Star Wars Vault or the Making of Star Wars?
Time
"The Making Of" book is a must-have. It's one of those books that when you start reading it/flipping through it, you can't help but become totally immersed in it.

I haven't seen the "vault" book in person yet, but it seems like it might be an amped-up version of "The Star Wars Scrapbook-The Essential Collection" (also by Sansweet) that came out a few years back (in other words, maybe a bit gimmicky?)

I've been debating whether or not to get the "vault" book, but "the making of" was a no-brainer for me.

I don't know, I don't get it either. I love ROTJ. There are so many great moments in the film, and ESB would be pretty unsatisfying without it.

If the question is "would you give up the prequels in exchange for..." my answer would be YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would give up the prequels in exchange for (fill in the blank) .

I would give up the prequels in exchange for a pack of gum .

Um........NO!?!?

I was only 6 when Star Wars was released, and I really didn't get in to SW until after ESB was released. ROTJ was the only film of the OT that I saw on opening day (I saw SW and ESB theatrically for the first time a year earlier in 1982).

I ADORE ESB and ROTJ. They are way too much a part of me and a part of my life to give up for the sake of having 3 other crappy movies not exist.

I remember how much fun I had anticipating the release of ROTJ and how exciting it was to sit in the theater and watch it for the first time (and not have anyone spoil the plot twists or the ending for me before I saw it). I wouldn't give that up for anything.

I don't think it's been totally lost- SW '77 is still the only film in the AFI's top 100 movies of all time (it even moved up a few spots in the most recent list) and SW is still the only one of the films to have been nominated for best picture, although I've always felt that ESB got cheated because it was a sequel, to me it was good enough on it's own to have been nominated for best pic. Times have changed though, I think if Empire were made today, it would have been nominated and may have even won. The academy seems to look differently upon sequels now, with one of the LOTR movies winning best pic a few years back, and I think the OOT did a lot to change those perceptions about sequels.

I do think the PT has brought down the franchise to an extent, but I think it only has limited power to damage the OOT and SW '77 in particular. The OOT is just too damn good.

I have to agree with JediRandy for once- if you don't like the prequels (which I don't), don't watch them. I mean, giving up two of my all-time favorite movies (ESB and ROTJ) is something I could never do. ESB has for many years been my favorite SW film. As I get older, I appreciate SW more, but I still adore ESB, and ROTJ is sort of like the conclusion of ESB.

Believe me, I understand the whole thing about the PT sullying the Star Wars name, but honestly I don't really think about that too much. As long as I have the OOT to watch, I don't give a crap about the PT. My biggest concern as a SW fan now (like most everyone here) is the OOT on HD-DVD or Blu-ray.

.....and it's probably true that even if SW '77 were the only SW film, GL would still have screwed around with it.

There have been a few TV sitcoms that quit when they were still strong. Each time, the actors\creators said they wanted to stop when the series were still good, still watchable. Leave at the top of their game, etc, etc.

The Prequels are what happen when you don't do that. Lucas should have quit when he was ahead.

The term "jumping the shark" springs to mind.

Is this a "fanboy" site? I thought "fanboys" were Lucas-loving sycophants?

I think the show will be like any other show- people will check out the first few episoses and keep watching if it's good. If it's not good, the ratings will drop and the show will get cancelled. I don't even think the most loyal PT fan will support the show if it sucks (or maybe they will, I don't know. The continuing support of the PT baffles me, so maybe the show will suck and still bring in high ratings).

Anything? Anything At All? (that is remotely positive or good about the SE and PT?)
Time
Yes, I have an opinion. (LOL)

I liked the Biggs/Luke scene in the SW SE (although I wish they'd used the whole scene rather than an edited version)........and that's about it. It's the only addition that actually enhanced the film, IMO. All of the other changes either pissed me off, or were so subtle that I didn't notice them at all.

As far as the PT goes, I liked seeing Liam Neeson in TPM, though I feel his talents were totally wasted. I didn't really care for any of the music in the PT. It sounded uninspired to me (probably because it was- and who could blame him). There were so many great themes in the OT, and there was nothing really comparable in the PT. I can't say that I really enjoyed any of the saber-fights in the PT, either. They came across as being very fake and boring to me. I saw TPM twice, and AOTC and ROTS once each, and I can honestly say that I have no desire to see any of them again.

Yeah, but did any of us really take that seriousy back then? Back then it seemed more of a "the films are back in print, get them while you can before they disappear!"

I DID take GL seriously when the "one last time" campaign was rolled out, I guess because I'd heard that the SEs were coming in a couple of years. I bought the Faces VHS tapes back in '95, but of course at that time I really didn't know what to expect from the SEs as they weren't really giving out a whole lot of info. I'd assumed that most of it was going to be just digital clean-up of FX, but I also heard rumors about a digital Jabba being put somewhere (to replace the original Jabba in ROTJ, I assumed). That gave me a bad feeling about what was to come.

When I finally saw the SEs in '97, I panicked and got the LDs too.

Yeah, I was going to say that I have the Criterion LD of that version, but I wasn't sure if it was the US theatrical or European theatrical version. There are so many different versions of that movie, it gets confusing.

Mr. McGregor hated SW?

Like Mark Hamill? Ewan McGregor was already a fairly well-known actor before appearing in the prequels, Mark Hamill wasn't. I think Mark Hamill was typecast because SW was his first major motion picture, and so most people only knew him as Luke. Ewan had done a bunch of films prior to the prequels, so there was less of a chance of people only associating him with young Obi-Wan.

Info & Info Wanted: A Few other Extended TV Cuts of Films...
Time
There's an extended TV version of "Murder By Death" that has never been released on video. The TV version had at least 2 scenes that were not in the theatrical version, nor on any VHS, LD or DVD release, as far as I know.

There's also a different TV version of "Deathtrap". The scene where Michael Caine and Christopher Reeve kiss was replaced with an alternate scene for the network TV broadcast.

Best way to download those clips would be using a video stream recorder such as WM Recorder.

As for Preservation, Babyhum included them on his BH006 - When Star Wars Ruled the World DVD.

Thanks for the info!

You're all going to laugh at me, but the only way I could previously capture these clips was to set my VHS-C camcorder on the desk and record them off the computer screen.... I was actually shocked at how good the video came out (aside from the occasional scrolling line), the sound was ok- a bit tinny, but clear enough.

What If The SE Were Only...

I've been saying for years that I don't care what George Lucas does to the OT - he can photoshop Orlando Bloom's face over Harrison Ford's for all I care, as long as the OOT is made available.

I saw the SEs in '97, and while I was happy for the opportunity to see them on the big screen again, the changes disturbed me enough to prevent me from enjoying them totally because I knew at the time that they were meant to replace the OOT. Even though I didn't own an LD player then, I still bought a set of the Faces LDs after seeing the SEs, because they were the highest quality release of the OOT and they were going out of print.
