I don't know if Ady has done anything about the crappy Vader hologram

Is there the possibility of just replacing the shot with Vader on a viewscreen? When you think about it, it is rather silly to have a smurf-sized Vader (or anyone) on what looks like a cigarette plug-in hologram add-on...

not to mention, is that holo (8-track) deck located near the right arm of the left AT-AT driver (as in, shouldn't there be a joystick in that area)? The area on the right side looks like the center of the console (the white bar above and behind Vader is the same as the glowing blue bar at the driver's shoulder level below):

Now I know someone is going to say that the mini-holodeck could be located in the center, between the joysticks (by the green dot).... the problem is that you should see the other joystick on the left side on the 1st image above, not to mention Veers looks off to his left (or right side of the screen), as opposed to straight below him, which would also be underneath his periscope.

Not to also mention, but wouldn't this give Vader a skyscraper sized shot of Veers "below the belt" region?

Imagine someone coming in on Vader's conversation on that one...

(maybe you could take the scene in JEDI where Vader is holding his arm up to defend himself from Luke's attack and make a tiny hologram version to account for his "view" of Veers).

Info Wanted: Has anyone done a "Look Ma..no wires!" edition of the Superman movies?
Time

That's something I almost wished the movie companies would do, ie. use CGI to get rid of the zippers and wires in cases where you weren't supposed to see them to begin with.

Case in point: the 1956 DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL. When Gort picks up the love interest, on the blu-ray you can see tons of wires holding her up. On top of that, there are still a few scenes where you can see the zipper. It would be interesting to see someone take this (and other films like George Pal's WAR OF THE WORLDS) and not so much replace the FX with something more modern, but just get rid of the wires, background mismatches with the set, bluescreen issues, etc.

After watching this, I'd have to say that, regardless of the additions of the explosions and the like, the scene with the rebel saying "c'mon!" and the following scene with the rebels running out of the trenchs and the snowspeeders flying overhead could be cut and replaced with rebels simply cheering or even take Rogue Squad to film a "rebels cheering in the trenches" scene. To have them run out and then get killed by either the shrapnel or laserfire from other AT-ATs makes them look pretty stupid.

Let's put this into context: what would soldiers in WW2 do after a german tank is successfully taken out from say a planted mine from a soldier crawling underneath? Get out of their foxholes and expose themselves to the other tanks, or cheer, keep their cover, and then start arming themselves with grenades and planning on repeating the same successful tactic?

Alien Appendix #7: The ALIEN SAGA Archive (Released)
Time

Funny, I feel the complete opposite when it comes to BLADE RUNNER and ALIEN... at least with BLADE RUNNER we got 4 versions of the movie to choose from. It would be interesting to see if the color timing was changed for the 1991 DC and the original theatrical release... the Final Cut is a given that things were going to be changed throughout, and personally I was very pleased with how it came out.

ALIEN on the other hand just came across like Ridley didn't give a sh*t and just slapped something out just to make some extra money. The thing is, I never really noticed the scenes above being that too far removed from the original color timing.. it was specifically:

(1) all of the shots with the Space Jockey had a washed-out blue tint

(2) when Ripley first enters the cargo room (when they are looking for Jonesy), it looks natural... yet when Brett enters the room, there is this godawful copper tint over EVERYTHING, where it may as well be "copper and white" as opposed to a color film.

(3) then, as soon as Brett enters the landing leg room, there is that damn "washed-out, blue tint" over everything, which shows up again when

(4) the Alien attacks Parker and Lambert. So essentially the 2 scenes where the Alien appears (other than the end) the details and colors of the Alien are washed-out and bluish.

On top of that, the hydraulic arm lowering the Nostromo model is still visible during the landing scene, and you still have the "disappearing coffee mug" when the computer starts up in the beginning... as far as I am concerned, Ridley Lucasfied ALIEN by doing such a half-assed "special edition" version.

I wonder how it would come out if someone did a PASSION OF THE CHRIST version of AVATAR, to the degree of what Mel originally wanted to do by not having english subtitles for the spoken language and let the acting and the story "speak for the characters" so to .... um, speak.

Regardless, I look forward to see what you've done with the edit!

Just for s's and g's, what if someone did a "depressing 70's edition" and took the bomb explosion from RAMBO (recoloring the foliage to the more bluish tinge) to signify the bomb being dropped (even if the shuttle gets destroyed) on the Tree of Life? I know it would be hard to edit in scenes from other movies, as AVATAR is 100% CGI, but still... I can wonder...

BTW, if the subtitles are removable, would it be possible to rewrite the Na'vi dialogue? Also, would it be possible to edit out the scenes in the briefing room showing the blatant rednecks sitting in the crowd?

RIJIR:

I never really had a problem with the workprint you created, since you pretty much defined it "as" a workprint. Granted, better quality would be nice, but I can understand your angle in that if you had the great PQ for the regular scenes, with the extra material inserted within, the EM would stand out quite a bit. By doing it the way you did, it all blended together and it all came across like something Ridley would play for the guys in the dark room.

