Looking for link to SW 1976 trailer
Time

I think the music used was Gustav Holst's "The Planets (Mars)" I actually think I have this on 8mm, but I don't have a projector to run it. ;-P

That's the one I'm referring to (but the top link sounds like it has PAL speedup). The narrator sounds like it may be Malachi Throne (who also narrated the The Story of Star Wars LP).

Sitting in the front row of the balcony was like IMAX. It was somehow the perfect viewing angle. It made the speeder bike scene even more awesome.

To say the crowd went nuts when Vader grabs Palpatine and gives him the shaft is an understatement.

People clapped and cheered all the way to the end. How often do you get an audience experience like that anymore?

Yes, I remember the audience clapped when the film was over, and at various points during the film.

I remember that I (and the people sitting in front of me) actually ducked during the speeder bike chase, when the bike went under the fallen log! Seeing it on a big screen (even though I wasn't that close to it) really has an enveloping effect.

I saw it 2 or 3 more times in the theater after opening day.

Please don't.

I am actually happy that I saw the films at home. That way I could watch them without waiting. Actually I could not resit but to watch ROTJ immediately after ESB (I still have a habit to watch them together). I can't imagine having to wait 3 years in-between.

:)

I didn't have to wait 3 years because I saw SW and ESB theatrically for the 1st time in 1982. There's no comparison between seeing them on TV and in a theater.

Harris said that several years ago, could be wrong but I think things have changed.

I went to home theater forum to see if I could find any recent comments re: IB prints from Mr. Harris. Well, apparently, they've updated the site (I haven't been there in a while and had to get a new password to log in) and I'm having a lot of trouble getting any results for anything other that posts that are a few months old (!?)

That is true that they are not emulsion based and are printed, and will not fade the same way that other film types will, but they still fade. Just the way a print in a magazine can fade over time. Dyes are still chemicals and react to heat and light, both of which are there in extremes in carbon arc and other forms of 35mm projection.

For our purposes the fade will be so small as not to be an issue.

Oh, for sure. If the Book of Kells was displayed in a window for the last 500 years, it would be badly faded, no doubt. The same would happen if IB prints were exposed to sunlight or fluorescent bulbs, but since they're mostly sealed up in dark cans, they're protected from most of the bad stuff.

Of course, the Kodak stock has all those nasty chemicals stuck to it, altering and changing away, as chemicals tend to do.

I've never heard of an IB print fading; I've had trailers from the 50's that look perfect, and there's stuff dating back to the 30's on nitrate that's supposed to look outstanding.  IB matrices can widely vary though.  I've had 3 or 4 prints of Thunderball over the years, and only 1 had perfect color registration.  The others were off.  I don't think that was due to fading, but more due to processing.

They definitely fade, just nowhere near as fast as other stocks. in 1996 I had  two IB prints to work on for a restoration,  both struck one after the other in 1972, one had faded noticebaly more than the other. One had been kept in a temp controlled film archive, the other in the general office area in a desk. If kept well, the fading over a decade or three is pretty minimal, but eventually all things chemical change with time.

I'm inclined to agree with mikeaz123. IB prints are non-chemical in nature. They are printed in full daylight, lithography-style on a clear (or "blank") piece of polyester film (or celluloid, pre-1950s). There's no such thing as IB "stock" because IB prints do not have an emulsion layer of chemicals & they don't have to be "developed" by dunking them into various photo chemicals, like color film stock does.

Everything ages, of course, but IB prints age in a totally different way from Easmancolor prints because they were made in a totally different way.

Some Technicolor labs got sloppy near the end, and put out greenish prints (there are some prints of Cabaret that suffered from this), but that was from errors in the initial printing, not due to age-related fading.

Not to be a wet blanket, but according to Robert Harris, Tech prints can't be transferred satisfactorily because of their density & they best serve as color reference, not much else.

There are some dissenting views out there & you can take it up with Mr. Harris over at home theater forum, if you care to. ;-)

30 years: Your Memories of Waiting for ROTJ
Time

ROTJ is the only OT film that I saw on opening day.

I was a new Star Wars fan, and had seen SW and ESB theatrically for the first time in '82.

I awaited ROTJ with great anticipation. It was the only film of the 3 who's secrets had not been revealed to me before I saw the movie.

