How George Lucas created the O-OT fanbase...
Time
Originally posted by: CO Even if a better CD format came out, I would not buy it.....

It has- it's called Super Audio CD (SACD) and it is nearly dead due to a format war with DVD-Audio, despite the fact that there are now universal players on the market (that play both formats, including CDs), and despite the fact that the audio quaility of both is far superior to CDs. Besides, people seem to prefer listen to music in the crappy mp3 format for some reason.

Not necessarily:

"Lucas an advocate for digital projection and wants to phase out motion picture film. I hope he has preserved the film elements because digital is not archival. It's a very unstable format and it's easy to erase or degrade digital data.
Since there's no 'hard copy' like film, there's no way to restore missing computer information. It just vanishes."

Info Wanted: Do I Have The Best OT Preservation DVDs out there?

But the reissued DVDs? Hell no. LucasFilm already admitted after the announcement that the non-SE OT versions on the new DVDs are just bonus material taken straight from the Laserdiscs without any work done on them.

The 9/12 DVD are not being taken from the laserdiscs, they're being taken from the laserdisc MASTERS. There's a huge difference there.

What did the Prequel Trilogy need?

1) No trademark lines. This speaks to the dialogue, of course, but one of the most amazing parts of the OT was the classic phrases that invariably you would find ways afterwards to work into your life in an albeit inappropriate, but really satisfying ways. I'm talking about the:

"I have you now."
"All too easy."
"He's no good to me dead."
"Never tell me the odds."
"Luminous beings are we."
"Do or do not. There is no try."
"Yeah, I bet you have."
"Awwwwaggghh." Okay, this is Chewie’s and doesn't really count. But I often scream it during sex. It's okay to feel really bad for my girlfriend right now. The social services people feel the same way.

This is just the VERY tip of the iceberg. There is nothing even close in the OT. Instead we have:

"I killed them all. Even the women and children."
"This is really pod racing."
"Anakin, you’re breaking my heart."
"Only a sith thinks in absolutes." Which is, as we all know, is an ABSOLUTE statement.
"I enjoy making lots of money on shitty taco bell promotions." This last one is McCallum.

The OT films are some of the most quoted films in history, and even Roger Ebert said in his review of AOTC that "I was amazed, at the end of 'Episode II,' to realize that I had not heard one line of quotable, memorable dialogue".

GL's horrid alterations of the OT have pretty much turned me off to anything else he wants to put out there.
I really don't care anymore- he's destroyed all enthusiasm I may have had for future releases. I'll buy the DVDs on 9/12 - then that's it. No more. Unless the OOT is remastered and released in anamorphic DVD or on Blu-Ray or HD-DVD then I don't give a crap about anything else.

I don't know- I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Seeing how so few people have participated so far, I'd say it's a good idea.

POLL: WORST ACTOR OR ACTRESS IN THE PT?
Time

The best actors from the Prequel Trilogy were undoubtedly Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor, Ian McDiarmid and Christopher Lee. You may have noticed they're all British.

Liam Neeson is a full-blooded Irishman - watch it! I agree that he was one of the best actors in the PT - I think he was the best of all of them, actually. I think Christopher Lee COULD have been great......IF he had been given enough dialogue.

George Lucas has made a habit of not giving his actors/characters enough meaningful screen time (Darth Maul comes to mind).

If you want to do something along these lines which may be better ,you could try alertting DVD magazines/reviewers(also stores) to the quality of this "bonus" OOT release as they been previewing them I assume without seeing them (defin here in the UK they have big priviews) to let readers know because I would very surprised if LFL will actually send to reviewers a copy of these, as they will get torn shreds if they are as bad as been assumed, and LFL have done nothing disprove the quality of this release, but I am sure they still be pushing the bonus feature(the OOT) with in store posters in store promotions as the main selling point of the DVD and not every comes on the net and knows and thinks it a good standard product so some customers will be unaware.

just an idea.
We're going to be targeting a new one each week, so we can send our emails to Sound and Vision (or someplace else that does DVD reviews) next week.

I'll stand corrected if that's not the case, but to my ear it sounded new. Ditto for "The tractor beam is coupled to a terminal in seven locations..."

The tractor beam line is on my 1992 "hologram" VHS set, and it sounds exactly the same as the '97 version. It was also on the original 1977 theatrical mono mix. The 'close the blast door' line was also on the the original mono mix.

Hyperspace: Yep, I Think that Something is DEFINITELY up for '07!

Mightn't that be because Lowry was rushed and given thirty days to do the work instead of what Spielberg did, which was actually take a little time and effort on the Indiana Jones boxed set. Not only does the 04 set not contain the Star Wars movies like it advertises, but the so-called remaster was rushed.

There's been a lot of discussion about the subject of the kind of 'blue' tint that the '04 DVDs seem to have. Some think that it's because Lowry screwed up, others think that it was done deliberately to make the DVDs 'match' the tone of the PT films.

I thought the '93 colors were generally considered okay? At least they're better than the '04 "Crayola 8-pack" coloring.
I think the color correction that Steve Sansweet was referring to was the original color correction done for the DE set back in '93. I don't think any further color correction will be done for the 9/12 DVDs, and that's probably a good thing- since they would probably end up looking like the '04 DVDs.

It's funny- when I first bought the DVDs back in '04 and popped SW into my DVD player, I knew something looked off. It wasn't until I came here that my suspicions were confirmed.

Yeah, and I agree with CO, that unless the OOT is given a proper DVD release- I'm not at all interested in any of GL's "surprises".

OK, as my computer has crashed and I'm operating from a library, I need to type much info in this post. First off, my idea as it originally stood was get Jay to drop a line to the 75,000+ people who signed the petition, figuring that that many e-mails would get some attention. I PMed him, but he hasn't said anything on the board. As I'm a newbie, I really don't want to bother him further, but if anyone here knows him well, then drop him a line. Strength in numbers.

That would be great, but considering that we haven't heard from Jay in a while, we might as well just go on ahead and try to do this ourselves.

I agree that this thread should be made a sticky---anyone????

Your Greatest Star Wars Day.

But my next story is about the Egyptian Theater. In 1986 or '87, the Egyptian ran what I believe was the world's only officially-sanctioned triple-feature of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. The vast auditorium sat in the neighborhood of 1,200 people.
I don't know about that- they also showed the trilogy in NYC back in '86 or '87. I didn't go, but I've still got a videotape of the TV coverage and a full-page ad from the NY Times. I'm pretty sure that was an official showing too. I think they did it in other states as well.
