Ripping video from DVD

You shouldn't get interlaced frames with PAL for those movies shot on film. However, this was a made-for-TV movie, so it's possible that you're dealing with a poor NTSC-PAL conversion. This might be what's throwing Womble off, don't know, only ever used it once.

I can think of two possible solutions, neither is ideal:

1. Process the video with AVISynth or VirtualDub to try and make it progressive. This means re-encoding the whole stream.
2. Buy the Region 1 NTSC version and see if you get the same effects.

Star Wars DVD Menu Help!
Time
Yes you will need to have the files from the anamorphic DVD on your hard drive.

Is this a custom-made anamorphic DVD, or are you talking about the video from the 2004 DVDs? If it's a custom-made disc, then check it has the chapter stops at the correct positions. If it's the 2004 video, then your scene selection menu probably won't work properly.

Oh and BTW it's one user account per person on this board.

separation of dialogue/sound effects in center channel of surround sound?
Time
Let's see:
- Darth Editous recorded himself doing a Mark Hamill impression.
- Adywan mixed parts of his soundtrack from the ground up (using sound effect libraries? not sure).
- ADigitalMan scoured several Liam Neeson films to find the dialogue he wanted for his Ep. III edit.
- Trooperman is redubbing all of Hayden Christensen's dialogue in his reworking of Ep. II.

Software for separating music from backround sound?
Time
This question gets asked often, we ought to have a sticky. To the best of my knowledge:

  • With 5.1 audio, dialogue in the centre channel, it can be done with BeSweet by decoding into separate WAVs and extracting just the front left and front right channels. You will be left with music and effects, but dialogue should be mostly gone.

  • With 2-channel Dolby surround, you could try a 5.1 upmix (see Doom9) then discard the unwanted channels as above.

  • With stereo audio, it may be possible to reduce dialogue with an audio editor, e.g. Sound Forge, by the same vocal elimination techniques used to create karaoke tracks (LINK). Or you could try software such as THIS. Either way, the results are not likely to be perfect.

  • With mono audio, I don't think there's a chance in hell.

Fix for low audio on ANH and TESB

(This will only work if your AC3 decoder applies dialogue normalization. That should be the case for all DVD players and hardware decoders. Software DVD players I'm not so sure of, but it does seem to work with PowerDVD.)

    1. Make 2 new folders on your hard drive (named "original" and "fixed"). Copy all the files off your original disc into the first folder.

    2. Download the program VOBDNorm from here: ftp://ftp.coises.com/vobdnorm-1.0.zip, and extract the exe file into your command path (e.g. c:\windows\system32).

    3. Open a command window, and navigate to where your original and fixed folders are located.

    4. Type the following command:
    VOBDorm original\VTS_01_1.VOB fixed\VTS_01_1.VOB 31
(Note I've used 31 here for maximum volume. Strictly it should be around 27, if I've measured correctly.)

    5. Repeat step 4 for VTS_01_2.VOB up to VTS_01_5.VOB.

    6. Copy the IFO and BUP files from original into fixed.

    7. Now burn the contents of the fixed folder as a DVD-video with Nero, etc... (you might want to use a re-writable disc first just to make sure this method works)

Let me know how you get on!

Well, on the one hand now anyone can upload to myspleen. And the passkey system is a much more effective way of keeping track of share ratios than IP addresses (or whatever Demonoid uses) so there is more incentive not to "hit and run".

But they do seem to have tightened up in what they will allow, I noticed a couple of torrents that have been removed.
