The Standalone Star Wars Films
Time

A movie about Palpatine, no?

Would love to see stand alone movies that at some point cross the same timelines seen in the PT in specially key moments (this would only be possible with the PT, as the actors age still matches their looks by 2005). For instance, in a movie about Palpatine, we could see new personal angles for Anakin's fall and what happens with Windu in his office, etc.

It would be interesting to me at least, to have that overlapping of same situations in different films from different perspectives and serving different stories, like in the Saw saga

No, that seems fine to me?

Make this exercise, put a little human figure next to the fighter acording to its dimensions, then move it to the bigger ship and you mighgt see that the fighter's too big, or the ship is too small.

Really, prefer the edgy style of TCW to this childish lego-like curves they've put to every ship and design

Could you show us, with screencaps, these childish curves?

I guess it's allright as long as you fear this stormtrooper.

Or even if you don't see how obvious the scale issues are in this image

Not to mention the lack of bump textures, nor grebble, it all looks plain as far as 3d models go.

Even here, while a classic angle from the movies, it's completely unjustified for a 3d animation series. I can understand there were issues with the perspective back in the 80's that made them force it in order to have an easier composition, but it's not the case today, and it's completely wrong to still have the TIE fighters be so big next to a cruiser.

It looks like Lego to me. It's a purely perceptive thing, and I can rationalise the reasons. I can even find graphical support to sustain what these images are telling me. And it will still look Lego and childlike to me.

Star Wars: Episode VII to be directed by J.J. Abrams **NON SPOILER THREAD**

I'd rather have it be a mistery/thriller plot involving some elements from the past, thus having the investigator (Luke) revisit places from the OT, probable looking for something Vader left behind. On his way, he could find young children strongly sensitive to the Force. As a secondary story, the New Republic is being reorganised.

And I strongly believe in the end it will be something like that, because it's the first movie of a new series and they will have Vader be present somehow as a reassurement. They won't be totally revolutionary. Besides having Luke get into his father's life is character development and fan service at the same time, and above everything, it would be a movie middle-scale as the OT is, not the super-grand-epic-213612876389127 warriors-running-the-same-way the PT is, and full of nostalgia for the Empire era.

I'd say the mechanism is the same, with superficial differences. What I found most annoying however is the inmediate seriousness that takes over both characters (ObiWan and  Yoda) the exact moment their identities are revealed.

Too much sensei atmosphere can make a great master out of anything... but it's my perception of course.

Sorry, but that doesn't work at all. It changes the emotional impact of the scene. The PT music conveys sadness, almost melodramatic. Not what this scene is about at all. But it does show just how important it is to have the correct piece of music for a scene.

PT is in general melodramatic. At least it happened to Aalenfae and I to realise that while most people thinks that those movies fail to be dark and should be darker, it might be the exact opposite way.

Objectively, there's nothing tragic in a guy falling to the Darkside (PT), but definetely there IS something tragic in discovering that your father is a murderer. So from a certain point of view the OT is the real tragedy of the saga. And the most iconic, the most tragic moment of the saga, which is the one discussed here works perfectly with a dark, menacing qeue, which never happens to sound "tragic", just threatening.

Dark doesn't mean sad. Dark means Evil.

It's good to take note about these details, especially when PT:R is a certain fact in a not so distant future

ROTJ:R, ANH:R (HD) and I, II & III will all be worked on simultaneously. No word yet on if they will be released all together or one at a time.

I read about the intention to work on I, II & III simultaneously on doubleofive's 'Wordpress' news updates, but I didn't realise that adywan was *also* planning to undertake those at the exact same time as his 'ROTJ:R' and 'ANH:R(HD)' edits too...

Which makes things even more incredible muddyknees, if that's the case!

That's gonna make for a heap of new threads and ideas for us all to follow when that time comes, although I suppose there only needs to be a single one to cover updates/suggestions/'Frink'isms etc. for the I, II & III edits themselves - if that's judged preferable to three separate threads.

Lots to look forward to then, and it'll be a job just to keep up with it all. :)

I think it's the wisest decission to approach those four at the same time. ANH is a stand alone film. It was thought to be so. And ESB could be considered the one that develops every possible plotline suggested in ANH. ROTJ, however, is the closure and it necessarily links not just to EPIV and EPV but to the long past I, II and III as well.

It could be said that by working on the rest of the revisited saga at the same time, Adywan reassures that he won't be held captive in PT:R by the decissions that by action or omission he made in ROTJ:R or vice-versa.

And it's a titanic challenge to do this, so all my respects for him.

Ady, my 11 year old son just made a keen observation. If you're going to go back and revisit the Prequel Trilogy, what are you going to do if the Sequel Trilogy also sucks? I mean, what's your overall goal here? To fix ALL Star Wars films or just the first 6? Hell, there's at least 5 coming out by 2019. That's a whole lot of roto work.

