1977 70mm soundtrack recording (Released)

"I'm just sceptical about your "piece of cake" claim."

"Still not an easy task."

"Phase-accurate syncing from independently vari-speeded sources is extremely difficult and mind-numbingly time consuming."

Fair enough, but just give me the files, and I'll show ya. I'm aware it's hard work, but I know how to do it, and I'm offering to do it. If all you guys are going to do is complain about how hard it is, then let's just drop it altogether. I, personally, like to try and actually do something before giving the defeatist attitude.

Hell, if I'd followed Dr. Gonzo's advice and stopped trying to make my own SW LD DVDs because his were "good enough", then the X0 Project might never have come into existence.

That WOULD be cool, actually.

"I'll have a go re-recording the separate L and R of a portion of the tape to test how much bother it is to keep in sync in a WAV editor for 20 mins or so. But not this week. "

I'll save you thr trouble. I've done this with a 2-hour music concert, though it was syncing audio to video (which was actually tougher for a variety of reasons, including losing sync every 5 to 10 minutes). Left-to-right would be a piece of cake for me.

I actaully PREFER seeing the black bars, even on my widescreen TV.

"But without an anamorphic transfer, trying to watch it on a widescreen monitor is going to distort the picture terribly. It'll be like watching it through a carnival mirror. That's the issue.

???"

Methinks he's referring to the "stretch-mode" that many TVs have to make a 4x3 picture fit a 16x9 screen. There are many ways to do this, each with their own limitations.

Info Wanted: Faces vs. 1993 Definitive Collection - why the '93 DC LDs?
Time
While CLV can potentially create a different visual, it's very minor, and newer players with frame-memory don't suffer this problem.

Personally, I like the Faces version, for its contrast and color. The "Definitive Versions" are rife with their own problems as well, a tradition that LFL/THX have been continuing with the recent DVD releases.

"Why was it closed?"

According to G-FETT, it was closed because a thread like that was unsustainable.

And you know what - he's partly correct. What the thread couldn't sustain was the sheer number of posts it received ! So much so that it had to be restarted four times!. Even more, if you count the old Snowboards version.

I won't even get into the number of views it had compared to others...

Lucasfilm to sell Physical Effects Unit

"but they certainly aren't the be-all-end-all of effects these days."

Isn't *that* the truth!

"I'm a traditionally trained animator, and I've already seen my industry crumble at the feet of CGI."

Which is a shame, because films like Nightmare before Christman are fantastic. James and the Giant Peach wasn't CGI, was it? (I've never watched the entire thing! )

"It's just like Disney closing down its traditional animation department."

When did this happen?

"Better explain for those confused! Lasseter is now the head of Disney's animation department due to his success with Pixar, and it is Lasseter who really wants the traditional animation department resurrected."

Thank God Pixar is there! I refuse to buy any cheap Disney sequel except for Toy Story 2.

"ILM dug up old VistaVision cameras to shot the effects, they hand-built optical printers, and they invented computerized motion control. They were so far ahead of everyone else back in the eighties..."

I recall a snippet in the book that came with the Def. Col. LDs where they talked about a specialized camera with very small gearing (I forget what it was used for, but it was very important.) Anyways, even back then, you couldn't find these cameras anymore, and it was used for many years before someone forgot to oil the gears and they ate themselves. *THIS* is what ILM was all about. Now that's gone as well.

"Episode III? No. I fast forward though every scene Grevous is in. Plus any scene where Mace is in too. Basically half the movie. I can't stand it. Episode I, I could at least swallow. This movie? No. It just got worse and worse as Lucas went along. "

ROTS is a pretty descent film, from the point Grevious dies to the point where Obi-wan and Anakin start lava-surfing on the droids.
