How to make a Star Wars DVD with the restored mono mix PCM
Time

See thread describing the mono mix restoration project:
http://www.originaltrilogy.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=9&threadid=7222

Here's a quick guide to create a DVD with this audio track:

1. Copy the files from the Region 1 GOUT disc onto your hard drive using DVD Decrypter.

2. Using PgcDemux, demux the MPEG-2 video and alien subtitles, and extract celltimes.txt. (Do not use IfoEdit to demux the subs or Muxman will throw up an error later on).

3. Open the mono mix WAV with an audio editor (e.g. Sound Forge, Audacity) and insert 1.017s of silence at the start of the file; save.

4. Use Muxman (standard version) to multiplex the M2V video, delay-corrected WAV audio and subtitles, using the celltimes.txt file to set chapter points.

5. Use IfoEdit to copy the subtitle colour palette from the official disc, VTS_03_0.IFO, PGC1, and paste into VTS_01_0.IFO of your newly authored DVD (if you don't do this, Greedo's subs will appear in red text!)

(6. At this point I used PgcEdit to insert a pre-command to turn the subtitles on by default; not sure if this step is necessary or not.)

7. Use ImgBurn in build mode to build the disc image and burn to a dual-layer disc.

Post here with any questions/comments, or if you need a more detailed guide.

How to use HuffYUV

Sorry. Anyways I got the cable I needed for audio. But now the audio and video don't match up. Not just unsynched, the audio and video are different lengths. Why is this and what can I do about it? Look at your capture timing options in VDub. I recommend you use the option to sync audio to video by resampling the audio. Also select the two options at the top for dropping and inserting frames to keep sync. If it's still out of sync, de-select the option to correct video timing for fewer frame drops/inserts.
The main question was: What options do I have for rendering a Huffy file to a final avi? I would prefer to keep it lossless. Huffyuv or Lagarith.
But I don't want the rendered avi to be bigger than it needs to be?
For example, I took an mp3 audio file that was 7mb, trimmed 2 minutes, re-rendered it as lossless audio and it came out to be 57mb. Should I be worried about doing this with video, making a file bigger than what it originally was.
MP3 is lossy, so obviously if you save it as lossless then it will be bigger. For example, if you capture video to Xvid, then render as huffyuv, it will be larger. If you capture to Huffyuv, you'll be fine (as long as you don't save uncompressed RGB!)
What can I do about the video image being shifted up in the PDI captures? And is it normal for the half size PDI images to be blurry while the DV frames look sharper? (This only appears at half size.)

That's just the effect of interlacing. The top capture has discarded one field, whereas the bottom cap has blended both fields.
I'm not sure what to adjust in the virtualdub capture settings. It seems the gain might be too bright on the PDI captures or should I worry about the brightness or gamma? Can you tell what settings should be adjusted or is there really nothing that can be done besides trial and error.
Press L to get the level adjustment up. First adjust brightness so that black is black and not dark grey. Then adjust contrast until white is bright but doesn't clip. There are more scientific ways to do it, I think I explained in a previous post somewhere.

The extension 001, 002, 003, etc. is usually just another naming convention for RAR files, like the old-style RAR, R00, R01. (You sometimes also see extensions in the format part001.rar, part002.rar, etc.)

No real update I'm afraid. The noise reduction aspect is taking far longer than Belbucus anticipated, plus he has apparently been swamped with real work.

In other news, I've been spending time reading up on Dolby Digital (AC-3) encoding. I've also found that Muxman can author DVDs with mono PCM audio, and PowerDVD will play them back OK (although erroneously reports a LPCM 2.0 768kbps audio track).

Meanwhile, Sally celebrated her 40th birthday…in the Rovers. Kevin gave a speech and a sung song as the dogs whined in the surrounding area.

best way for a LD - DVD conversion
Time
If by "best" you mean easiest, then a DVD recorder is the way to go.

On the other hand, if you want the highest possible quality, then you need to capture lossless from a good quality PCI video capture card, filter/process using AviSynth or VirtualDub, then carry out a multi-pass encode to MPEG-2. There's a lot to learn, but many members here have experience from trying to squeeze the best out of the Star Wars laserdiscs!

This guide is a good start. Anything else you want to know, just ask.

Need help with VOB issue

The neatest way would be to use an AviSynth script with MPEG2Source(). Install AviSynth, and get the DGMPGDec plugin. Run DGIndex, open your M2V file, and save a D2V index file. Now in notepad, type the following:

LoadPlugin("pathname\DGDecode.dll")
MPEG2Source("filename.d2v")

Save with the extension .avs. Hopefully Vegas should be able to open this as if it were an AVI file.

Failing that, you could use VirtualDub-MPEG2 to load the M2V, and save out as an AVI. Use a lossless codec like huffyuv or Lagarith - but you will still need a fair amount of drive space.

Funny stories
Time
I'm at work this morning and a mate comes over pissing himself laughing.

He'd just phoned his brother to wish him happy birthday and gets told a story you couldnt make up....

A group of his mates share a house, and it was the boring ones birthday (his nickname is Mr.Sensible). Whenever they go out, he always stops drinking and goes home at about 11. This time, his housemates decide they are having none of it, and because its his birthday, they want to get him mashed. Someone has the great idea of spiking his drink (what with, i dont know, but i doubt its alcohol).

At about midnight, he complains of feeling ill, and after a bit of banter, he leaves for home. At the end of the night, this guy and his housemates get home, and find Mr.Sensible hyper as fuck, in only his boxers and scratches all over his chest.

"You will never guess what fucking happened to me on the way home!!!" said Mr.Sensible, high as a kite.

this guy was expecting him to say he had atacked someone or worse.

"i was walking him home through the park and i found a FUCKING LEPRECHAUN!!!"

apparently everyone started laughing at him until he pointed to the cupboard under the stairs that had a chair wedged up against it...."its in there, i caught the cunt and brought it home with me!"

this guy moved the chair and opened the door to find a MIDGET cowering in the darkness!

its been a long time since i laughed so much, i nearly pissed myself.

because of his so-called mates spiking his drinks, Mr.Sensible has now been charged with abduction and false imprisonment along with a few other charges and has been told to expect a hefty spell in prison. His housemates are now plucking up the courage to own up.

the guy might see the funny side in about 10 years.
