Any progress?

Yes!

Watching the second half of the film today. But it should be 100% complete, I think.

I did end up using Catbus’s great new subtitles based on the 35mm (newer and better version than in this thread). I’ve also cleaned up and color corrected TN1’s “A Long Time Ago” card for the intro, for those who are unaware. The final MKV should be done and muxed in the next few days. And then anyone here who wants that can have it. Once a number of people have reported that all is okay it can go on spleen.

It will be version 2.7 and final as far as my involvement with Despecialized editing goes.

Ok, great news! Looking forward to see the final result!

I would like to have people who have been following the thread give it a check for some final feedback. The previous (2.5, still) release had a good amount of error checking on the final render from other eyes, which 2.6 could have probably used more of. So, I want to make sure it’s right this time because I don’t want to do it again! 😃

I wouldn’t mind having a look!

This may or may not have been brought up when 2.0 was in the making; During the trench runs, like 01:50:56 and onwards, there are some green patches on the walls. Was this caused by technicolor? Don’t have access to any other reference at the moment.

Not sure but it’s definitely beyond my ability to change it. I actually did a version with greyer trenches made from the BD, but it clashed with the cockpit shots and despecialized ones, and those ones I couldnt change. So, definitely leaving it alone.

Ok, will keep looking for other anomlaties!

I could do some comparison images again. Maybe compared to 2.6 this time. They’re very minor and mostly based on Darth Lucas’s observations. Although many of the shots are ones he also changed, the changes are much smaller in every case.

Pod bay scene was made less blue.

Mos Eisley tweaks were minor. I took the magenta shift out of that first 35mm entrance shot. But then it seemed way too cold, so I put most of it back. 😃 The closeup of Obiwan during the Identification speech had a little red removed, but I don’t agree that the whole scene is too magenta. Used the 2.5 shot discussed earlier today.

Turned down the blue very slightly in several scenes:
When the troops scramble just after the falcon lands at the Death Star, and during Vader’s “I want every part of this ship checked” speech. Han’s ‘boring conversation anyway’ shot. Before and after Han runs into the despecialized hallway of stormtroopers. One shot early in Luke/Leia’s bridge scene that was very blue, even for the already blue scene. Tarkin on his intercom before the diamond wipe to the Yavin briefing. The battle of Yavin is the same except for the two scenes with Vader on foot in the Death Star and two shots of stormtroopers blowing up. Blue was turned down on those as well. All of these shots still have blue sets and none of it would have been noteworthy enough for a release if it wasn’t for the other issues.

Ok, cool! Colors looked really good in the last release but I guess there’s always
room for improvement 😉 Thanks for taking the time to keep working on the little details.
Will keep an eye out for other oddities but apart from that frozen TIE fighter everything
just looks pretty damn good!

Awaiting the updated version then 😉

Btw I noticed something while watching 2.6. At 01:50:26 just when it cuts from the shot of the TIE-fighter to the X-wing, it looks like the motion of the TIE is frozen just before the cut. Tried to go frame-by-frame in MPC but no frame seems to be repeated (not sure if mpc advances 1 frame at a time though?) Am I imagining this here?

This is bizarre.

Yes, the same thing happens in VLC. And no, there are no frames missing or repeating. Interestingly, the ANH MKV has the glitch occur between the previous two shots (Vader firing and the tie fighter) but the tie to the x-wing shots are smooth.

Not really sure what’s going on here. A bitrate jump that is not favorable? There are no errors there in the BD format release, which was encoded from the same master with different bitrate settings.

Bizarre indeed! Just read that the new version will be encoded from the lossless source-files and I assume that will eliminate error 😃 Lucky thing I haven’t burned 2.6 to a disc yet!

Any sneak previews of those new tweaks mentioned? 😉 Or just any info on planned tweaks? (Apart from the
pod shot mentioned above that is.)

You should be able to mux the lossless audio from Harmy’s into this. That’s what I intend to do.

Yeah I could do that but wouldn’t the lossless tracks muxed to the BD video-stream result in a mkv to big to fit on a bd25?

Maybe. If you don’t want them all you may be able to squeeze just one or two on there or maybe all of them. I only muxed in the stereo track (I’m not set up for 5.1 currently) and I was under 25 GB. But I don’t bother burning things anyway, I’ve gone full file/streaming.

I’d like to have the 3 theatrical tracks + 1985 mix, so it might become a little cramped.
I’m always running out of space so I want to put in on a disc.

Edit: It’s tempting, mostly to sharpen up the boundary between Luke and the background, but I think I’m going to pass on this one. Great suggestion, though.

Yeah sure, well thanks for considering 😃

And congrats on the release of 2.6! I am eager to check out your work, but I think I’ll hold out for the MKV for the sake of the lossless audio though 😉

Well, I’ve broken the composite rule a few times now. I guess it depends on the main focus of the shot or how badly the GOUT impacts the shot.

That one I can’t do anything about due to the wipes before and after and how very severely the flanking shots are degraded by switching to SSE.

Ok, gotcha! Those pesky wipes always causing trouble! ;P

Oh, at night. Of course. Hmm. I have already rendered it. Again. But maybe I’ll take a look at it. Forgot about that one.

Wish I’d come to think of it sooner 😕 Harmys scene totaly works if it stays though, but gout will be gout… 😉

Yeah. So, on that note lets all try to think if we’re forgetting anything. 😃

And the film even as is will still have plenty of GOUT-using shots. It’s not like we’re going from RoTJ 2.0 to 2.5 and cleaning up the last bits. That’s absolutely out of the scope intended here.

Yeah sure, saw your comment that Harmys composite-shots would remain untouched 😃
As for pure gout shots, how about this one? (In case you go back in, that is 😉 ) https://plus.google.com/photos/+HarmyDespecialized/albums/5932164278535972945/5932164730720724962?pid=5932164730720724962&oid=109609428403596349302

Can’t recall how badly it was affected by the DVNR in motion, don’t have access to De-ED at the moment.

Btw, did you manage to keep all the english audio mixes for the final encode?

One thing I haven’t brought up until now is that the first 3 tracks, that were DTS-HD, are going to be the Dolby Digital versions from Harmy’s AVCHD release. Again, an MKV version for anyone who finds this to be a dealbreaker.

Cool, an MKV with lossless audio would be the droids I’m looking for 😉

Not sure whether you’ve started your encoding yet or not, but just wanted to ask; The night shot of Luke and
C3PO outside the homestead, could it benefit from a 35mm transplant? Havn’t seen SSE yet so I actually have no clue how that scene fares. IIRC Harmy rotoscoped Lukes’ face from the BD into gout footage.

This looks very promising! I thorougly enjoyed DE-ed 2.5, but sometimes felt that there as a bit to much green and some faces looked spray-tanned. More balanced colors and more 35mm footage, I will definitely check this one out when the opportunity is given! Seeing the screen shots also makes me look forward to 3.0 😃

Harmy has had permission from the studios to do this since day one.

Why sure! I verified this before downloading and Harmy told me that he met George Lucas and some Fox executives in a desert (and Jim Morrison was there too) and they told him to make the Despecialized Editions. Especially George was very happy since he wanted to release the originals himself but had unfortunately lost the negatives!

Such a shame indeed about the TN1 disbanding. I’ve watched that Tech sample 20 times and it still amazes me!
