The Beginning: Making 'Episode I': A comedy masterpiece

To me, the worst moments were the robot-factory scene with 3PO getting his head ripped off, etc., and the CGI Yoda pulling out his lightsaber and doing back-flips. I could not BELIEVE what I was watching.

Well, as far as sheer artistry goes, there is no surpassing the Darth Maul vs. Qui-Gon & Obi-Wan battle. That was a beautifully coreographed scene. However, it is incorrect to connect this saber battle to any in the OT. The saber battles in the OT weren't nearly that artistic, especially the very first one.

That scene felt too choreographed to me. It lacked the kinetic feel of the duels in ESB and ROTJ. I agree that the SW duel wasn't much, but considering Ben's age and the fact that he had decided beforehand to let Vader "win", it's understandable why it ended up being what it was.

The ESB duel to me was the best. Maybe it wasn't quite as fancy as the TPM duel, but it felt more like a real duel. You could feel Luke's utter exhaustion by the end. The duel in TPM felt more to me like a dance.

Original theatrical subtitles....

I remember during the GOUT debacle someone mentioned that dvd's can be made with a flag telling the player that it's a "widescreen" disc even if it's not "anamorphic widescreen," and this can allow for things like automatic xy scaling. Even then, I'm not sure if the player would automatically move the subtitles into the safe zone for zooming or if it's possible to do that at all.

My RCA DVD player (which actually belongs to my sister) actually moves the subtitles into the "safe zone" when you zoom in. But, I understand that a lot of peoples' players don't do that.

Sorry- I misunderstood. I actually liked the way the subtitles were on the Faces LD's (just below the image, in one line only) and I wish they had been kept that way on the DVDs which have a lot of the subtitles in two lines now, chopping them off when you zoom in with some DVD players.

Thanks, Mielr. That was me who wanted to know. Hmm, so that's what it looks like. Certainly looks a good spot better than the damned font they use on the newer DVDs... and look, it's actually in frame! Who would have thought that would be the case?

I've never seen a film (in a theater) with subtitles that had the titles anywhere else but on the frame. Where else could they go?

Info: 16mm ESB and ROTJ films on ebay

Why a flat print of ANH fetched over $1500 from the same seller boggles the mind!

I think $1500 is good, even for a P&S print (you could spend a whole lot more on a HDTV).

I wonder why he's asking less for the ROTJ 'scope print (due to the huge popularity of ESB, I guess). To me, the ROTJ print is the real gem out of the two.

The prints look very good- good color. I have some strips of 70mm from SW '77 and they're totally red/pink (before the low-fade stock was available).

Here's a photo of a subtitle shot from ROTJ from an eBay auction of a ROTJ 16mm print (photo is a bit fuzzy, but you get the idea). Some members of the forum had never seen SW or ROTJ theatrically, and I remember some discussion a while back of what the theatrical subtitles looked like, their placement, etc (vs the DVD and LD subtitles). I remember I also mentioned once that I had seen a couple of those 70mm collector film frames (from Willitts Desigins) on eBay that featured film cels with subtitles, but I was never able to find a photo of one again and I don't have any in my collection.

Anyhow, here you go:

Does the PT work as a fun & fluff comic book production?

I don't think PT would work as a comic book either. A comic book about trade disputes- FUN! ;

Isn't the whole question of whether or not the PT would make a good comic series kind of a pointless one considering that there are multiple comic adaptions of them? All it would take to answer the question is a quick trip to the local comic shop or favorite online retailer.

Ask Major fatal Moebius. He's the one who posed the question.

As for myself, I wasn't aware of any PT comic adaptations, but I imagine they're just as entertaining as the films they're derived from.

BANNED BOND: The Criterion Collection on DVD (Released)

A bit of interesing info- there seems to be a bit of missing footage (a few frames) in all of the DVD versions of Goldfinger. The scene where Odd Job is turning the corner and misses the turn, the car obviously jumps ahead due to the misssing frames. Apparently the missing frames are on the Criterion LD, but not on any other LD or DVD.

WOW!

I never knew about this! Thanks for posting that info...
You're welcome. There was some discussion about this on the home theater forum the other day. Someone noticed the jump cut on the DVD, and checked the Criterion LD to see if the jump cut was there as well- it wasn't. Apparently, the frames that ended up being cut appeared to have some damage to them, so instead of replacing them, MGM just cut them out (!) and didn't even bother to give Lowry new elements when the 4k scans were being done. Insane.

also the duel in jedi was always my favorite because not only was Luke finally Vader's equal but bests him in a lightsaber duel.

my favorite music is the music that plays over the scene where vader says he will turn Leia to the dark side and luke flipps out and finally decides to kill him. of course he does not.

the operatic music that plays there is a lot like a wagnerian opera piece.

I agree. That music is fantastic- I think Ben Burtt said something on the '04 DVD commentary about that piece of music being one of the most requested from the trilogy. I was disappointed when I discovered it wasn't included on the original soundtrack LP when I bought it way back when.

I also love the funeral pyre scene.

I'm surprised that they are still selling these things given all the technical errors. Are they ever going to fix those or is this seriously how Star Wars is going to look forever simply because Lucas wasn't paying attention when he approved the transfer (which is exactly the case--he supervised the new color correction and approved it)

What "technical errors"? Don't you mean "deliberate artistic choices"? They're never going to fix something that they won't even admit is flawed.

Mark Hamill "ready to evacuate" his Malibu home.

I remember this too. I was at work at the time, but when I came home, my Mom told me that she had seen him on CNN, standing outside his home talking about the fires.

I checked his official website, and so far there's no word on whether or not his house escaped destruction this time.
