STAR WARS: EP V "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - 12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW
Time

While I prefer the prior clip (with the more whitish snow and heavier on the gray end of the spectrum to show nightfall), one must keep in mind that snow is still water. Being that the sky is blue due to light being refracted through various molecules (water being a chief component, or H2O), snow, while white especially during daytime as it reflects ALL colors (due to sunlight hitting it directly), at night it will reflect the same color as water does during the day - which is blue (short of other light sources reflecting off of it, such as street lamps and the like).

Of course, I could be completely wrong. I suggest those members who live in northern areas or are experiencing snowfall to simply go outside (away from street lights) to photograph some night shots, like these:

It appears that even if there is a bluish tint, it would still skew more towards the grey end of the spectrum (per the second picture).

Now this is still STAR WARS, so visual "coolness" or perception can mean more than reality, so in the end it really comes down to what looks the best to the human eye.

The 2004 DVD just had bad color correction......whereas Ady is moving time forward and making the scene closer to nightfall....it adds up to more or less the same result (for that particular scene) but the motivations are far different.

So.. is there a reason Ady decided not to use the sequence color timing as seen above?

Your top example is nearest in light conditions to the ESB:R image and there I see blueish snow and orangey skin.

What is different is a white light source aimed behind the standing figure which I can only assume was added by the photographer.

Ady could add a faux light source to the shot but it would create an issue of continuity which might throw up ugly lit shots either side of this one.

We really have to see these shots in context to appreciate them.

Ady is generous with his previews but it does lead to a lot of navel gazing, only some of which is of value (though it's impossible to tell which is unless you are working at the chalkface so it's best to keep eyeballing that belly button lint).

Ah boy... Bingo, I'm not going to get pulled into a back-and-forth. I stated fairly clearly that the reason the boy has normal skin tone is because the light source is above and behind the camera, lighting the boy and the ground immediately behind him. It's a fill light (similar to the scene in SCARFACE when Tony is making the call after the chainsaw scene on the pier. With the orange setting sun behind him, DePalma needed a fill light so you could see him and the background sunset. If there wasn't a fill light on the kid, he would be extremely dark as the picture was exposed to get the surrounding landscape).

Regardless, maybe it's just a thing to see in motion. I'm just saying I'm not sure if Luke would have such reddish skin tone if the surrounding ambient light is dark blue.

Even so, you can be insulting and call this navel gazing, but the entire point (I thought) of Ady posting such pictures was to get feedback and ideas. I can't make Ady change anything, but I can provide my personal perspective. That is all.

What is interesting is that it looks like EMPIRE:R is going back to the look of the 2004 dvd (at least with the specific "Luke sees Obi Wan" scene):

Blue is often used, particularly with snow, to indicate night, or twilight.

Siliconmaster482 said:

Nothing wrong with blue twilight colors as long as the skin tones aren't lost. Note how Luke's face isn't as weird and blue and washed out in Adywan's version.

Re:

You guys do understand that skin tone is determined by the ambient light around you, right?

I'm just saying that Ady's previous clip of that scene looked much better, as the amount of blue in the snow and the background should not result in Luke's face looking quite as orange like it does in the above image.

Here are a few examples:

http://kymkemp.com/media/old/2011/02/snow-play-at-dusk.jpg

(if you notice the plume of light behind the boy, it's from the artificial lighting to give normal skin tone to the boy. Even so, you can see the surrounding area in regards to ambient lighting. I also understand this is the basic gist of what Ady's going for in the above shot...

Like this:

I'm just wondering if Luke's face should have that much red/orange in it with that much ambient dark blue lighting around him)

Here is another example (it's during late day, but still):

That line from Bib Fortuna, "Bargain rather than fight? He's no Jedi." doesn't really make sense.

Surely the Jedi have a reputation for negotiating first and only fighting when necessary.

Keep in mind that this is before George decided to make the Jedis a bunch of pussies.