I devoured every TV report, newspaper article and every issue of Bantha Tracks & Starlog which provided photos and reports of the film for months and months prior to the release. Then of course, was the great first REVENGE trailer, soon followed by the news that the title had been changed!

I remember seeing a photo of Death Star II and thinking it was the remains of DS I. Photos and clips of Luke's new black attire were fodder for speculation for months. Like Bingowings, I also remember a lot of discussion about the shot of Luke and Vader in the elevator. We were actually wondering if there was a chance that Luke turned to the dark side (gasp!)

I still get chills when I watch the first few minutes of ROTJ, before any of the main characters appear; I feel like I'm right back in that theater seat in 1983, not knowing what was going to happen. As the film progressed, I was actually worried that Luke might die!

I saw ROTJ 3 or 4 times that summer.

Mark Hamill to star in 2-hour Criminal Minds (CBS) finale!
Time

I think this is kind of a big deal, as aside from the occasional sit-com cameo, we haven't really seen MH in a prime time show, in a major role. I'm hoping he'll be playing the baddie, but the details of his character are being kept a secret:

I think the timing of this is also interesting, with all the rumors of his being cast in the next Star Wars sequels.

How many times have you bought the movies?
Time

I'm sure I've answered this before in another thread so I have no idea why I'm doing this:

SW VHS (orig. CBS/Fox release in drawer-type box) around 1984-ish (gift from Mom)
ESB VHS (orig. CBS/Fox release) around 1985-ish (gift from Mom)
ROTJ VHS (orig. CBS/Fox release) around 1986-ish (bought used for $30 at mall video store)

"FACES" Trilogy VHS boxed set P&S 1995
"FACES" Trilogy VHS boxed set letterbox 1995
"Hologram" VHS letterbox set 1995

"FACES" LD Trilogy (set one) titles purchased individually from Columbia House - 1997
"FACES" LD Trilogy (set 2-backup set) titles purchased individually from Columbia House - 1997
Special Edition LD trilogy boxed set (bought new from Columbia House) 1999-ish

Definitive Collection Trilogy LD set (bought used from eBay)
SW - 8mm color/sound reel (bought used from eBay)

DVD 4-disc Trilogy SE set 2004
DVD 6-disc Trilogy SE/OOT set in Best Buy Tin 2006
DVD 6-disc Trilogy SE/OOT backup set (titles purchased individually from Amazon) 2006

I've sold everything except the hologram VHS set, the 8mm, all the LDs and the DVDs (and I still have the original SW CBS/Fox VHS box, but the tape isn't original). I've never bought any of the Prequels on video, but my Aunt gave me TPM on letterboxed VHS in a deluxe box with a film cel, but I returned it to Best Buy unopened.

@poita: Actually that's pretty much how the scene should look. Like I said before I've been through these settings about 30 times or maybe even more, back when I did the color correction and in the end I've gotten very sure I got the best result I possibly could.

Even though it looks green at first glance, it's actually how it should look when all colors are brought back the way we did. Considering the downsides of the GOUT of course.

Just check the scan of that scene on jedi1: <a href="http://www.jedi1.net/images/1600/ANH-Galactic_Empire-02144-1600.jpg"></a><a href="http://www.jedi1.net/images/1600/ANH-Galactic_Empire-02144-1600.jpg" target="_blank" title="www.jedi1.net/images/1600/ANH-Galactic_Empire-02144-1600.jpg">http://www.jedi1.net/images/1600/ANH-Galactic_Empire-02144-1600.jpg</a>

Even Vader has a green tone there.

I appreciate that everybody is trying to help but it's way too late for that, and I'm very confident that the color correction got the best possible result so I'm not even considering going back to that point again. I hope everybody understands this.

I didn't realise it wasn't a scene by scene process, and I fully understand you not wanting to revisit the colour any more after putting so much work in and getting a far better result than the original GOUT. I think it looks fantastic in comparison.

I have no doubt that the scans are a bit green tinged either, it is a common problem with scanners and with aging film and film duplication.

There appears to be some fluorescent lighting in that scene, which could account for the green tone.

I can't speak to the accuracy of the scans, but those ANH films cels that were sold by Willitts are pretty stable color-wise, as are the Willitts ESB cels. The Willitts ROTJ cels are turning pink, however. They're on a different film stock.