One of the scenes that for some reason is the most memorable to me is when the chestburster is coming out of Kane, there is a quick shot of just his feet moving rapidly from the trauma (I love shots like that in horror movies; no need to show blood and guts, yet shots like that convey the trauma and horror just as well - kind of like the scene in JC's THE THING when Gary is carried off in the darkness), as well as the full Veronica Cartwright "blood in the face" scene (what is funny is that what you see in the movie is nowhere NEAR the amount of blood that hits her, as there is a second squirt that damn near covers her face and she immediately falls flat on her back!).

Good thread Monroville! For years Aliens was the only movie from the series i could stand to watch, and the Pulse rifles dont sound wimpy! they sound like Pulse rifles! just wouldnt be the same any other way :p

I understand where you're coming from, to the degree that it's what you grew up with. Personally, they sound weak to me; they do not sound like an actual gun (there is no real bass with them). If and when I get to ALIENS: REVISITED, this will be one of the changes.

Anyway, but recently - maybe because im getting older... i dont know, I like less action orientated movies now, the slower pace and claustrophic type atmosphere of alien and Ridley Scott's functional/artistic (if thats the term) style used. I just downloaded Alien Appendix 2 cos its like supposed to be the longest version and I'll get a pizza or something this evening and watch it in the dark! :P

(ooh yeah! do i know how to have fun or what! lol )

Bingowings you're just a human (?) encyclopedia on everything Alien related, can you recommend a good making of book?

You will like ALIEN: APPENDIX 2 (or is it 3?): some really interesting added scenes that I have NEVER seen anywhere!

And as far as being an encyclopedia on ALIEN, just ask me - ALIEN was my STAR WARS (not that SW wasn't big for me, as I was 7 when I first saw it, but it took me 7 years after ALIEN came out before I could finally see it - up to then, I had only the barest of scraps of info to figure out just what the hell this movie my parents were keeping me from seeing was all about).

As far as books to read on everything you need to know about ALIEN:

Info & Ideas: ESB and ROTJ Wishlist
Time

Bingo: I really like the idea of Anakin/Vader being "the other". Again, I can go one way or the other with Leia being Luke's sister, though it still feels tacked on to try and top the "I am your father" bit from EMPIRE. I personally would still edit out Ben's appearance on Dagobah and end the scene with Luke looking worried with one of the segway music cues kicking in (ala along the lines of when Luke found his aunt and uncle dead) and leave it for Luke to figure out through the Force and reveal what he knows/discovers to the audience as he reveals it to Leia (not to mention, it would be more shocking to find out somewhere near the end of the second act right before everyone is about to meet their fates, than have exposition Ben lay it on the audience before the story really starts to progress).

Why Leia couldn't have "heard" Luke at the end of EMPIRE simply because they have a close bond either as possible lovers (or love interests) or just because of all the stuff they went through beforehand is beyond me.

Granted, Obi Wan would have less "face time", but is it really critical to the story that Obi Wan spells out everything for Luke/The Audience? Also keep in mind that Ben's appearances dwindle from movie to movie as Luke grows up from a kid to an adult - the main point being that in order for Luke to become a true Jedi, he has to finish his final test/confrontation ALONE without any outside help. It would also allude to the "rogue's gallery of Jedi ghosts" at the end as all variations of father figures for Luke, as they all had a hand in him growing up not just as a Jedi but as a human being (hence a good reason that they, and not Qui Jon or any other Jedi, appear in ghostly form). Yoda's and Ben's appearances SHOULD be extremely limited, as JEDI is the movie where Luke has to become an adult in the sense that when 20 and 30 year olds become parents, one of the first things they learn is self-sacrifice (be it money, time, freedom to simply be lazy or have fun). Granted, Luke does not have any children of his own, but if he is to reboot the Jedi and the Republic, he is essentially taking the mantle of being the "founding father" of the New Republic and has to prove that he won't give in to the same hate and evil his father and Palpatine gave into. Thus, when we see Anakin (as played by Sebastian Shaw), Obi Wan and Yoda, they are all giving their collective nod of approval at seeing their collective son grow up.
______________________

On another note, isn't one of the main faults of JEDI the lack of urgency or a real threat to the main characters? Be it when Luke finds his aunt and uncle dead, or Luke is in the Falcon at the end of EMPIRE, both scenes made me feel at least like you had no idea what the character could do to escape the situation - I was genuinely worried. Other than maybe the Rancor scene, I can't say I really felt that watching JEDI.

______________

From an overall editing point of view, I would still start JEDI out on Tatooine, and leave the introduction of the DS2 when the Emperor arrives (where you could do the SD overshadowed by the Executor, which is then overshadowed by the DS2). The opening shot with Vader landing is pretty redundant, as we see essentially the same shot when the Emperor arrives, not to mention it "blows the wad" right off the bat by revealing the Death Star to the audience in the first shot.

I would consider changing the opening scrawl to describe the rebels suspect the Emperor has a plan to "destroy the rebellion once and for all", but do not know the details, with the second part of the scroll "with Luke finishing his training, he heads to Tatooine to rescue his long, lost friend..." (or something to that effect). The bottom line being that there is no mention of the Emperor building yet another Death Star. That way when we see it (much less if you take the Executor reveal from EMPIRE, but extend it to have the DS2 overshadow it, which leads to the Emperor departing the Executor and to the shuttle bay per the original JEDI scene), it is a definite shock.