If you follow that the Jedi were essentially psychically enhanced galaxy cops who were modeled off of the cops who patrolled the streets in China (ala FIVE DEADLY VENOMS), then yes, it does make sense that Bibby would say Luke is "no Jedi" if the Jedi had a reputation of not so much rushing into a fight, but being direct and authoritarian, as well as being more than willing to use their psychic powers to unduly influence their suspects.

Remember: something had to have happened to have led to the Jedi's downfall... and yes, I am aware of the Prequels but no, I do not consider them a part of the OT canon.

Hmm, that's interesting... the animation segments are full frame, and the live action segments are 1.85:1. I would have thought Disney would have done the reverse (ala BRAINSTORM - expand the screen for the fantasy to heighten it, ala WIZARD OF OZ going from sepia to color).

Then again, it does make sense to the degree that the Brer Rabbit stories are a contained fiction created by Uncle Remus, thus the smaller frame for the animated stories in turn makes them more intimate.

I could possibly see some color enhancement (at least for the live action scenes, as the image above appears a bit washed out), but otherwise, I would say this is not only the best this has EVER looked but just the fact that the live-action scenes are widescreen make it pretty unique.

Update from Ady on Facebook:

With the news that Disney had purchased Star Wars, panic set in at first. But hopefully Disney will continue to leave fan edits alone.

- Adywan

Considering how many Marvel film fan edits are out there without Disney taking them all down, I think that as long as fan editors are still playing by the same rules (ie. not making a profit from their property) they will do what they've been doing, which is enjoying the free advertising from the fans.

I just say: post softly and carry a big hard drive.

ALIEN: REVISITED movie edit (* unfinished project *)
Time

If I had the money (and talent) to actually shoot a few extra scenes, here is how I figured the cocoon scene could have fit in:

(1) after she sees Lambert and Parker dead (and does the disgusted grimace), she collapses/sits on the floor outside the Parker/Lambert death room in the hallway, muttering under her breath "what am I going to do now?" (or something to that effect).

(2) To the left foreground of the screen image (with her going out of focus) you see an intercom and start to hear moaning, which starts muffled and low but starts to pick up.

(3) insert close up of Ripley looking up (on her eyes). This shot could be borrowed and manipulated when Ripley comes up the ladderwell later on.

(4) close up of the intercom (from the side) with Ripley entering the right, pressing some buttons. On the intercom is a screen, which she toggles a display of the ship. Using similar FX to the photo machine Deckard uses when scanning the photo in BLADE RUNNER, she sees the location of the sound coming from the landing leg on the other side of the ship (in the starboard engine).

(5) camera moves/swings slowly from left to right, starting from the left side of a corridor. When it reaches the mid point (looking straight down the corridor), you can already see Ripley more than halfway down running (so when the shot starts, you can hear her running down the corridor away from us, with the camera swinging around just to glimpse her running away).

(6) insert edit of the scene from the dvd (with Ripley being a bit more emotional), where you then edit her heading to the engine room to set the self destruct after this scene. Movie progresses as normal.

While it is not necessary, I always felt that Ripley and Dallas (per a previous version of the script) were lovers, and not long at that. With her having to kill Dallas (and knowing that there are definitely no other survivors), it would cement her determination to survive (which is what I assume is the point of the different acting in the cocoon scene on the blu-ray - it ends with Weaver/Ripley with a look of determination on her face) and her figuring there is no other decision left to be made.
______________________

Okay, now as far as the edit is concerned... I cannot say it is dead (as in I will never do it), but it won't be any time soon.

I am just having a really bad time wrapping my head around Adobe and Vegas and I just don't know if I have the ability to do this. I am still working on it, and recently acquired a 3D model of the Nostromo from this guy:

There is also this, and this.

