OT.com fan edit blog: your thoughts please (Update: development underway)
Time
Yes, SFV files are used for verification. It is basically just a text file containing filenames and CRC-32 hashes, e.g.:

VIDEO_TS.IFO D365D6F9
VIDEO_TS.VOB 7840CE50
VIDEO_TS.BUP D365D6F9
VTS_01_0.IFO 59EED0CF
VTS_01_0.VOB 380E1F72
VTS_01_1.VOB 0DCBD3BD
etc...

I don't think it's too contentious, but then again the MPAA lawyers would probably disagree. Sites that provide hash signatures (albeit more complicated than simple CRC32 hashes) that can be used to identify files on P2P networks have been shut down before now.

So probably best to play safe and leave this kind of thing alone.

BLADE RUNNER: The Unauthorized OFF-WORLD Box Set (Released)

Quality control? Sure. YOU volunteering your time to watch the movies? Yep. I have been giving advice by PM and email to several members of these forums. Most of the time anyone posts up a sample, I'll download and provide feedback. This particular flaw could have been spotted in 0.17s by anyone with a keen eye for smooth motion.

VERY few people noticed the issue. It's not as massive as you would expect. Perhaps the reason is, as Citizen says, those people in NTSC countries are more accustomed to jerky motion from 3:2 pulldown, so are more willing to accept 24 into 30fps with a freeze every 5 frames. Now I am normally the one to argue common sense when it comes to quality, i.e. you don't need dual layer, you don't need a 10-pass encode - but this is a not a subjective opinion, this is a fundamental flaw in your encode. There is an accepted mechanism for putting 24fps onto an NTSC DVD, and this is not it.

... it's absolute crap quality. I downloaded it and wasn't worth my time. Nothing 2 hours should ever be put on a single layer dvd. It's got video noise all over it.
What goes around, come around, eh!

As per Rikter above, my version wouldn't fit any more audio tracks than just one. This is pure audio/video quality.
Maybe if you hadn't squandered 20% of the bitrate on encoding redundant information (repeated frames) then you would have been able to fit another audio track on?

<rant>
I wouldn't be very happy if I had downloaded 12GB only to find a problem like that. OK, I know my laserdisc rips aren't perfect, but guys, can we have a bit of quality control please?

I suggest you:
1. Check your releases before uploading.
2. Provide a ~50MB sample VOB so others can check quality before deciding whether to download the full release.

Sadly, this is not the first release to suffer from a bad framerate problem - it also affected MagnoliaFan's Remastered Phantom Edit 1.2, uploaded by Rikter the Christmas before last.

Frustrated with DVD burning

Who told you that? It does matter. I have an older player which glitches on anything burnt at 4x, but plays fine at 2x.

***The NEW "official" Screenshots thread ***
Time

Zion and I agreed it was time for a total rewrite of the official screenshots thread. So with credit to BadAsh71 who originally started the screenshots thread, here is the new and improved version...

This thread provides a means of directly comparing the video quality of the different Star Wars DVD transfers that are available. Please note that comparing them by a still image alone does not tell the full story, as things like video artifacts on playback, audio quality and overall presentation are not accounted for. It does however give an indication of video quality and a general idea of the visual differences between each transfer. The images can also be helpful if you're doing your own transfers, to see what to look for, and what problems to avoid.

The following versions are included:
* George Lucas 2004 "Official" Extra Special Edition
* Dr Gonzo - DVD-5 - Anamorphic - "Definitive Collection" LD Set
* Farsight - DVD-5 - Anamorphic - "Definitive Collection" LD Set
* Dark Jedi/Segaflip - DVD-5 - Letterboxed - Japanese "Special Collection" LD Set
* Moth3r - DVD-5 - Anamorphic - PAL LD Set
* Citizen - DVD-5 - Anamorphic - PAL LD Set
* Cowclops/TR47 1.0 - DVD-5 - Letterboxed - "Definitive Collection" LD Set
* Cowclops/TR47 2.0 - DVD-5 - Anamorphic - "Definitive Collection" LD Set
* ISOMIX - DVD-5 - Letterboxed - "Definitive Collection" LD Set
* Look - DVD-5 - Letterboxed - Special Edition LD Set

The originaltrilogy.com official screenshots are hosted at Zion's site. Frames were chosen to highlight different aspects of the video, including color, detail, and black and white points. Click on the thumbnails below to view:

A smaller number of frames can also be seen over at Moth3r's comparison page. This page features a dynamic image swapping script which can really help when making very close comparisons of two different versions.

Further comments on the screenshots can be found at the original Official Screenshots Thread and the original screenshots feedback thread.

If you would like to help add screenshots for a transfer that isn't on the list, please contact Zion.

AC-3 vs. MPEG audio?
Time
I imagine that some choose MP2 because the only free AC-3 encoder (within ffmpeg) is not considered to be as high quality as commercial encoders (that pay to use the Dolby libraries). Also AC-3 encoding is a more complex process, requiring things like dialogue normalisation to be set up correctly.

There are some good open-source MP2 encoders (TooLame, MP2Enc), also some video encoders (TMPGEnc, CCE) include MP2 audio encoders.

Also note that some choose to author discs with uncompressed PCM audio, for maximum possible quality.

Any good dust, dirt and scratch removal software?
Time
I can't recommend anything as I've not done this myself. There is probably a neat way to make manual corrections to individual frames in one of the popular non-linear editing packages (Vegas or Premiere).

Using freeware tools could be a little trickier, you'd probably need to make corrections in something like GIMP then insert the fixed images back into the video using the AviSynth ImageSource command. Unless anyone else knows of an easier way?
