It's also on DVD, beee-yatch!!!!
"and I'm sorry you saw half a completed film and fell in love with it."
...but I jut couldn't help myself from re-releasing this "half-completed film" over and over and over and over for the next 25 years.
"Seriously folks. Lucas doesn't owe any of us......."
//SNIP
I never said he did. I just think that pretending the original version no longer exists is stupid, especially considering how many times he's sold it. It doesn't matter now, though. He's got his DVDs, and we've got ours.
"if it's so important to them, take matters into the own hands."

Technically, it levels out the range of volume, so that loud noises aern't as loud as the dialogue. This means you can turn it up to hear the actors, with having to race and turn down the volume when something blows up. However, DVDs have to be encoded to use this feature. That's interestring about TPM. I'll have to see what it does on mine. Is your friend listening to it in 5.1 or stereo mode?

Oops, no. Sorry. You'd either need the master tapes for that (good luck!) or a copy of the movie soundtracks and/or something like "The Story of Star Wars" for dialogue.
Believe me, I've tried to isolate dialogue/effects for various reasons, and it always sounds like crap.
That being said, most dialogue in a 5.1 mix comes from the center channel, but I would imagine you are trying to avoid some of that very same dialgue from the official DVDs, right?

"He was the one who created the Anamorphic set that there are torrents of."
I made an anamorphic version once, but the master was poor to begin with. Eventually, I'll make an anamorphic version of this set. Like Rik said, it looks great zoomed in, so there won't be too much loss of detail.
"I offered him the missing ESB footage if he wanted to redo ESB"
My Faces set isn't missing the footage.

"So will you go guys be using the retail DVD menus in future productions?"
Well, first that assumes I will ever get the DVDs - which won't happen unless I use Netflix or someone buys them for me.
Secondly, no.

On any given page, pushing down to the commentary link takes you to the appropriate page (with a few exceptions.)

BTW, Rik...did you like the Fox/Lucasfilm intro. I've always indentified those with the Star Wars films, and just had to include them. It really gets my heart pumping every time.

Well, like I said, my Def. Col. set isn't a good copy, so there wasn't much choice. Nonetheless, the Faces set is an excellent transfer as well. In fact, I ran across this recently...
Definitive Collection: One drawback to this CAV set is that the first film suffers from too much noise reduction (for an example of this see Luke's lightsaber during his training with the remote onboard the Millennium Falcon). This problem was fixed with the subsequent CLV release
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Faces Set: Uses the same letterbox transfer as the "Definitive Collection" CAV box set, only with the noise reduction greatly reduced. Presented on two CLV discs (with a gatefold jacket) - Davis DVD versions list

So, it would appear that there are two strikes against my Def. Col. set.
Actually, there was a third strike as well - the commentary track had sudden audio drop-outs and sudden volume changes. Luckily, Sony Vegas was able to level these out for me, and it sounds almost natural again. BTW, when the commentary is done, you can just chapter skip to the end and go back to the menu.

"(good job on the the VBR and color correction is perfect!)"
Good job, indeed. That disc is 99.9% full.

Well, in the end, I took the advice and dropped the brightness to -5 below the original transfer (before I had it at +10/+15). This brought two advantages: better overall detail (i.e. this is why the zoom looks so good), and almost no visible matte boxes in the space scenes.I realized what a good decision it was when I finally noticed that Leia's "white" outfit is actually cream-colored next to the stormtroopers on the Tantive. I look for those kinds of subtleties.
"(it's a little quite but most DD 5.1 is)"
Lol, I know. You've no idea how much I had to crank up the volume on that track, and it's still noticeably quieter.
Anyways, I'm glad you liked it. It means a lot, coming from someone who has seen so many different versions. I had nothing to compare it to other than the original LD's.

so the only hope we have now is copying the DVDs in September and editting the new scenes with the old ones..."
And you'll quickly find out how pointless it is to "seamlessly" combine admittedly inferior LD footage with the DVD footage (which will most likely have to be recompressed)
Not to mention the fact that you will be combining anamorphic and non-anamorphic video...
"I think that as long as the transitions aren't so jarring"
Unfortunateely, most of the transitions are wipes or dissolves. Good luck syncing those up.

I've gotten fantastic results with a $40 WinTVGO model 190 capture board. It's gotten great reviews all over the net. That being said, it works best with third-party software.
"capture the movies from the Definitive Collection LD source, through component video inputs (RGB cables... you know the ones)"
Unless your LD player has component video (and few do), it's not going to happen. LD is composite video anyways, so it won't make that much difference, unless you have high-end pro hardware like laserman.
"Anyone know if this is gonna happen and I can save myself a few hundred bucks?"
Oh, it's coming all right, and if you think a good capture is only going to cost "a few hundred", then you'd best wait until the DL's are here.

Actually, I was entirely correct. I simply didn't go into the actual encoding process.

Exactly, which is why PL-II was created.

Feature an uncompressed PCM copy of the Dolby Prologic II soundtrack from the original Laser Discs. This is the clearest, crispest, nicest sound. No shoddy home-made 5.1 remix or fake DTS. Prologic II is 4-channel surround sound encoded into stereo tracks – so if you have a surround sound decoder and it’s compatible with Prologic II (it would have to be very old not to be, like more than 10 years old) then you will be able to enjoy the surround sound.
The PCM soundtrack on the LD's is not Pro-Logic II encoded! It can be Pro-Logic II decoded with the right equipment. Pro-Logic II was designed to create "5.1" sound from stereo sources, and didn't even exist until a few years ago, well after the last LD was ever pressed.
"The LaserDiscs are not anamorphic, so to make their picture anamorphic you have to add an extra line of resolution every 4 lines, which means interpolation."
That's crap as well. All you have to do is zoom in on the picture in your editing program, much like one would do with a DVD player or a digital TV. No extra lines are being created at all!
If you are going to brag about your DVD's or complain about others, at least educate yourself on the technical aspects before doing so.