Let's look at it this way. The original plan was to fix the simple errors in the OT and hopefully fix the story, acting, and entire feel of the PT which would have fixed the entire Star Wars Saga. But now the reality of the Saga has changed, we're getting 5 movies in 5 years. It took almost 30 years to get that many films previously. My question, and it's one that's bothered me for years while following your work, is this: If the Sequel Trilogy only needs minimal work compared to the OT, would you consider working on those instead? I'm hypothesizing of course that they'll need work (lens flare overload perhaps). So that's my idea, either delay or abandon altogether your plans to fix the OT. I don't truly know if you have some impossibly good ideas that you feel could actually make the OT good movies or just movies that suck less than they do currently. If you can't truly make them into good movies, then what's the point? Seriously, how in the world can you make Hayden Christensen do anything but have a laughable performance? I've seen almost every fan-edit and he sucks ass no matter what .I have little doubt that VII, VIII, IX will be better than I, II, III and will need less work and I'm fairly confident they'll start out as good movies. You won't be working from a broken narrative.

You started this, what?... almost 9 years ago? I've been around for 7 or 8 of those years and the whole time I've never once wanted to see you work on the PT and I'm a huge fan of your work. I instead always wanted a trilogy cut from TCW tv show with an entirely new narrative. I believe you'd be pretty good at something like that.

Just my 2 cents. I hope you at least think about it. We all care about the OT so much more than anything else and once you're finished with those, I just hope you and the ever-expanding crew of yours choose the best way to spend the time, effort, and resources.

I really hope you meant the PT ;)

But seriously, i won't be touching the new films. Revisited is only going to be a 6 film saga. They are not being made to fit in with the new films either. It would be pointless. I may change something in the PT that then is referenced in the ST, so i would have to wait until every new Star Wars film is completed before i worked on any of the other films and that includes ROTJ.  ROTJ will round off the saga. Once thee final film in the Revisited saga is complete then that is it for me. There will be no more edits from me. Hell, by the time i get to finish this saga it will probably be time for me to retire anyway.

However, the new SW movies that aren't labeled as episodes, the spinoffs, could be a good source for your PT:R in case you need any more footage. I think that given the extense lapse until PT:R is out (let alone ROTJ:R), it would be convenient to keep an eye on those hypothetical movies.

I think it would be nice to see heavy war rifles in Endor. Like the one Han uses in the DS in ANH, which was taken as a model for all the PT clonetrooper guns.

Might not be a need for interior corridors of the DS where the Empire is clearly in numeric advantage, same applies to Bespin, but i think they would be logical in Endor. Actually it's not that much a size issue but a weird thing nowadays to see that strange shooting pose from the sixties and seventies. Shooting from the waist was cool for spies and cowboys, but not for a trained army.

Aalenfae's PREQUEL TRILOGY (Heavily delayed - computer exploded)
Time

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbFqWtaITck&feature=youtu.be

Here's a first attempt I made a couple of days ago for brainstorming purposes of what has been developed in the Revisited saga thread.

I'll quote a post I made after the idea that is tried to be developed currently by Aalenfae (if I don't get it wrong) as general insight for Anakin's character

I think Anakin should go down Harvey Dent's route. However, i'll make the point after some differences between Star Wars and Rings.

At some point, Anakin's story is the exact opposite to Frodo's story. Lucas set up an order where anakin fell because he was too human. GL wanted the jedi order to be morally more than humans, he didn't want them to commit to anybody, nor to help or show compassion, not even to marry.

While the Jedi keep this rigid behaviour, everything develops just fine and the galaxy is in order. But then comes Anakin, who acts like a normal person, chooses his wife over his duty, and so he falls (and the republic falls) because of their forbidden love. Cleary it is wrong for him to be and act just as a common folk would.

Now take LOTR. The ultimate success in Frodo's mission comes from love under the form of pity, because he spared Gollum's life, because Faramir let Frodo go when he wasn't supposed to, etc. In a general way, we are trained (culturally trained) to identify ourselves with characters that show some human scale while heroes are determined, heroes have goals of grandeur and stay on their path. Characters we all emphatise with are the ones that are set in a path that wasn't theirs, and solve things the best they can (Han solo, anyone?)

I'd make a hero of Anakin if I were to make these movies, because that's what's wrong with him. I wouldn't want anyone to like him but to admire him. Anakin should be incorruptible, the perfect soldier, always proceeding by the book. This blind commitment to civil duty, this inflexibility is what puts him just two steps away from being a monster. He should fall because he denies his human emotions, not because he follows them.

In the end, he falls because the institutions of the republic are rotten. this is the key: The jedi are monsters which is why Luke's Jedi Order wouldn't be just a copy of the preceeding one. You can't prevent humans from being humans, this should be the real tragedy of Anakin Skywalker. He was raised to be something noone can be. And he took it all too seriously.

Again: it's the Harvey Dent route, from hero to vilain in two minutes, when he realises he's let so much go and it wasn't worthy. That's the first step to messianism.