That way the DS2 is at least something of a surprise and we see it only after the "B" story is wrapped up. I would try to eliminate as much exposition and edit around the actual facial acting the actors do (like mentioned before, rather than have Leia comment on Luke revealing to her that she is his sister, keep her quiet and only show her expression so her face and her eyes tell us how she is feeling as opposed to Carrie Fisher literally telling us).

Apocalypse Now - Workprint (now available) (Released)

I have to agree with "buttergun"'s review when comparing AN:R(edux) with AN:O(riginal) V(ersion)

While it was nice to see the extra scenes remastered and integrated back into the film, why we did not see the scenes that would have been the most interesting or integral to making the story more surreal:

(1) the extended helicopter travel sequence,
(2) Dennis Hopper's death scene and especially
(3) Willard's approach to Kurtz' temple compound (though Buttergun is wrong in that it is a Cambodian guard that holds the child up, of which Willard impales them both with a spear).

p.s. whats this green laser debate about? Did I just re-open an old wound?

A long, long time ago in this very forum, there was a debate that lasted all of a few posts where it was suggested by somebody to possibly change the AT-AT lasers to green (since all of the other Imp heavy weapons were green). I don't remember how that turned out...

And cutnshut: you know how these things turn out... your timer will freeze, the person who was supposed to watch over the timer will forget (or freeze) and you'll be waking up beside Ashley Williams with a surprised look on your face.

Did I hear someone say "green laser debate"?

Yoda: I like where you're going with this (though I can deal with the original "as-is"), especially the "R-type" styled AT-AT lasers powering up in order to take out the shield generator (maybe could also add a Vermithrax style audio powering up sound as well as the tips of the guns glowing hotter as the energy builds up). The AT-AT "shields" collapsing was also nice in how quick and subtle it was (enough to give the impression needed).

How would it look to show lasers reflecting/bouncing off the AT-AT as well (not just absorbing into the legs and joints)?

Really cool! A few points:
(1) is that the probot pod wreckage at 1:52 (when Han is doing his first scan)? Don't know if that was added or was already there and never noticed, but cool all the same (would make sense Han would start looking for Luke at his last reported location)

(2) should there be some added shadows to some of the snowspeeder scenes at the end (from 5:25 to 6:30)? It seems the only time you see the snowspeeder cast a shadow is the scene directly before the one where it flies over Han (from 6:25 to 6:27).

Regardless, can't wait till next year to see the whole thing!

Avatar and Politics in general (mild spoilers)
Time

Consider these points in regards to scientists, the environment and everything:

(1) scientists (much less anyone else) instantly start to become biased (even if it is subconsciously) the moment their work becomes funded by money - if they want the money to fund their research, they have to put up with things like:

- developing super weapons for ulterior purposes/ developing boring, practical technological tools when they WANT to design and develop super weapons.. I mean, wonders of the world.
- skewing test results towards what the funders want to see so they can keep the funding coming in.
- if said scientist is smart, they will keep an "ace up the sleeve", ie email correspondence, the key/remote/kill switch to said ultra-mega-killing machine, or your usual black mail or copy of the invention. If the scientist is NOT that smart (or lucky or politically savvy), then we know what usually happens....

hint: he didn't used to look like this when he first got the job...

have we not learned this in movies since the 1950's?

(2) Sluggo and co.: you are correct in that neither side really seem to care about what they are saying. Republicans could have expanded coal and oil production (or at least built more refineries, as one of the biggest reasons gas/ natural gas/ diesel cost so much is because we have very few refineries to process the oil/ ore), whereas Democrats could have begun creation of nuclear fission/ fusion, pushed the lunar mining project (to mine the fuel for said fusion reactors), develop solar roofing shingles and building windows to turn neighborhoods and entire cities into solar power plants, etc. Yet we have been talking about this since Tesla (and that was what, 1920's?)!

(3) in regards to pollution, the simple fact is that the Earth pollutes itself FAR more in one year from any random volcanic explosion than the entirety of the Industrial Revolution (from the late 1800's to this very second)..

NOT TO MENTION:
the worse humans could ever do is return the Earth back to its prime/first state of molten hot magma. People tend to forget that the Earth is 99% solid and liquid rock, and the "environment" is the millimeter thin skin (or fungus growing on the bark, if you will). If environmentalists were a little more honest about their message ("Save the Humans") and spent their time AND MONEY creating the alternative energy sources as opposed to wasting their time bitching about stuff they have no intention of fixing (see Al Gore, Earth Liberation Front, James Cameron, etc.), people would take them more seriously.

Oh yeah: and it's always the smart thing to do to create the replacement energy source BEFORE you start anything like "cap and trade" on what you are currently using.

Or in the words of George Carlin and Penn and Teller...

STOP THE EVIL OF DI HYDROGEN MONOXIDE and the excessive urination it causes!
