I'm using a crappy $40 Sony DVD player from Target, and it plays through layer breaks seamlessly every time.

I have a crappy $50 Sony DVD player from Target, and it pauses on all layer breaks, commercial or homemade discs.
What model is yours? Mine is DVP-SR500H.
But, I get the same pauses on my Panasonic Blu-Ray player, too (BD65).

I do have some minor concerns. I'll list them below.

1) At 1:00:33 when Vader says "I told you she would never consciously betray the rebellion.", the disc skips a bit. On every audio track (minus the hidden one), the line ends up being "consciously betray the rebe-e-e-ellion". I don't know if that was a burn error or if that's because of a layer change and my DVD player sucks... It's a reasonably new LG (DN898). If anyone has experience with this player b0rking layer transitions like this, then let me know.

That's the layer-break, because that's exactly where I get a pause.

On ESB the layer break is just as the space slug is retreating into his cave, and on ROTJ its when Wicket is trying to lead Leia to his village after they kill the stormtroopers.

I tried to put them where they are on the GOUT, but I am limited to what IMGBurn will do, when I watched them they were not even noticed on my player when the layer changed, I really don't know why this question is always brought up, new players should play right through smoothly.

The reason I ask is because all of my players (except my computer) pause at the point of the layer breaks, on every DL DVD I play. That's 1 old Sony, 1 new Sony and my new Panasonic Blu-Ray player (BD65).

Guess it's just me (?) :-/

I was kind of under the impression that the only players out there that played DL DVDs seamlessly were Oppos.

ESB:

- The hotline recordings are really cool, nice addition!
- Picture looks fantastic, as expected
- All audio tracks sync perfectly
- The chapter issue I mentioned with Star Wars is also present in Empire
- The cave scene issue from your V1 set (never got V2, so I don't know how well it was fixed for that) is simply not there at all, it looks just as good as the rest of the film

ROTJ:

- Same chapter issue
- All audio mixes sync just fine
- Picture seems a wee bit bright, but I'm thinking that's just the GOUT and I'm not remembering correctly (Jedi is the one I watch least of the trilogy, so I don't have the same frame of reference I have for the other two).
- Again, subtitles are perfect!

How are the layer breaks on the V3 set (as viewed with your DVD or BR player, not on your computer)? On the V1 set they were in different spots than the GOUT, and on V2 they were close to the GOUT but off by a bit.

I am aware of the fan-made GOUT enhancements however.

I have found Obtaining copy’s vary hard.

So I have been trying to fined the best way to view the GOUT itself.

Not as hard as trying to get the GOUT to look better with cables...

Someone, I'm sure, will help you out. You may want to wait for V3, which should be out shortly:

Info Wanted: Pre-'93 Japanese Special Collection LD transfers?

I found this one above....it's the Hologram box set....4 days left on it.

Yeah, there are a few still up, but I was much more willing to pay the < $10 prices that they'd been going for up until a few days ago...

So I guess I either need to be more patient, or pull a Dr. Georgelove, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the GOUT.

The one you're searching for, is it the VHS companion to the DC?

Not that I'm aware of, it's pre-THX. I've read some who say that this VHS set, the Fox Special Widescreen LaserDiscs, and the Japanese Special Collection are all from the same master, but I've also read that they're not...so...Idunno.

I think the "hologram" VHS set, even though it's not THX and is a different transfer as the DC is still sort of considered the "companion" to the DC LD set due to the fact that they were released the same year, and both had the George Lucas book included (the VHS book being the abridged version).

Which do you think is a better ESB plot twist? Where do you think the other one would have lead?

I like the Vader is Luke's father twist better, but the other is interesting.

...Anakin was under the impression that Obi-Wan was banging his wife...

I don't even remember that. They should have played that up more- Ben should have been deeply in love with Amidala, then rejected when Amidala chose Anakin over him.

Not that that would have made those movies NOT crap, but it couldn't have made them any worse.

@ Mielr: I'm convinced that Youtube comment sections are the rubbish dumps of the internet, where the uninformed and imbecilic gravitate to compete for the title of dumbest person alive.

Yes there are quite a few like that there, but it's worth putting up with the imbeciles for the few who have never seen the original scenes before, and thank me for uploading them.
I feel like I'm providing a public service for those few people. ;-)
It's not as bad as TFN, anyway.

I'm only 21 years old, but I've loved Star Wars my whole life.  When I was eight and got a dog for my birthday I even named him Luke Skywalker.  Unfortunately, I don't believe that I have ever seen the original trilogy in it's completely original form.  I'm an anthropology major an intend to write my 25 page senior research paper on Star Wars and not only the effect that it has had on our culture as a whole, but on it's own subculture that it has inspired.  I would feel pretty irresponsible if I were to write that paper without seeing the original trilogy; the movies that started it all, and that changed so many peoples' lives forever.

