Info Wanted: Anyone Planning on making Anamorphic versions using 2006 OUT DVDs?
Time
Can I just take this opportunity to remind everyone that we (Jay, Zion and I) are fine with any projects involving the 2006 DVDs - resizing to anamorphic, adding additional audio tracks or whatever. However, this would not really be a "fan edit", so we came up with the term "custom DVD" to identify such projects.

We consider that custom DVDs are not substantially different enough from the retail release to allow for open discussion about their distribution. Any such discussion, including phrases such as "email me for details", will be deleted.

It is however acceptable to provide instruction so that others may re-create your project, using their own purchased copy of the retail DVD. If required, links to download custom made subtitles or unreleased/obsolete audio tracks (i.e. tracks not available on any retail DVD/audio CD) may be posted.

(And, for the record, I was thinking of getting the PAL DVDs to make an anamorphic NTSC version - with the original mono mix as an alternative audio option.)

In defence of the 2004 DVDs

I've just seen the light!

All this time I thought the blue colour-cast to the Tantive corridors was due to poor quality control. But no, evidently, George Lucas aimed for the colder, bluish tone!

And the crushing of the blacks and loss of shadow detail? Lucas apparently wanted to "emphasize the mood and the things about to happen".

Full article is here if anyone wants to read it (I'm too lazy). I'm sure there are more amazing revelations in there somewhere. Post to this thread if you find any.

(I just remembered reading somewhere the explanation of Luke's green-coloured lightsabre aboard the Falcon. Apparently, the lightsabre is set to "training mode" - presumably to stop him from accidently slicing off parts of his own anatomy during his practice sessions.)

Erm... XviD! Find it here.

3) What do I set the resolution as to rip in 4:3?

My JVC VHS deck has "a Y/C filtering technique incorporated under license from Faroudja
Laboratories Inc." (but I doubt whether it has the bandwidth expansion capability of the VS50).

I could try running the composite output from the D925 into the VHS deck and capturing its s-video output. But as I understand it from previous discussions, the comb filter in the LD player will have already processed and recombined the video signal, so there probably won't be any benefit. I'd be interested to do this anyway and compare some identical frames.

Or maybe I should just wait and see what the soon-to-be-released DVD looks like...

Thanks for answering that. Very interesting theory, but sadly its implementation is way beyond my level of ability!

The halos can be reduced by lowering the "sharpness" setting in the proc amp controls for the capture card drivers. But then, the image does not appear to contain so much detail (and I mean real detail rather than false detail from edge enhancement). This is what I did for Jedi, and several people commented that they were disappointed with the softer picture.

I haven't yet found a good filter that is able to remove the halos. And capturing a softer image then using a sharpening filter does not seem to give as good a result.

I never got around to asking, but what exactly is meant by the term "remapping"?

I could make improvements in the following aspects:
- better colour (settings were wrong in the original capture)
- better audio (I could now capture a direct digital source; also there was an error in the original AC3 mix - level too low)
- better noise filtering (advances in avisynth functions, see Doom9)

Detail and sharpness would be the same as the existing version, but I think I would make an anamorphic NTSC DVD this time. I could in theory add the mono mix as an alternative audio option (although the fully restored mix is not yet finished, so this would just be a roughly patched-up version).

I fancy having a go just to see how the video would compare with the X0 project and the official '06 DVD. However, if I did do such a disc, it wouldn't be distributed (due to there being an official DVD release).

So, this is how the DVDs are going to look...
Time
I reckon there are several ways in which I could improve on my original transfer.

What I would like to see is an objective comparison between the official version, the finished X0 project and an improved Moth3r transfer. Just think what would happen if a reputable home entertainment magazine or website was to report that the fan-created bootlegs are higher quality than the official DVD release. That's the sort of publicity our cause needs.

(Saying that, the official DVDs do seem to have an absence of dot-crawl that all laserdisc transfers suffer from to some degree.)
