, but often 5 or 6 are required until the quality is satisfactory.

- Scenarist is used for the authoring.

- Pitch correction for PAL releases is only applied at the director's request, because it can add digital stepping. (Related to this, see this discussion - apparently Spielberg requested pitch preservation for the PAL release of Jurassic Park.)

Grinder, in reply to your PM, the French laserdiscs do have the English titlecard and opening crawl (with French subtitles in the lower black bar). The German discs have a German language crawl.

I'm not a laserdisc expert but I believe the X9 was the replacement for the X0, and added a more advanced comb filter and facility to playback both sides of a disc. But from what Laserman said previously, these additions were at the expense of a lower overall build quality.

True, the D925 replaced the 2950 and had additional features such as freeze frame/slow motion on CLV discs and an AC-3 output. But that does not necessarily make it "better".

Although performance of the two units is very similar, it has been suggested that the 2950 might be slightly superior (less noisy) due to a better build quality and a simpler video path. This is yet to be confirmed conclusively, however.

Also consider this: is the X9 better than the player it replaced (the X0)?

Info: Does Anyone Have The Old Original Theater Bootleg '77 Tape? (Released)

It didn't "have bits of the mono mix in it", it was the mono mix. (However the video did not have the pre-ANH title crawl.) Anyway, see this thread for more details.

The quality might be a little better than the boot of the telecine.
It is, if you can live with the PAL speedup.

The guy who posted sound clips on theforce.net, had a copy in pal betamax in his dad's collection.
It'd be interesting to see how the quality and integrity of his copy compares with my VHS.
