Even Cosmo Magazine is Talking About the 09/12 Release...

Mielr, I had no idea you were a girl! ...girl here as well...and that Cosmo thing made me laugh. So effin' dumb. I had to tell this girl at work there was no such thing as Star Trak, or at least I knew she MEANT Star TREK. My friend at work was changing shirts in the hallway, and I noticed he had a Rebel Alliance tattoo, and told him so. His jaw just about hit the floor when I named the symbol without hesitation. He was like, "I never knew a girl who knew what that was!"
Well hey, I think that makes....two of us? LOL! I think there might be a few other females lurking around here.

Yeah, girls who wouldn't know that annoy me. Without trying to sound sexist, it seems that so many of them just seem so oblivious to everything except what directly concerns them. Of course, I guess I could say that about most of my generation. So I'm glad I know so many girls who aren't like that.

Most guys are amazed when they find out I'm a Star Wars fanatic. When the SEs came out in '97, I was working in my sister's pizza place that she owned back then, which was just a few doors down from an AMC movie theater. (BTW- on ESB's opening day, the line from the movie theater stretched all the way to the front of our restaurant, and we went outside and took orders for slices from the people who were waiting on line!) One of our 'regulars' came in, and of course all the talk was about SW back then, with ESB playing next door. He thought he'd test my SW trivia knowlege, and asked me what language Jabba spoke. He seemed completely shocked when I said "Huttese".

DVD WRITING CAMPAIGN - WEEK ONE - "Entertainment Weekly"
Time
OK, I just wanted to let everyone know that the new target thread will start on Monday, August 28th. We will be writing to Sound and Vision magazine. They are probably the most popular A/V magazine in the US, and have done several Star Wars-related features over the years. There are a lot of SW fans there, particularly David Ranada who writes the tech page. He visited Skywalker Ranch a couple of years ago and wrote a lengthy feature artiticle for the magazine. We'll start the S&V thread on Monday and I'll give you all the contact info you'll need, so please continue to get your letters in to Entertainment Weekly until then, if you haven't already done so.

Thanks everybody!!!!!

So, this is how the DVDs are going to look...
Time
These shots don't look half bad (if they're real). Please don't misunderstand me- I am outraged that my favorite films of all time are being treated like an afterthought, but since I found out about this release- I resigned myself to the idea that GL is a jerk. I was OK with my laserdiscs, so if these DVDs are only a smidge better than the LDs, I will just have to be satisfied with them......for now. But the fight still goes on........

For new movies coming out, when a studio refuses to allow critics to preview the film, it usually means that the studio knows that the movie sucks. So they don't allow any previews in hopes to trick people into seeing before they hear that its bad. I'm afraid that its a similar thing going on here. Lucas knows that the quality is substandard, so he won't allow anyone to see screenshots or clips it before the release, to keep people wanting them. Then he has the fallback of "its bonus material" when people complain.
I don't believe it was a real review.

That's true- it might be a fake. I never even thought of that. I somehow doubt that they're giving out review copies of this, since it's of previously released DVD material (the 2004 discs) and I doubt LFL wants the 'bonus material' reviewed.

Has it ever been confirmed that the lightsaber construction scene was actually shot?

I really hope you're right, but I doubt it. I think Lucas will want the "ultimate" boxed set to be the complete "original vision" only. However, it's worth repeating that the 9/12 DVD sales are the only way LFL can guage demand for the OUT and the only ammunition that those within LFL who support the OUT will have.

I think it's very odd that they're selling these limited edition 'singles', right before they're planning on the 30th anniversary set next year. Why would they do that, and risk pissing even more people off - people who they want to sell this anniversary set to next year, unless they are indeed trying to decide whether they want to go to the trouble of doing a new set of OOT transfers?

I'm undecided. If it looks like something I could live with, but still mumble and grumble a little, then fine. But I will not buy them if they truly do suck.

There is that video ad from SW.com......but the shots from the OOT are pretty brief.

Should we be expecting to see the Luke/Biggs scenes, some of the other scenes from the "lost cut" and the sandstorm scene from Jedi? If the Luke/Biggs scenes hadn't already been put on the Behind The Magic set, that might have been exciting news.

I honestly think that they're going to gauge the demand for the OOT based on the 9/12 DVD sales, and then decide whether or not it's worth doing new transfers to put them in the "ultimate box set".

I mean, isn't it kind of risky for them to sell yet another set of DVDs less than a year before they're planning on selling this 30th anniversary mega-boxed set?

I really can't see myself buying that whole thing, including the PT films (which I don't want) and ANOTHER set of the SEs (which I don't like and by then will have already bought twice) just to get a few "deleted" scenes from the OT.

Mielr, yeah, let's extend it. EW is a great target. I've had one person who I PM'd tell me that they'd like to help but that they were currently busy.

How about announcing the writing targets the Friday before the writing week, so the campaign doesn't get lost in the shuffle of a new or mid-week? The new thread could be something like "Such-and-such Magazine - New Writing Target as of Monday, 08/28/06".

What do you think?

Ok so, then we'll announce the new writing campaign target here on Fri, and start the new thread on Monday (right?)

Please everyone try to send your EW email by Monday.

I really don't remember seeing ANY ads for the '05 set, and really- I only remember seeing a few TV ads for the '04 set. I imagine that these new DVDs will get a few TV ads a week or 2 before the release, then maybe a few before Christmas- and that's it.

The Suncoast stores have big cardboard displays up, but I haven't been to Best Buy or Circuit City lately to see if they have anything up.

Those menus actually look nice. I wonder if they'll be similar to some of the art 'animation' done for the 'musical journey' DVD that came with the ep. III soundtrack? Who did that DVD?

To be honest, I find the 'fancy' menus on the 2004 DVDs to be annoying. They take too long to go where they're supposed to.

No, I think the quality will be at least slightly better.

I hope the list gives everyone something to reference and maybe a little inspiration to fight the good fight.

Here it is:

DVD Reviewer Speaking Against Yet Another SW DVD Release This September:

That particular link is very helpful- I've been looking for something to anchor my email to- and that looks like a winner. Thanks very much, darkhelmet.

Info Wanted: Do I Have The Best OT Preservation DVDs out there?
Time

You need to brush up on news articles. I believe LucasFilms responded to questions on the quality of the upcoming releases and they stated it will be taken from the best source available for the non-SE OT. Which are the Laserdiscs. I think Sansweet confirmed that as well. Now like I said, a lot of people here say it's the Laserdisc Masters, so it will definitely be better than ripping the Laserdiscs to DVD, but we'll see.

It has been confirmed by Lucasfilm that the 1993 laserdisc masters will be used.

"The 1993 Laserdisc masters represented the best source for providing the original versions as DVD bonus material. Although these are non-anamorphic versions, they do preserve the original widescreen composition of the movies."(Lynne Hale - publicity@lucasfilm.com)
