Info: BLADE RUNNER THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION
Time
This preservation community on this forum relates to films that are not yet (or never will be) available on DVD.

The Blade Runner game is not a film.

Distributing an old computer game is not preservation.

(To illustrate this: suppose there was an arcade game of Blade Runner. If you were to dump the ROM code then write a driver so that the game could run in MAME, then that would be preservation.)

(The PC game can still be played on current hardware - so it doesn't need preserving.)

What are the notable differences between the original and the '85 remix?

And, if the '85 mix is closest to the original Dolby Stereo, how close is the '93 mix to the original 70mm 6-track mix?

Many people have said that the '93 mix is simply a downmix of the 6-track, although as stated above this contradicts what the DC production notes say.

Yes it is Dolby Surround encoded. However, PCM is not Dolby Digital (it has not been compressed with the AC3 codec).

For more information, see http://www.dolby.com/assets/pdf/tech_library/78_dvd-tm-s.pdf.

Maybe someone with a 4:3 TV, you wants a sharper picture with correct black level and an absence of temporal ghosting?

Info: New binary group - alt.binaries.fan-edits
Time
What the story with this?

From what I can see, there is an incorrectly-constructed control message in alt.config from someone calling themselves "be". (The message includes a copy of the originaltrilogy.com forum rules!)

(FWIW, I would suggest that alt.binaries.movies.fan-edits or alt.binaries.multimedia.fan-edits would be a more appropriate group name, but anyway...)

Now however, there does seem to be a control message archived on isc.org's ftp server. But the details don't look correct at all:

Zion and I corrected a couple of example frames to show what can be achieved, you can see them at the end of this thread.

My set does have its flaws, but I specifically wanted to concentrate more on sound quality than video quality, because that is what makes Star Wars great, and also because no other transfer has PCM audio. Something came up a few weeks ago, maybe you could confirm:
the PCM audio on your V1 was apparently recorded from the LD player's analogue output, and there are some reports of digital clipping caused by the input level being too high. Was V2 also recorded over analogue, or is it resampled from a digitally extracted clone of the laserdisc PCM?

Hopefully, once the X0 project is complete, it will put this thread to rest as I'm sure it will be the new standard, and there will be no further disputes as to which is best.
I doubt it, somehow...

Imagine what you could do by taking a colour/gamma corrected DVD, and using the X0 transfer (to fix the SE elements), and one of the DVB captures (to fix certain DVD defects). One day, maybe...

You have both Quicktime and Realplayer installed? *shudders*

I'd recommend you nuke both of those and install a non-proprietary, non-commercial, open source alternative - XviD.

Regarding aspect ratios, that's something that is not particularly well-supported in computer based formats at the moment. You're best off resizing to achieve a 1:1 pixel aspect ratio before encoding.

***//BUILDING EMPIRE\\: PAL & NTSC DVD - NEW EDITION NOW ONLINE! ***

I've just noticed something at binsearch.info - if you include the filename in quotes in the subject (as is the default for most posting apps I know of) then it identifies the NFO file and will allow you to view it from the site. If you look further down, Grinder's and Starkiller's posts appear in this format.

segaflip doesn't do this at the moment - hopefully if he sees this he will change the format of his headers in the future.

Anyway, back on topic - Jambe's disc is excellent. This is the sort of release that makes me proud to be associated with this site.
