An interesting thread from Blu-Ray.com (no Blu-Rays yet)
Time

Lucas has absolutely no excuse for not releasing the original unaltered trilogy on BD.

Each disc should feature the original, unaltered 5.1 sound taken from the archival six-tracks. Possibly also a 4.0 mix from the discrete 4-track masters used to create the Dolby Stereo soundtracks. Modern remixes are optional.

In addition, the first disc needs to include both the original SW and the '81 re-release ANH crawl, and of course the original mono mix.

As for all the other shit - '97 SE, '04 DVD and/or 3D versions - he's welcome to do whatever he wants with them.

I uploaded some frame grabs and a short sampler video:

http://www.hardbat.com/puggo/grandePics.html

The video is XVid compressed, but still in scope aspect ratio. The pictures are converted to 720x405 to bring them closer to the proper ratio.

Oh I forgot to ask - what post processing (if any) has been applied to this video?

Indeed, the frames are not complete... that was clear when I noticed that the bottom of Greedo's subtitles (on the 2-line subtitle) was chopped - not just on my capture, but on the film itself!  My captures are really close to the boundaries of the film.

From the screenshots posted above, it looks like it's only the bottom that has been cropped. It probably wouldn't be that obvious if it weren't for the subtitles, which is disappointing. Not knowing much about 16mm film - is this just a badly cropped print or do you often find 16mm transfers that are over-cropped?

I will take your advice and eyeball it with the DVDs.

Your version of my vid is nice.  What did you use to change the aspect ratio?  I've been wrestling with an older version of Vegas, and not completely happy with the results.  And I tried using "resize" in VirtualDub, but I keep getting an error message that it's incompatible with the compression (it works if I do it uncompressed - I was attempting it with the Panasonic codec).

That's because the DV codec only supports resolutions of 720x576 for PAL and 720x480 for NTSC - however, I assume your final resolution will be 720x480 anyway for DVD authoring.

If you are going the AviSynth processing route, just add the following to the end of the script:

Spline36Resize(720, 362)
AddBorders(0, 59, 0, 59)

This will give you a 2.35:1 image letterboxed for a 16:9 anamorphic NTSC DVD. Adjust to suit your source, but note that the final resolution must remain 720 by 480 (= (2 x 59) + 362).

The files were posted about 2 weeks ago. If you're getting "Article not found" messages then the files are no longer on the server.

When using the binary newsgroups you need to know about the server's "retention".

A server you access for free through your ISP will generally have a retention of 7 days or less. Premium pay servers can have retentions of 150-200 days.

If the articles are now gone you will have to either sign up with a premium provider, or wait for the torrrent.

  1. Apparently Easynews' service has been poor for the last 6 months (poor completion). Also there is no way to download incomplete files through the web interface. Those people using Easynews will need to get a binary newsreader (e.g. xnews for Mac, Grabit for PC) in order to be able to download these incomplete files.
  2. Once you've done that, run QuickPar or MacPar to check the RAR files. After the check is complete, you will be told how many blocks you need to be able to recover the full set of files.
  3. Let me know how many blocks you need and I'll post additional PAR2 files.

The 720p version floating about on the Net is from the Monsters HD broadcast, and it's the same widescreen transfer as the Ultimate Edition DVD.

I did a comparison between the 720p HDTV rip and the Book of the Dead version, here.

Interesting. There's almost no quality difference between the two versions (the HDTV is marginally more detailed); that said, the JPG file sizes do seem a bit low, maybe some detail is lost due to JPG compression?

Yeah, I guarantee the compression artifacts you'll see from an HD broadcast will be worse than those on the DVD.

Actually, much of the time an HDTV broadcast down-converted to DVD will look better than the official DVD (but not every time...)

Obviously compression artefacts in the source depend on whether it's MPEG-2 or h.264 encoding, original transport stream or re-encoded to fit on a DVD9.

But you should also consider that many official DVD releases suffer from EE, DVNR or simply shit transfers (a la the old Blade Runner release).