And this:

Cinematics of Nostromo landing gear - Improved

I have no idea what to do with it, but I have it. Like I mentioned in a previous post, I will be focusing on a KILL BILL edit (titled KILL BILL AGAIN) and a WIZARD OF OZ edit using the DARK SIDE OF THE MOON / WISH YOU WERE HERE / and the PIGS song from ANIMALS to create a proper Pink Floyd alternate sound track using the blu-ray rips on the web for the video. This will at least get me feet wet, as the WIZARD edit will be primarily audio editing, and the KILL BILL edit will be much the same (mostly new music, some color timing alteration [specifically when the Bride attacks Bud at night - the scene will have a more 80's blue-grey hue] and an FX scene at the very end).

I never really had a problem with the old one. Personally, if anything, I would just update the graphics on the old design to retain consistency.

But if you wanted to play with alternate or even radical new intros for Ady, here are some possible ideas:

(1) being that these are edits of films in the late 1970's and early 1980's, maybe make the graphics reflect that (like the Bolson Media Company logo in the beginning).

(2) design a logo similar to what could be done in the 1980's. Not so much new age-y or cheesy, but what you could see 20th century fox or Warners doing if they did a recreation of their logo.

(3) Adrian is in the UK, so maybe make a play with that (the shape of Britain changes into Adywan, like an accordion).

(4) then again, you could always do the logo like the first New Line Cinema logo.

As for myself, I would just slightly update the ANH:R logo.

I think Yoda should always be on Dagobah, even in the prequels, and the Jedi would sometimes go there to be trained.

Bingowings said:

If that were so wouldn't Palpatine send his troops right there and kill him?

It makes more sense if nobody knows where Yoda is in the PT (he has become an exile for reasons best known to himself).

Maybe Obi-Wan finds out at the end of the PT and lands there to seek guidance.

Maybe because Yoda is so powerful he could bring down/tear apart Star Destroyers (you know, like the lesser powered unknown Jedi you play in THE FORCE UNLEASHED)? Hell, maybe that's the real reason the Death Star was created - to destroy Yoda.

Remember: Yoda is essentially the equivalent of Pai Mei, the demon master. He lives out in the woods; you can't find him unless he wants to be found; he appears as an old man, but can do supernatural things; etc. Palpatine could have either known or finding Yoda's location could have been a major plot point (the Jedi hinge on Yoda's training and existence). It could have even been the ulterior reason for building a clone army. That doesn't work so he builds a few Death Stars.

Maybe Palpy was a rejected student who wanted to match or supplant Yoda as "master of the universe" and has been seeking revenge for all these years. STAR WARS is in no way derivative of Shaw Brothers martial art movies, in which nothing like that ever happens.

Just to add something to this little aspect at this point - a while back I was lucky enough to get a screenshot preview of the way that adywan intends to re-do his version of the 'Torture Droid's needle.

Although I can't divulge it's description, I'd just like to confirm that most people should absolutely love his latest version! It looks terrific and I'm looking forward to seeing it in motion. :)

Yeah, I got to see it too. It's pretty sweet! In fact, as much as I hate to be the guy who goes around ruining all the surprises, I just can't help sharing the screenshot with the rest of you. Enjoy:

But will the droid now say "INTERROGATE! INTERROGATE!" in a high-pitched, electronically modulated british voice?

Well... let's face it: the whole storytime with C3P0 was to make the Ewoks cute and endearing so as to make kids go "Awww!" and rush out to the stores to buy their very own Teddy Ruxpi... Ewok doll. I mean "action figure".

You know, I'm surprised (now that I think about it) that Lucas did NOT rip off Teddy Ruxpin and make an animatronic Ewok for kids to play with. Think about the fun times a kid could have had with a dead-eyed Ewok speaking Chineskimese.

AD1 sounds like a steak sauce :P

Yes, but will it make my steaks taste like STAR WARS?

Bingo: you mention this off-topic "free to bitch" page. Is there a link?

Ady-1: like one of the previous posters, I too feel that arguing about the name change is superficial compared to the edits coming out. AD1 is fine with me, as I'm sure it's fine with you, as you created it. It makes sense to do something to credit the others who are helping you, and if it means your independent incorporation of interns and non-paid staff work under the banner of a steak sauce, then so be it.

Now can we get back to talking about STAR WARS please?
