If Star Wars flopped....

The story takes place between SW and ESB. It was written by Alan Dean Foster, and the cover art was done by Ralph McQuarrie. I haven't read it for many years, but I remember it was pretty good:

"Luke Skywalker expected trouble when he volunteered to follow Princess Leia on her mission to Circarpous to enlist their Rebel underground in the battle against the empire. But the farm boy from Tatooine hadn't counted on an unscheduled landing in the swamplands of Mimban...hadn't counted on any of the things they would find on that strange planet.

Hidden on this planet was the Kaiburr crystal, a mysterious gem that would give the one who possessed it such powers over the Force that they would be all but invincible. In the wrong hands, the crystal could be deadly. So Luke had to find this treasure and find it fast.

Accompanied by R2-D2 and C-3PO - his faithful droids - Luke and the Princess set out for the Temple of Pomojema...and a confrontation deep beneath the surface of an alien world with the most fearsome villian in the galaxy!"

Info Wanted: 70mm Film Cel Scans (good reference or pointless?)
Time
I have over a hundred of those cels myself (from all 3 films). I've been collecting them since Willitts Designs put them out in 1995. You can still find plenty of them on eBay- no two are alike. They were made from 70mm interpositives. The SW ones are pretty plentiful, followed by ESB. They made far fewer of the ROTJ ones, and good scenes from that film are harder to find. I think they're one of the best Star Wars collectibles that have ever been made. I had to stop collecting them because I was starting to get a little nuts with them...LOL!

They're probably the best color reference you're going to find, as far as what the original films looked like.

I was pretty disappointed with Natalie Portman's performance, especially in TPM, where she had that very odd accent (only while she was wearing the Kabuki makeup, of course!). I can't blame her totally, though. The material she had to work with was poor, and God knows she didn't get any help from GL's direction, though she does make Carrie Fisher's performances downright riveting in comparison.

Same here- I couldn't believe that whole scene. It was embarrassingly bad. That, and Yoda fighting Christopher Lee. AOTC is the worst of the PT, IMO.

This is interesting:

"I hope you will have a chance to see these first versions of the movies on DVD when they come out. Those who have been communicating their opinions and beliefs online have not seen the DVDs."

I was thinking more of somebody outside Lucasfilm. There's nothing John Singh can do at this point, and I'm sure he's already gotten tons of emails.

Maybe a newspaper or magazine or TV station- somebody who might want to do a story on the whole controversy, or maybe the American Film Institute (AFI). Just browsing all of the contact info in this thread alone- there are tons of options.

And both sets have the final battle in CAV.
Not on my SW "faces" LDs- ALL 3 sides are CLV (same for my ESB and ROTJ "faces" sets).

Now, my '97 SE LD set has a CAV/CLV mix, but my '95 "faces" LDs are definitely all CLV.

I don't think it's solely the fact that the Faces set is CLV, that is responsible for the lower image quality. Though I wouldn't know exactly what is. So you have them yourself, don't you notice any difference?

I can't say that I have seen any difference. However, I only have one LD player (a Pioneer CLD-D703), so I can't do an A/B comparision. Also, I prefer the "faces" set due to the fact that they only have 2 side breaks, and show no sign of laser-rot (which my DC set does- on ROTJ, and there are some suspicious speckles on the other 2 films as well), so I hardly watch the DC set except for the bonus features.

Not me- I love that scene. It's the only new scene from the SEs that I like. To me, it makes Biggs' death more meaningful. The scene is short enough to keep it from slowing down the pace of the film, but long enough to establish the fact that they were close friends. I don't think the Tatooine scenes need to be in the film to support it.

I thought the "faces" set had the same picture as the DC set. Are you talking about the fact that the "faces" set was CLV and the DC set was CAV? I know CAV is supposed to have a slightly better picture in some cases, but I have both sets and I honestly don't see a difference, aside from the fact that some of my DC discs are slowly starting to develop laser-rot (that particular set is notorious for that), which the "faces" discs aren't.

FWIW, I found this on the Laser Guru site:

Q:"I was hoping you could educate me a bit on PAL laserdiscs.

Was there a THX widescreen release of the original SW Trilogy in PAL, similar to the "faces" set here in the US? Or alternately the CAV Definitive Collection?

If so, what LD players can handle PAL format discs? Only those built for the UK/etc market, or is this latent capability present in US players (assuming you have a display that could handle the PAL output)? I have seen models like the D515, or CLD-959 that claim to do both NTSC and PAL. If US players can't do it, what UK model would be equivalent in PQ to at least a D703/704?"

A:" There were some PAL laserdisc releases for the Star Wars movies , including a Special Edition box set. Sadly, no Definitive Collection or "Faces" editions......

To play a PAL laserdisc, you need a European-model laserdisc player. Such a player will only output the signal as raw PAL, and will not convert to NTSC. US-model LD players will not recognize or play a PAL disc at all.

Unfortunately, the PAL laserdisc market was miniscule, even in comparison to the tiny US market for LDs. Even the best PAL laserdisc players only approach the quality of our mid-level models such as the CLD-D606. The discs themselves tended to be poorly mastered, often converted from NTSC video transfers. Even with the few extra lines of resolution that PAL affords, it is rare to find a PAL laserdisc that looks as good as its NTSC counterpart. As a rule, it's not worth the effort for someone in the US to acquire PAL laserdisc equipment."
