I'd be fine with a fully remastered original interpositive in high definition with the theatrical audio, as Blade Runner did. But yes, it is better to go the negatives.

Y'know, something that's always fascinated me about situations where the actual o-neg is scanned (such as the '04 Lowry job) is that everything on the film is .... well, negative. How exactly do they go about ... positivizing it?

I imagine in a similar fashion to the way you can turn a positive photo into a negative image in photoshop, only in reverse. It just reverses the colors: red to green, purple to yellow, blue to orange, etc.

That is an interesting can of worms, but if Nerfherder's earlier quotation can be relied upon, and I think it can, and this was cut from the final cut during post production, then the trailers might well have been completed before then.

Yeah, that trailer would have been completed and shipped out to theaters long before the FX were finished, and probably before the music was completed, as well.

If the cut-scene was chopped at the last minute, they would have already gone with the green saber by then.

After that, well, I really don't see what else there is to dip with. It looks pretty clear to me that we're seeing a repeat of what happened with these movies on dvd.

Right- the selling point with the '06 DVDs was that they included the GOUT, which the '04 set didn't.

Aside from the OOT, there won't be anything left to pull out of the hat for a blu-ray double-dip.

-OR-
Maybe with the 2nd blu-ray release, well finally get the OOT as anamorphic DVDs! Then, in 2027, when the SE is released on Ultraviolet-Ray, we'll get the OOT on blu-ray! :-P

I think maybe Frink was referring to other six-film franchise sets that have been released (?)

Aside from the fact that there won't be any OOT included, what about the fact that they're bundling the prequels with this set? So, half of the $150+ or whatever you'd be paying will be to purchase the prequels. I think that alone will turn a lot of people off.

$150? Is that right?

That's just a guesstimate. If the msrp is $200 or so, then the retail price will probably be $120-$150 or thereabouts. For six blu-ray films, I doubt if it would be much less than that.

True, and everyone knows that by now, so I wonder how many people will wait it out 'till the next release.

Maybe I'm being a bit too optimistic, but Lucas' position on the OOT seems to have softened a bit. The fact that he used the cost of restoration as an excuse, and not the "my vision" argument, makes me think that there may be a chance down the road, when the OT is eventually released separately, and they need an incentive to have people buy them all over again.

When they start posting warnings over there- it's getting heated. ;-) Try reading a few pages back...

Hi, everyone, this is my first post here.

Today, Luca$ announced formally the SW Blu-Ray boxset, the best the movies have ever looked!!! (yeah, right).

Anyway, he showed this gem though:

<span style="font-family: monospace;"><span style="line-height: 16px; font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;"><span style="line-height: 14px;">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdJ0E7HbTKc&feature=player_embedded</a></span></span></span></span>

Ahh! It's been taken down by the Evil Empire.

Thanks for exhuming that vile and ugly old phrase from the past, Sunday. We can have civil discussions and disagreements on this board without it.

I agree- I'm sick enough of it being repeated almost daily in the SW threads at the Home Theater Forum, used as an excuse not to take even valid criticisms of Lucas seriously.

The Blu-ray box set is my last hope for the franchise. If it does in fact include only the 2004 edition, I won't buy it. I haven't watched the trilogy in years, and if Lucas can't be bothered with cleaning up the original elements, I can't be bothered with giving him my money.

I totally agree. I am finished with giving this man money for a few scraps of deleted scenes. I will absolutely not buy this set. If the GOUT was supposedly a referendum on the OOT, then let this be a referendum for the SE/PT:

I vote "NO!"

I see... Perhaps you should find a place (a topic) to sum up all this to present it the right way then. Maybe a feedback thread considering the current one is mostly for help and technical discussion. Just a thought. Cause as you can see I had no idea of what are your projects. lol

There's a lot of info and discussion in this thread:

There is also another error in the '93 PCM for Empire.

I don't know if you're going to be working on the '93/GOUT mix for ROTJ as well, but in case you are I wanted to mention that there is an audio drop-out on all versions (vhs, LD, DVD) that occurs right after the scene where Luke cuts off Vader's hand. It's only in one channel, but it goes totally silent for a moment. That may be something you want to patch-up as well if you're going to be working on it anyway.

The 70mm frames are a poor reference since they are taken from very faded 70mm print masters.  Especially Return of the Jedi, most shots are pink.

They must all be from pre LPP Eastman stock.
Only my ROTJ cels are fading- the SW and ESB cels still look great. The ROTJ cels are on a different stock than the other 2.

The 1995 mix has mono elements, while the 1993 DC mix does not, right? Even though its just DC+mono, that still qualifies it as a seperate mix. It's based on the DC mix, but it's not the DC mix.

No - the DC & FACES sound and picture come from the exact same masters, which we now of course know on DVD as the GOUT.

The FACES trilogy is on 6 discs, the DC set is on 9 discs. That's basically it, aside from the DC bonus features that weren't carried over onto the FACES discs, and the Leonard Maltin interviews that were only on the FACES discs.
