Rave Classics
Time
Ooh - nice topic!

Charly was the track that started the demise of "rave" - in the UK anyway, it still lives on in Germany - after Charly, rave was all chart-orientated stuff featuring samples from Sesame Street or Rhubarb and Custard.

Here are some of my favourite early dance classics off the top of my head, I'm sure I could list loads more:
Gat Decor - Passion
Awesome 3 - Don't Go
The Age of Love - The Age of Love
Interactive - Forever Young
Love Decade - So Real
Starlight - Numero Uno
Liquid - Sweet Harmony
Artemisia - Bits 'n' Pieces
Tricky Disco - Tricky Disco

Temporal smoothing without nasty side effects
Time
I think it's an interesting theory and it's encouraging to hear you have obtained good results.

Some time ago I attempted to use VirtualDub's temporal filter to clean up some VHS caps, but I was getting an awful residual image after every scene change - similar to what I noticed in the Cowclops V2 DVD screenshots, but worse.

Is the filter you used the same as the AVISynth TemporalSmoother function, which is apparently a direct port from VDub? If so, then you could probably refine your process to a single AVISynth script, saving on the amount of hard drive space required.

Here's a relevant thread on Doom9, which explains the difference betweeen "bidirectional" filtering used by TemporalSoften, for example, and a true forwards/backwards average function like you have written.

It'd be interesting to see how your method compares against other popular filters.

Citizen, just a couple of issues you should be aware of when you come to do ROTJ. The French laserdisc is missing a screenwipe from the end of side 3, so you'll need to use you German discs to fix that. It occurs just before the first scene with Wicket; however, it's nowhere near as bad as the missing section from ANH.

The other issue that caught me out was that the position of the letterboxed image takes a shift down somewhere in the middle of side 4. I'd seen a little shift before in the Ben/Canyon scene in ANH side 1, but this is quite a large jump of about 10 lines or so.

I see what you've done now, you've calculated how to turn a 16:9 anamorpic image into a 4:3 letterboxed image - compress 576 lines down to 432 and add 72-line thick bars top and bottom.

That's not what we're doing here. The image starts off in 4:3 and we want to make it 16:9. To do that it must be stretched vertically by (16/9)/(4/3)=1.333.

After cropping out the black bars with crop(0, 126, 720, 324) we have 324 lines left.

324 * 1.333 = 432.

I can't make sense of your calculation; what you've basically done is 576/(4/3). Now if you used 576 because it's the total number of lines in the PAL image, then the method is incorrect. However, the answer is right because, by coincidence, 576 is also equal to the number of active lines in the letterboxed picture 324 * (16/9).

My result was based on 324 * (16/9) / (4/3) = 432.

The sound on this set is the 1985 Digital Sound Re-master and does not have that line. It is effectively the same audio as the Dark Jedi Special Collection and 1992 Pan and Scan sets.
That's interesting; according to DavisDVD the line was added to the 1985 remastered mix, but lost again during the 1993 THX remastering.

A nice collection of covers, Russ.

The Alvin covers on the 1995 fullscreen tapes are my favourite, and are what my DVD covers done by Metallaxis are based on.

I think the 1991 widescreen edition was the first time a movie had a VHS release in the letterboxed widescreen format. If I remember, the Star Wars Trilogy was released along with Alien and Die Hard under the slogan "Widescreen - as they were meant to be seen". Is that trailer included on your tape? I have it on Die Hard.
