Star Wars - The Vintage Edit (* unfinished project *)
Time

I've been meaning to try this for ages but never got around to it.

I think it's desirable in this case to use the genuine Dolby decoding process, and not any old generic upmix algorithm.

But AFAIK there is no simple way to get a Dolby Prologic upmix in software. The methods I've seen on Doom9 (actually for DPL II which gives a 5.1 upmix, but the same method should also be applicable for a DPL 4.0 upmix) use the audio decoder filter present in WinDVD or PowerDVD, inserted into a filter chain in Graphedit, with the output directed to a set of WAV files.

One of the problems with the petition
Time

Original petition:

George Lucas
Skywalker Ranch
Marin County, California

Dear Mr. Lucas:

In recent public comments, you have stated that the original versions of the classic Star Wars Trilogy would not be released to DVD at any time in the future. This letter is an open plea on behalf of your devoted fans for you to reconsider your position regarding the release of your wonderful films.

In the August 2002 edition of Star Wars Insider Magazine, you are quoted as saying, "I think of the film as The Special Edition. I don't think of it as the early version, any more than I would put early rough cuts on. I could put four or five rough cuts onto the thing and say, 'This is how it advanced.' I consider The Special Edition as being the final version at this point. I don't even worry about the other ones, because it went through a lot of incarnations to get to the final stage." You recently reiterated this position in comments made during the American Cinematheque tribute to ILM and Skywalker Sound in Hollywood.

While we appreciate your creative viewpoint on the evolution of the films, we respectfully submit that there is tremendous importance in the original theatrical prints of the Star Wars Trilogy. Above and beyond the nostalgic value that they hold for millions of fans the world over, Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi are landmark films that represent watershed moments in motion picture history. To preserve the original, award-winning work of the many artisans, sound technicians, craftsmen, and special effects artists is to do justice to their priceless contributions.

Undeniably, these movies are also cultural placeholders for millions of film fans. The impact that the original Star Wars Trilogy made on countless numbers of children, young people, and grownups everywhere is indisputable. Preserving the unaltered theatrical release forms of these movies and making them available to your public is of utmost importance.

Those of us who love your movies and even those who are only casual film fans admire your drive to perfect your vision of the Star Wars experience. We know that you constantly push your creative companies to blaze new frontiers of digital filmmaking and that you are also an artist who is never satisfied and strives for perfection. We, the film-going public, benefit from your vision and embrace the ever-growing Star Wars universe.

Furthermore, we understand that you have commercial concerns and that you need to consider the financial viability of any home video product that you release. Perhaps a Limited Edition run of the original films along with a Special Edition release would be in order. This approach would sate niche market demand, while still targeting the general public and no doubt breaking home video sales records. We want it to be known that there is enormous demand for the original theatrical versions of the films. Your devoted fans would more than likely purchase both an Original Trilogy release as well as any Special Edition versions.

An entire generation grew up with these movies and loves them dearly. They have created treasured memories and will always hold a place in our lives. We hope that you take to heart the hopes and wishes of the undersigned as well as the countless others who feel the same.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

DVD Ripping and Editing with Surround Sound - HELP ME!
Time

I would first demux the video and audio streams.

If you can load the MPEG-2 video as a source into your editing software directly, then great. Otherwise, you should first save it out to an AVI file using lossless compression. You will need a fair bit of hard drive space.

To edit the 5.1 audio, you will need to decode the AC3 file into six mono WAV files.

Never used Vegas but I think it is able to work with multi-channel audio. Certainly the latest version of Sound Forge can.

Puggo GRANDE - 16mm restoration (Released)
Time

Heard back from Belbucus regarding the mono soundtrack:

While it might yield a useful reference, 16mm soundtracks have a fairly limited frequency response – around 150 to 5000 Hz with a dynamic range of about 40 dB.  A 35mm Academy mono optical track is more like 45 to 8000 Hz with a dynamic range of around 48 dB.

From wikipedia, the linear track on a VHS tape has a frequency response of 100 to 10000Hz, so was probably a better source for the audio - certainly in terms of high-frequency content.

Johnny Mnemonic Japan Cut <JM> Extended (Released)

This thread was started some time before we had finalised the forum rules.

Changing menus and adding English subtitles to a retail DVD classes this project as a Custom DVD, not a Fan Edit.

As such, information, feedback or reviews are welcome, but you are not permitted to discuss distribution methods such as torrents or rapidshare.

'Bring Back... Star Wars' (UK TV - Channel Four Documentary) (Released)
Time

Finally had a chance to watch this last night. (By the time I got round to it, it had gone from 4oD, but I got Xvid from alt.binaries.tv. There's also a MEPG-2 version on alt.binaries.starwars.)

It was all good fun. Liked the "celebrity ambush" approach. My wife enjoyed it as well which is unusual because she doesn't normally like the same TV as me.

The worst part for me were the clips from Jedi with the CGI sarlaac - which contradicted JLC's "sand minge" description.

adding LFE to GOUT (Released)
Time

...  Playing the AC3 file with ProLogic 2 seems to discard the bass channel for some reason, but DTS Neo:6 retains it, thankfully, although the placement of elements is probably different. ...

Prologic II generates its own LFE/.1 channel by upmixing the Lt/Rt channels to 5.1, so this is to be expected.

I've no idea how my system would handle a 2.1 file, probably just play through the front left and front right speakers with the LFE sent to the sub-woofer - so the centre and surround channels would be lost.

Would be interesting to create a plain Dolby Prologic 4.0 upmix from the 93' audio, then add your LFE channel to the mix and encode as 4.1 AC3.

[Request] Uploads to newsgroup or torrent

I guess the right place for this, but feel free to rant if it's not.

Actually, it's not the right place - this forum is for the "can someone do me a SW-style crawl" or "can someone rotoscope these sabers for me" type of requests.

Requests for uploads would be better posted in the thread pertaining to that project. However, I see you've already posted in the Editdroid thread, so I'll let you off this time. ;-)

Restrict the editing of posts
Time

The feature that allows you to edit your posts is undoubtably useful - it allows you to correct spelling mistakes you might spot after hitting the "post" button, or to add further information to the first post in a topic.

However, there are some users who abuse the facility by removing all text in a post, making any subsequent replies meaningless and following the thread difficult.

I would like to see something implemented to prevent this, but I'm not sure what the best approach would be:
 - stop all users from editing their posts
 - lock all first posts by default
 - prevent editing of any posts which have replies
 - allow additional text, but original post text cannot be deleted?
