.: The XØ Project - Laserdisc on Steroids :. (SEE FIRST POST FOR UPDATES) (* unfinished project *)
Time

For what it's worth. I am still willing to finish the X0 Project.

However, I've not heard anything from Zion on our private board since July 13th, and his last post here was August 6, 2008. Frankly, I'm a little concerned about him (as well as for myself, since he has one of my Def Col LDs!)

I'd make an offhand remark about how folks on this project tend to disappear, but I don't want to jinx myself...

Can't import MPG with Vegas?
Time

Well, it didn't work: I tried to re-encode the M2V file to an AVI with VirtualDub, but 3 hours and 100 GB later, the picture of the new AVI is all jerky and squished....What is going on?

What happens when you play the AVI by itself? Is it squished in Media Player as well as in Vegas?

Which way is it squished? It could simply be that you made a non-anamorphic video from an anamorphic DVD.

If you can get the AVI into Vegas, you can adjust the height and width until the video has the appropriate ratio.

Info Wanted: Two Questions
Time

I think that was on the shrink wrap on the outside, so it wouldn't be on the physical sleeve itself.

Correct. When I bought this LD on Half.com, it still had the original shrinkwrap, so I kept it like that and bought another one for playback purposes.

I don't remember that sticker on my VHS set either, but I definitely remember all the advertising - including television commercials - hyping it as "one last time" to get the original Star Wars etc.

I don't think the VHS set had it (either the THX or Faces set), but yes, there were many TV ads spouting that line at the time.

doesn't disney pull the exact same stunts but worse..

Well, they talk about movies going "back in the vault" for an unknown amount of time. The Platinum DVDs were supposed to be one release each year (right after my daughter's birthday, which is good timing), but I think they've been adding more Platinums (as well as swelling the ranks of the Golds and Silvers), especially since Eisner left.

Of course, now there's Blu-Ray, so expect to see more films coming out. I have it on good authority that Bug's Life is being redone for HD.

For instance, the scene where R2 gets zapped in the canyon was originally fairly brightly exposed, but on the THX it is dim, much darker than any telecine prior, as if it is much later in the day

It is definitely different from the same Japanese release, but I prefer it overall to the Def. Col. series.

The Atheism thread
Time
Not only that, but doing it every morning in school, before every council meeting....etc, etc. It makes it little more than a procedure that everyone is supposed to follow, rather than something meaningful.

I mean, how short-lived is our allegience, if we have to do it every fucking morning? It's just becoming a litmus test.

Info Wanted: 5.1 mono-style mix?
Time
It's possible in Vegas, which can create 5.1 soundtracks. My receiver does not have a Prologic II, so I took the stereo soundtrack, ran it through a software Prologic emulator and create 5 audio streams (C, L, R, BL, BR). I dropped these into Vegas with the original video/audio, synced them up, and created a 5.1 soundtrack. I received quite a few compliments on it.

I don't think this would work with the straight mono soundtrack (which wouldn't have the PL steering instructions), so each channel would have to be recreated (or layed over the earlier PL soundtrack). It would probably take awhile, and probably not worth in the effort, IMHO (Too much chance of becoming a mish-mash.)

As for what Cameron will look like, she has been scratched up a bit before, and her wounds seemed to heal. Maybe she has a special type of skin that can regenerate itself. I am sure they wont want to change the way she looks, I doubt she will take much damage at all.

Well, it is living flesh, so it can have basic "healing abilities", which could certainly be enhanced.

Secondly, I'm sure she's built out of the same futuristic materials that allowed Star Trek Voyager to suffer tremendous damage and still be repaired in time for the next episode without any kind of drydock or repair station.

How many pixels to crop in order to fill a 16:9 screen?

With all due respect, you're going about this situation the wrong way. Make the video with womble as best you can, and use that in comparison with the original video to show your grandpa why the video has black bars, and how much video (and detail) he would be missing out on if it were zoomed in.

I would hope that, at that point, he'd understand why the black bars are a necessary evil, and between them and Pan&Scan, the lesser of two evils.

If that didn't work, then I woulnd't waste too much time making such fine adjustments for a preferred P&S version, but that's just my opinion.