Hi Katie! :-)
I've uploaded some original scenes from the classic trilogy to YouTube (taken from the GOUT). I'd love it if you'd post your comments when you have a chance- there are so many numbskulls that post there on a daily basis, your comments I'm sure would be a breath of fresh air. Please read the description (or "manifesto") that I've written for each clip, as well.

Info Wanted: OT Definitive Collection on DVD?

I see.  So who has a version that is as close to the Original Movies that I saw in 1977, with the best quality?

I am talking the Original, no Special Editions of any kind.  I don't even like Star Wars with C3PO's explanation of the tractor beam deactivation.  I love the almost silent computer files sorting in front of the characters.  Very nice.

I don't mind grain but I do want anamorphic.

Any advice?

The GOUT version of SW has the original '77 scroll formatting, and omits "a new hope". The GOUT trilogy is not anamorphic but the dark_jedi trilogy is. The Lucasfilm Pwnage edition of SW is also is anamorphic and also uses the GOUT as a source, but they didn't do ESB and ROTJ.

Adywan did a 30th anniversary edition of ESB that uses the SE and the GOUT as sources. I haven't seen it yet but I understand he used the GOUT to replace many of the SE additions.

Info Wanted: OT Definitive Collection on DVD?

Yeah, it's called the GOUT (George's Original Unaltered Trilogy). It was originally released in 2006, and you can now buy them in a boxed set (as ChainsawAsh linked to), or you can still buy the original single releases (I saw them at Target the other day for $13 each- they have gold borders on the cover art).

If you're looking for all the DC extras, however, you won't find them on any commercially-released DVD, only on fan preservations.

Now I need some input for Empire, I am going to start the samples with the exact same tweak I used for Star Wars for my starting point, so what scenes should I post comparisons of? let's get this one started.

d_j, I just want to remind you again about the layer breaks on these. Make sure you're happy with them before you finish up. If there's some way to burn test copies and check them on a DVD player, do that so you know how they will end up playing back.

Well I don't know what to tell you Mielr, I don't see all this red you are talking about and I really don't like DrM's tweaks as of yet, it barely changes anything, and definitely not worth a new render and encode, like I have said, if more tweaking needs to be done make your suggestions to what you want done, because if WE don't come up with something soon it stays as is, there is NO way in hell I am doing a scene by scene, I really don't think it is worth it to me, I honestly can't see how you don't think this latest tweak is not better than "as is", but everyone see's these colors different I guess.

Sorry, I don't mean to confuse the issue - the only reason I chimed in was because you asked for my input (I had not said anything up until that point) and I happened to have a cel of one of the scenes in question from the last batch, and thought that it might help. Of course, I don't expect that you would do scene-by-scene color correction as it definitely would not be worth the extra work.

I haven't looked at DrMs other tweaks. I was only referring to DrM's tweaking of the film cel I provided for comparison, and in comparison to the examples you provided the skin and jumpsuit look redder in your versions, as they look on my MacBook screen. Of course you may not see the red I'm seeing because of the difference in our monitors, and therein lies the problem.

The colors on the V1 and V2 look fine to me, so use your own judgement. :-)

Mielr, well, your film frame has definitely aged, but a quick and dirty adjustment to de-age it looks like this: http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/2910/lukehanceltweaked.jpg

I'm starting to think the orange in the skin tones (especially Luke) that I was unhappy about in my suggested settings on the other thread, might actually be accurate.

Perhaps a bad make-up attempt to give Tatooine residents a tan?

I'm on the fence.

That looks very good- you kept the fiight suit the correct hue of orange, and the skintones look good too. I think they're too reddish in both the examples d_j posted (the flightsuit and the skintones). As I stated, the backlight I used has a fluorescent lamp so it has a tendency to tint everything greenish. The film stock is from 1995....see here: http://www.film-center.com/dates.html
The SW and ESB cels all look quite good to the naked eye. Only the ROTJ cels have faded significantly.

Here are a few more pic samples,

<img src="http://img833.imageshack.us/img833/9036/pic1ns.png" />

I have a 70mm cel of this scene- I'm going to dig it out and report back.

So far, the skin tones look a bit too pink to me on the 'tweaked' versions.

I'm on the fence right now about the contrast-
One question- the straight V3 samples have already had their contrast adjusted, correct? So, the tweaked versions are just backing off that adjustment a bit (not heightening the original GOUT contrast?)

EDIT: FWIW, comparing the cel (looking at it with a slide loop) to the way your 2 examples look on my MacBook screen, Luke's jumpsuit looks quite a bit more orange in the cel. It's a brighter, truer orange, more yellow I guess. Luke and Han's skintones have a more neutral/yellow color as well.

EDIT EDIT: I took a photo of the cel against a litebox with a digital camera- the litebox's fluorescent lamp makes everything greenish, but the color of the orange suit is close to the way it looks with the naked eye:
