Hayden Christensen wins Razzie for ROTS
Time
"But these guys get paid to act and they get hired because they do it well"

But what if Lucas tells them to act a particular way? I don't recall specifics, but I recall there were many times, especially in AOTC, where Lucas kept toning down Hayden's "anger", like when he was talking to Padme about killing the sand people.

"Remember, the actors aren't present during post and may not even see their perfomance at the trails or the premier."

Case in point: Hayden's "ghost" at the end of ROTJ. This was copy/pasted from another scene altogether, which explains why Anakin's facial expressions and eye line don't jive with the scene as is. Hayden didn't even know he was in ROTJ until he saw it on DVD. This is entirely Lucas' fault - Hayden had no direction in this at all, but certainly wasn't an "empty vessel".

I also recall Anthony Daniels lamenting that his last filmed scene for ROTS was done, like many, many other shots, in bluescreen limbo. Most actors will tell you that bluescreen acting is difficult, and in the TPM and ROTS documentaries, there are at least two scenes where Lucas cut/pastes different scenes together to make completely new scenes that bear little relation to what they originally were (C3PO and R2 in the Tatooine garage, and Mace walking over to Yoda outside of the Galatic Council chambers.) In these and many other cases, the performances of the actors are taken completely out of their original context. The actors could be following their directions to a T, and be giving the performance of their life, but if the scene is later drastically altered to create a new, unintended scene, then the performances suffer at the whim of the director.

Of course, many times, Lucas would do one, maybe two quick takes, and then proceed to the next scene, hoping to many any necessary fixes in post. That doesn't leave much margin for error.

BLADE RUNNER: The Unauthorized OFF-WORLD Box Set (Released)

"i really dont think you can take a 29.97fps and just encode to 23.976fps progressive without IVTC first, but i could be wrong, but i think that is why it is jumpy."

Agreed. IVTC combines frames, so you end up with fewer frames. If you take a 29fps video and simply play it back at 24fps, you are just playing it slower. I've never tried to IVTC an MPEG, but I don't think it would be a very pretty sight.

ADigitalMan's Guide to MPEG2/AC3 Editing
Time
"Wow, editing 5.1 audio is crazy complicated with Sony Vegas. It's tempting to do straight cuts and hope it doesn't sound to bad"

What's so difficult about it? You have five tracks laid out, and edit accordingly - in fact, you can group them all together so that fades are done on all tracks simultaneously (and it's easy to ungroup a particular track for a particular fade, and then regroup.) In fact, it's not a bad idea to edit with the 2.0 track first (to figure out how the video will go), and then go back and align the 5.1 soundtrack to the 2.0. You can line them up visually by looking at the waveforms.

That's not what we are saying at all. If you've seen anything else that Hayden has been in, and compare that performance to AOTC and ROTS, there's a BIG difference. The fact that this can be said about any of the big actors in the PT says LOADS about the direction - not to mention what is known about Lucas' infamous (fabuloso?) directing method of "Faster, more intense" method.

Everyone (except for Jar-Jar) acts like they are in a bottle. The only ones who are still able to provide any depth to their characters despite this are McDiarmid and Neeson.

SUSPIRIA with original sountrack in PCM! Duel Layer (Released)
Time
Boomstick, just PM Matt. (Click on the padlock icon over his post.)

"So we combined the two using Final Cut Pro. It was a BITCH because there were numerous cases of a frame or two missing from the beginning of shots on the DVD. That meant lots of resyncing. Oh well. Them's the breaks."

Was this difficult? In Vegas, I can load both soundtracks, and visually line them up using the waveforms (and then listen to check for sync.) When I was comparing the Def. Col. and Faces soundtracks, I played them simultaneously through my headphones, one in the left channel and one in the right.

What do you drive?
Time
"Behold, the Falcon..."

I can't believe all you guys missed the obvious retort:

"What a piece of junk!"

(And you called yourselves Star Wars fans. )

"I DROVE THAT THING THE REST OF THE WAY TO WORK FLAMES AND ALL. I WATCHED IT BURN THE REST OF THE WAY DOWN IN THE PARKING LOT."

My friend and I were driving my dad's station wagon up a mountain road at night, when the engine caught on fire. We pulled over and had nothing but dirt and pepsi to throw on the fire. After it was out, we started it up again, and flames promptly reignited.

We ended up having to drive the car back down the mountain road. Since there was no power, there was also no power steering or power brakes. I was literally standing on the brakes, both to keep the speed down and to give me enough leverage to turn the steering wheel.

"Too true. I remember back before the 04 Presidential election, a lot of Kerry-supporters were complaining about jobs being shipped overseas (you know, as part of the arguement that Bush 43 lost the most jobs of any president since Herbert Hoover)."

I recall there being a bid for tractors for a government job. It was John Deere versus a Japanese brand. The Japanese brand was cheaper and won the bid. There was a huge uproar, but it was later pointed out that the Japanese brand was made in America, whereas the John Deere was made in Japan. Go figure.

We have a 22ft Ford motorhome, a Dodge Caravan, and a Mazda Protege hatchback. We've also had two saturns (at different times.)

AC-3 vs. MPEG audio?
Time
"Or does Dolby licensing set the price pretty high?"

That's a lot of it. The AC3 plug-in doesn't work out of the box - you have to register the plug-in online first, so that's not included in the overall price. Same with the MainConcept MPEG-2 encoder.

"Does Vegas do a lot of tricks, like doing the proper phasing when you spread your additions across channels?"

Good question. I'm not sure. I'll get back to you on that one.

"6-channel PCM? Do players do 6-channel PCM? I'm out of my depth, here..."

Not to my knowledge, but considering how much space such a soundtrack would take up - WOOF! In fact, if I remember correctly, when I made a 6-channel PCM soundtrack, my computer wouldn't play it (it was an intermediate step in turning a 2-ch PCM track to a 5.1 soundtrack.)

Frustrated with DVD burning
Time
"Hmmm... maybe heat could change the reflectivity of the dye, or something."

Now that makes sense, though I would hope it would take a tremendous amount of heat, seeing as how the dye is supposed to be "fluid" only under the direct beam of a laser. Otherwise, pit size would be all over the place.

"Note to self: Start watching Mythbusters."

Oh, it is one of MANY awesome episodes. They attach CDs to a router and try various speeds - faster and faster. Slow-motion photograpy shows the disc warping as it spins. Finally, they max out the router, and the discs shatter as soon as they throw the switch. GREAT STUFF!

Episode 2: Cell Phone Destruction, Silicone Breasts, CD-ROM Shattering
"In this episode, Jamie and Adam test several explosive theories. Can chatting on a cell phone while pumping gas cause the pump to blow up? Our mythbusters put themselves at risk so you don't have to. They also put silicone breast implants to the test at high altitude. Will they burst under pressure? Finally, we'll learn once and for all if high-speed CD-ROM players can really shatter a compact disc."
