This confuses me. I don't understand why it was necessary for the new wipes to start at a different time if they were using the original negative. Did they just say "eh, close enough"?

Yeah....I'm a bit confused as well. There wouldn't be any wipes at all on the Original-Original negative (meaning: Camera negative).

All the FX, wipes included, would have been done post-production.

Back in the 1920s they did in-camera FX, like iris wipes. But as motion-photography became more sophisticated, that clumsy practice stopped at least in-part for the reason that if you screwed it up, you couldn't undo it.

I'm becoming more and more skeptical about everything that's been fed to us by Lucasfilm, including what source materials they ACTUALLY used for the SEs.

When was the last time you actually watched a prequel? (Or: Revenge of the Sith still blows.)
Time

I saw ROTS once theatrically in 2005- that was the last time I've watched any of the Prequels in their entirety.

Whenever one of them airs on TV, I'll watch a minute or two just to torture myself.

I actually watched a few minutes of ROTS on Spike a couple of weeks ago- and I had absolutely no memory of the scene I was watching.

Quite a difference from the days when I would try to catch every HBO airing of SW in 1983, even sneaking downstairs in the middle of the night, careful to avoid the "squeaky step" so that my mom wouldn't hear me. ;-)

Who (if anyone) saw the Holiday Special in 1978 before they ever saw Star Wars?
Time

I have a very unique experience regarding the Star Wars films, and that is this:

The Star Wars Holiday Special was the first Star Wars film I ever saw.

I'm not 100% sure, but I've suspected for years that this might be the case with me, as well.

I didn't see SW until 1982 (theatrical re-release), and I was 8 when the SWHS aired, though I don't have a specific memory of seeing it.......

BUT.......

My Mom once mentioned that she remembered seeing something with Wookiees "living in trees, having families" etc., AND she was friends with Art Carney. If she had seen a TV listing that mentioned Art Carney, she would have watched it-----which means I would have watched it with her (having only 5 TV stations back then, I watched ANYTHING that was aimed at kids).

So- based on all that, it's a pretty good possibility that The SWHS was the 1st SW film I ever saw, as well.

Also, GL adopted 3 children, and MJ adopted 3 children.

(And no, I don't buy the story that MJ's 3 kids were his biologically).

Well at least one of MJ's children has vitiligo, so it's not entirely impossible.

Really? I didn't know that. I've heard that one or more of MJ's sisters has it.

MJ's daughter was supposedly fathered by former child star Mark Lester, and there has been some speculation that the oldest boy was fathered by MJ's dermatologist.

Am I the only one who, upon first seeing the title of this thread, immediately thought it was a call to reform regarding the official Star Wars website?

Funny you mention that.  The first time I came across the thread, I thought the exact same thing.  I thought to myself, "Why does StarWars.com need saving?  Aren't those bastards rich enough?"  Then of course I read the thread and had a "d'oh!" moment.

Me too. :-)

I especially love the 2nd one. It reminds me of Fahrenheit451 where everyone is responsible for memorizing one book, because they knew they'd all be burned eventually.

Fahrenheit1977.....?

If it's sourced from the GOUT then how can you know? The whole question was whether the GOUT itself was missing something.

I know because I've been a Star Wars fan for nearly 30 years- the GOUT was not my first viewing of Star Wars.

With all the long-time fans on this site, if something was missing from that scene, somebody would have noticed.......unless you're talking about this:

Going back to the Han/Greedo scene. I was looking at the two on youtube and the gout is missing that shot but it's there for the SE. So did the SE add a shot (where they make Han dodge Greedo's blast) or is the gout missing something?

I uploaded this for situations like this:

Original 1977 version (sourced from GOUT), no censoring, nothing missing. PURE.

I see your "Luke & Leia" and raise you "The Dark Side Beckons" (begins when Luke is hiding from Vader toward the end).  Phenomenal.

I'd say ROTJ is a veeery close second to ESB for the best score of the originals.  That's one area in which it certainly isn't lacking.

Definitely! "The Dark Side Beckons" still gives me chills. I was sooo disappointed when I purchased the LP back in the day, and it wasn't included. I think it was Ben Burtt who said that people kept coming up to him around that time and asking where they could purchase that piece of music.

For some reason- the ESB score is the one I listen to least. :-?

There are people on here who love TPM because they are young enough to be nostalgic for it.

The same goes with ROTJ.

But if you brake the film down, look at the art design, the writing the acting, the attention to detail, even the scoreROTJ is the weakest film of the OT and set the scene for almost everything wrong with the PT.

Now, I TOTALLY disagree with that statement. I think Jedi has the strongest score of the original 3 films. "Luke & Leia" is the finest theme John Williams wrote for the trilogy.

Just sayin'. ;-)

Info Wanted: OOT - Which is the best preservation project?
Time

JediTray said:
In your experienced opinion(s) of what is available at this moment, which release is the very best in picture and sound quality?

Best OOT Picture quality: The 2006 DVD releases (the GOUT), which is what Dark_Jedi and G-force are using for their project.

Best OOT Sound Quality: The 1993 Def. Col. LDs & 1995 FACES LDs. The same sound was used for the GOUT DVDs, but it sounds somewhat compressed compared to the PCM sound on the LDs.

When D_J finishes his set, no doubt both the picture and sound will be the best of both sources.

BTW, JediTray- what is that image you're using for an avatar? It looks familiar, but I can't place it.

If you decide to do this, be prepared for a backlash from diehard George Lucas fans, and by that I mean those who love all the 2004 Special Edition changes, believe that Lucas really did have a vision in mind all along and basically can do no wrong.

You mean, the people who think that adding Hayden Christiansen to ROTJ "nicely ties all 6 films together" ? *gag*