However, the main reason for the improvement is that DVDs are targeted to the lowest common denominator - those with interlaced CRT displays. Thus, the image on a DVD is usually filtered vertically to reduce the effect of "interline twitter" on these screens. An HDTV transfer will more often than not end up having more vertical detail.

Can't "un-blockquote" the top line when composing a post
Time

This bug occurs when replying to a post by selecting the "reply with quote" option.

It's impossible to insert a paragraph of your own at the top of your post, before the quoted text. Every time you click the blockquote icon to remove the quoting on the new text, it adds one more level of recursive quoting to the original text.

It's hard to descibe, but if you try it it's obvious what the problem is.

Another, possibly related, issue with quoting is that some actions cause the text to separate into indivual blocks. So, for example, you end up with:

... the film was usually cropped to 1:85:1 in cinemas...

Is this true? In See No Evil's DVD release notes, he says that ED was shown cropped to 1.66:1 for its premiere; and after that cinemas usually showed it full frame at 1.37:1.

As much as some might balk at the idea of another ED re-release, I'd wholly welcome a DVD or at least a Blu Ray with a new HD transfer that had the best of all worlds: as sharp and clear as the Elite, with a colour scheme closer to the Japanese LD (but not quite as dark and  blue-tinted), none of Raimi's mid-90s changes to the film, and an anamorphic 1:66:1 aspect ratio (which was what Raimi composed the film for during shooting anyway).

Although there's a BD release of ED2, there hasn't been an official release of ED yet as far as I know. (There is a pirate 720p version from an HDTV source around, but it's been cropped to 1.78:1 as you would expect).

So my 'ideal' version would be a Custom DVD as follows:

  • Video from Elite DVD (plus Anchor Bay DVD to restore the lightning/Cheryl shots) - for the best image quality and no burned-in Japanese subtitles - colour-matched to the HV laserdisc, then cropped and scaled to anamorphic 1.66:1 (a reasonable compromise for watching on a 16:9 TV without over-cropping to 1.78:1)
  • Audio options to include the original theatrical mono mix (has this ever appeared on a DVD release? If not, use the audio from the laserdisc) and remixed multi-channel Dolby Digital and/or DTS tracks.

Yes M I did get it,I will check it out now and let you know what I think, but from the screens you provided showing the differences,is it suppose to look so blue?

Well, apparently the DVD transfers for both the Anchor Bay and the Elite releases were supervised by Raimi himself. So you could argue that the brighter, warmer picture is what the director intended.

However, many fans think that the darker, colder colour grading on this old laserdisc release makes the film scarier.

Have a look at this thread:

So far three discs have been completed - one disc for ED1, and two for ED2.  The second ED1 disc and the AOD one will be finished in the coming months, so watch this space!

Cool, but where are the ones that are done?

I would send you a PM but I have tried that in the past,no response.

well here's hoping Moth3r gets them.

Thanks M for the one you already posted.

Did you manage to grab it DJ? Have you watched it yet, and if so what did you think?

Are you going to put this up on myspleen?

Some time ago djsmokingjam offered to send me the ED2 discs to put up on the newsgroups - I told him to hold off, as at the time I had issues with my ISP's traffic management policy. However, I've now resolved this so could upload if there's any interest.

That's great, Moth3r. I started doing my own little comparison last night and this certainly makes things alot easier.

While the difference in cropping is interesting, it doesn't really make that much of a difference. However, the higher contrast 'look' and colder colour grading has a massive effect on the visual atmosphere of the film.

For example:

^ Little Red Riding Hood visits her grandmother's cottage in the woods.

v An isolated cabin is besieged by an unseen evil force in the woods

Lowering the sound pitch of PAL movies without having to slow it down?
Time

Give more detail about your workflow, e.g.:

What did you use to extract the audio/video from the DVD in the first place?

Does Audacity read the AC3 file direct? What format does it output?

Does Windows Movie Maker read MPEG-2 video, or did you do any conversion first?

What format do you want your final AVI? (Xvid + MP3, or something else?)
