Another Form Of Protest?
Time
Let's be honest here- do you really think that's realistic? You're going to get thousands of people to buy the DVDS- not open them- and then return them? I'm sorry, but that just isn't going to happen. Thousands of people ARE going to buy these discs, because they want to watch them- including me. These DVDs are going to sell very well- especially because they're limited editions. It will be a lot easier to organise a SE sendback for the people who are going to buy the discs anyway, than to get people to buy them and return them -unopened- to the stores.

Well, I'm still planning on buying them. As discouraging as all of this is, we can't let GL win. I'm going to buy the DVDs, and send the SE discs back to lucasfilm with a note explaining why. I'm going to tell him that I'd rather watch crappy non-anamorphic DVDs of the OOT (or even p&s vhs copies) than blu-ray dics of the SE.

So, maybe I'll be the only one- but I don't care, I'm doing it anyway. It would be better if we all did it, though. "Hanging onto" your bootlegs isn't going to do any good. We need to make a statement here- thousands of unwanted SE discs pouring into the LFL offices!

You can write F**K YOU, GEORGE! on your DVDs with a sharpie if you like.

Who's with me?!

BTW, I've just re-sent all of my protest emails to Jim Ward, John Singh and Lynne Hale, and I'm going to forward them to Roger Ebert (who may still be in the hospital) and Leonard Maltin as well.

That's interesting...I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

*ahem* Did they pass this button out there? "Bonus Feature", eh?

Lucas: I can make just as much money with less effort
Time
I think the interview was conducted between TPM and AOTC, based on the discussion.

I love this part:

KURTZ: .....I just don't like changing whatever a film is like when it's finished – good, bad, or indifferent, that's the way it was it released and the way the audience perceives it. To keep fiddling with it, long after the fact... Jean Renoir said in a documentary interview that we did with him when we were all film students, that something that he learned from his father was that, for an artist, the most important thing is to know when you're done, and leave it. Of course for a painter, it's absolutely crucial, because you put too much extra paint on and you've ruined the painting. With a filmmaker, you have a certain amount of recourse and you can change it again, but the principle is still the same – to know when you're done, and when it's over, and when it's finished – and you walk away. It's critical, because you can be like Kubrick, and you can work on it forever, and it's still not going to get any better.

IGNFF: At least one can say Kubrick didn't go back 25 years later and add a scene to Dr. Strangelove.

KURTZ: No, he didn't; or 2001, or any of those early films. He at least accepted that they were finished, and that was it.

IGNFF: And wouldn't allow others to tinker with them, either.

KURTZ: No.

Yes, I noticed that too. The matte lines are still there. What goes through Lucas's mind, I have to wonder?

LOL! That's a riot- I noticed the Rancor matte lines as well. The funniest thing is that the Rancor scene from the OOT was used as an example in the MTV special as to what scenes needed cleaning up and updating. I remember noticing the matte lines in the SE and thinking- WTF?? (which is amazing considering that I was still reeling from the horror that is 'jedi rocks'!)

You can STILL see through the cockpit in ESB? I thought they fixed that. They made such a big deal out of it.

That's a very interesting site, BTW. I've only seen one other site that shows the subtle "censoring" of the laser blast impacts on their intended victims. I have to say I prefer the Jabba from the 1997 SE, to the one on the 2004 DVD- he looks horrible! (IMO) I also prefer the colors of the binary sunset from the OOT than from the '97 or '04 versions.

There will never again be a "definitive" version of these films as long as GL is alive. As computer effects improve, the films will be updated every 5 or 10 years. Enough is enough already.

Apart from the idiotic censorships of Tom and Jerry, there is also the situation of the producers of shows like Northern Exposure and Quantum Leap whod don't want to buy the original music. We'll probably never see proper release of those. The recent Justice League season 2 set was released in widescreen after a massive letter writing campaign, but not anamorphic. After complaints, future sets will be 16:9. Why can't I just watch things the way the they were originally presented in high quality on DVD? Is that too much to ask?

I loved Northern Exposure- what did they do to those DVDs???

Didn't GL also alter the opening shot of American Graffitti? Was the original version ever released on DVD?

They compeletely altered most of the original music for many of the episodes because the producer did not want to pay for the rights, so generic music was used instead. No, the original version of AG was never released on DVD and probably never will be.

That sucks about NE - that show used great music! I remember the one where they used the Lindsey Buckingham track ("D.W. Suite" - I think it was called)

Sucks about AG too!

Info Wanted: Has anyone done a Super 8 preservation of Star Wars?

So i've tracked down some good condition Super 8 reels (two of Star Wars and two of Empire) and I'm currently in discussions with some companies now to get quotes on a decent transfer.

I have two reels of each movie, but they're all labelled pretty similar. Ken Films, Selected scenes, 17 minutes, Colour Sound, Super 8. The Star Wars have the codes F-64 and F48 on them, ESB F-63 and F-64. Dows anyone know if they contain the smae footage?

I know that there were 2 different Ken Films Super-8 versions of ESB, each having different scenes (talking about the long versions- not the short). I think there were also 2 different versions of Star Wars.

The red could have been a little less brown, and I'm not really sure how he hides those boots under his Clark Kent clothes, but then again how would he hide the cape too? It's a movie!! Besides, during a Daily Planet meeting, Perry White even says 'is that a new suit?' and tells his Fashion editor to get on the story, which I thought was a nice touch. At least in this film we actually see Clark remove his clothes to reveal the suit ubderneath, instead of just 'fading' into it like in the old movies.

I thought Superman looked pretty damn cool in this film.

There were a few shots in the original Chris Reeve films that show him removing his clothes, revealing his costume underneath.

The new costume does look like the 'bad' Superman costume from Superman III, though!

They didn't change the Spiderman costume, did they?

I noticed in the new "Spidey 3" trailer that they're using that black and white costume (for Spidey's "alter") that they came up with about 20 years ago when they tried to change Spidey's "look" for the comic book. It didn't last very long. LOL.

After reading that, I am cautiously optimistic that a better version may follow, but I am still discouraged by the fact that LFL is using the "ONE LAST TIME" ploy.

I guess this time it can be called "ONE LAST TIME...NO, REALLY! I MEAN IT THIS TIME!!"

Originally posted by: bgx90 I just think that while they were doing all of this editing of the LD masters, they should have removed the most glaring artifact: the letterboxes and made the picture anamorphic..
But that would require a new transfer. Apparently, they're not willing to do that this time around.