And at this point I believe it's the only feasible way to make Anakin's repentine turn work.

In AOTC he looses his mother because of duty. He gets too late to Tattoine. In ROTS, by setting the scene when he's alone in the council chamber crying BEFORE he denounces Palpatine to Windu, it will be shown that he is RENOUNCING to Padmé for the sake of the republic, and he cries because it's his mother chapter all over again (he is clearly proceeding like a monster at that point, no one would give up the love of his live for political stability). So when for some reason he gets to the chancellor's office and windu is clearly not proceeding by right or law, the messianic I me mine Vader is gets to the surface (the jedi are as corrupt as the Sith, and I'm the only one who can save this Republic)

Aalenfae and I are trying to reach some sort of solution for the Tattooine sequences in AOTC, though it might be difficult to make it work. The general idea is to leave Tattooine for the end of the movie where clearly a timeleap is established.

Basically it would be implied that Anakin has returned to Tattooine before/has been in contact with his mother all these years, and he knows where she's living currently.

The conflict now would be duty vs feelings. Anakin would be dreaming all throughout the movie about his mother, however he constantly denies his emotions and keeps being attached to his misions. By the end of the movie, when released from assignment, he goes to Tattooine and finds out he was too late and Shmi is dead.

There are some things and mentions in the movie that can't be erased without major changes and reshooting. However, if reduced to the minimum, they pass from being key, to anecdotic.

Aalenfae's PREQUEL TRILOGY (Heavily delayed - computer exploded)

I think that it's possible to make them look as friends in both scenes, but the cost is to loose the general seriousness. I don't think that's a problem mainly because after the scene obiwan proves that he wasn't actually serious (you focus on the negative, he was pleased to see us). Besides, OT has a humorous note in very key moments too, think of Yoda reveal.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKPTM4m3IAI

I was short on time so I didn't take care of Jarjar, just focus in the elevator scene and then when they're sitted

The video has more than one interpretation and it's likely that obiwan sort of pushes him to fancy padmé. However, even if dominant in the situation, Anakin would be loosing this thing of I PROMISE you as if it was actually something important. Aalenfae's last take was down that route and the result was quite amazing.

In the end it can be done, but I don't know if it should be done to change the mood of the scene.

Sadly it's difficult to have Bernini and Borromini both in the same team, opossite convictions and methods of work. Sadly because most of us would have loved to see what would come up of that collaboration, specially when the revisited saga reached those movies that are more open to changes.

It's pretty much a generic CGI dance off.

I think it could be edited down to a few minutes where we see Obi-Wan face down a former pupil and defeat him without ever knowing who he was.

I hate the duel as well. If I were ever to make an edit, I'd just make them leave, quite the fighting at some early point, like two honorable warriors who respect each other.

When I left you I was but a learner.

Not really, but to give Obi Wan a second apprentice would just mess the OT in a worse way. Because at the end of the day, we've seen Anakin's fall anyways, and we've seen obi wan fight him.

Even if all the signals pointed that Vader was this second character, we would have presenced Anakin not being as great as Obi Wan described him. We'd even know that ObiWan is lying because if Anakin dies at mustafar, it wasn't vader who killed him...

That would make the ESB moment be a meh, it's not X, it's the other bad guy turned evil in III.

PT set up a story which is far from this possibility with the material we've got.

Besides there's great potential in the story to make it a real tragedy, really.

Star Wars: Episode VII to be directed by J.J. Abrams **NON SPOILER THREAD**

I think this movie should forge a new bond with the fans and with the saga, a visual guarantee claiming that not much things will change. I bet they'll be rather conservative when it comes to inventing new designs, characters, planets, factions. They own the franchise, they said a movie is to be made every two years, and they have no limit in the structure of the story now, we don't even know if the saga will still be ordered by trilogies.

Seriously I doubt they will take a big leap forward from the very first star wars movie they make. Maybe it's just me rationalizing, since I think that star wars would be hardly recognizable if the figure of Darth Vader isn't there, otherwise being a constant and neverending Phantom Menace, star warsy but just not it.

I wish they set Luke in a quest for some lost object from the old days which finding would tie some knots between past and future. Would be a nice excuse for giving the original characters a proper farewell.

Yes, that could be a point about how well the stances look, but i don't think the scale and amount of rooms could be justified by it. Even goblin town looks bigger than Moria from FOTR.

That said, the most outstanding case would be Dale looking as big as Minas Tirith. Speaking of which, the architecture and materials used in Dale look more mediterranean, and more southern than those from the south of middle earth.

I really hope he doesn't work very much. I think it's key to this movie to withold as many intact elements from the OT as possible. Mostly imperial ships, they shouldn't be tinkered with. After seeing new designs in every movie since 99, a little rest and continuity would be welcome.

I'm sure a solution can be found inside the story to explain that, like military technology didn't need to be further developed in peaceful times and therefore the fleet was conserved.
